(Zhang Zhongjing stated in the *Shanghan Lun* (Treatise on Cold Damage): "When a rapid pulse (Shu Mai, 数脉) appears at the Guan position, without head or tail above and below, resembling the size of a bean and trembling, it is named Dong Mai (Moving Pulse, 动脉). I observe that among the two 'shang' (upper) characters in the original text, one was erroneously added by later editors. It should read 'Shu Jue appears at the Guan and Xia positions.' The classics state: 'If the Hand Shaoyin pulse moves significantly in women, she is pregnant.' The Hand Shaoyin channel belongs to the Heart; thus, the Moving Pulse at the Cun position indicates this. It also states: 'Yin deficiency with Yang pounding is called Beng (Metrorrhagia/Metrostaxis).' This is due to Kidney Yin deficiency caused by Yang pounding; the appearance of Beng symptoms indicates a Moving Pulse at the Chi position. Wang Shuhe, in compiling the *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic), did not realize that one of the two 'shang' characters was a redundant character, and therefore stated that the Moving Pulse appears only at the Guan position. Consequently, those discussing pulses have all claimed that the Moving Pulse is found only at the Guan position, which contradicts the classics.)
The Moving Pulse resembles a bean, rapid and trembling. When Yang moves, sweating occurs; anxiety and pain are causes for concern. (Cheng Wuji said: "When Yin and Yang contend, the deficient side moves." Analyzing, if Yin pounds Yang, Yang becomes deficient; due to Yang deficiency, sweating occurs. The classics state that the Liver governs fright, and the Yangming channel also governs fright. The Gallbladder attaches to the Liver; strong Liver Qi results in a brave Gallbladder, while weak Liver Qi results in a timid Gallbladder. A timid person harbors fear, hence easily startled; this is fright generated from within. Yangming belongs to Earth, and Earth's nature is quiet; thus, hearing the sound of Wood causes sudden alarm; this is fright generated from without. From this perspective, spontaneous fright belongs to the Liver, while being startled by external objects belongs to Yangming. However, all fright ultimately returns to the Heart. When Yin and Yang contend, if Yin pathogen prevails, pain occurs.) When Yin moves, fever occurs; severe blood loss (Beng) is a heavy condition. (Yang pounding Yin leads to Yin deficiency; due to Yin deficiency, fever occurs. If Yang pathogen is excessive, it forces blood to move recklessly, causing Beng.)
The Chi pulse is slippery and rapid, and the Xin (Heart) pulse moves. If the floating and sinking qualities of the three positions (Cun, Guan, Chi) are equal, and the pulse beats fifty times without interruption, pregnancy is confirmed. If the pulse is rapid but disperses upon pressure, the fetus is approximately three months old; if the pulse is rapid but does not disperse, it can be estimated as five months. A deep pulse suggests a male fetus, while a floating pulse suggests a female fetus; inferring through Yin and Yang requires reference to the Three Powers (Heaven, Earth, Human). (Women take abundant blood as their foundation, so the Chi pulse should be slippery. Slippery pulse belongs to Blood, which is Yin; phlegm-dampness belongs to Qi, which is Yang. Slippery and rapid indicates the interaction of Yang and Yin. The Heart pulse in women should be deep; now, due to the contention of Yin and Yang, the pulse moves, indicating the interaction of Yin and Yang. With Yin and Yang interacting, the three pulse positions show no bias toward floating or sinking, beat regularly fifty times without Knotted (Jie) or Cursory (Cu) interruptions, clearly indicating pregnancy. At three months, the fetus's form is not yet solid, so the pulse feels near and disperses upon pressure. At five months, the form gradually solidifies, so the pulse does not disperse upon pressure, yet remains rapid. The Rapid pulse represents Yang Qi; all things generate through Heaven and Earth's Yang Qi, and Yin must receive the mother's Yang Qi to grow. Why does the Deep Yin pulse indicate a male, and the Floating Yang pulse indicate a female? Generally, a male fetus receives more Yang Qi, leaving the mother with insufficient Yang and excess Yin. Excess Yin and insufficient Yang result in a deep pulse. A female fetus receives more Yin Qi, leaving the mother with insufficient Yin and excess Yang. Excess Yang and insufficient Yin result in a floating pulse. This is similar to how, when bearing a boy, Yin exceeds Yang and Yin is exterior while Yang is interior; when bearing a girl, Yang exceeds Yin and Yang is exterior while Yin is interior. Why do Rapid and Slippery pulses not indicate disease? Because if it is Rapid but not Slippery, it indicates Yin deficiency with Fire hyperactivity; if it is Slippery with Phlegm, it is not a disease. Since the Chi pulse is both Slippery and Rapid, the Moving Pulse at the Cun position indicates the mother is not diseased. The method in the *Mai Jing* to distinguish gender: Left hand Deep and Solid indicates a boy; Right hand Floating and Large indicates a girl. Both hands Deep and Solid indicate twin boys; both hands Floating and Large indicate twin girls. Additionally, an enlarged Left Chi pulse indicates a boy, an enlarged Right Chi pulse indicates a girl, and both Chi pulses enlarged indicate twin sons.)
