Facial edema, pale-black complexion, tongue curled and cyanotic. Limbs weak, eyes blind as if sightless. Unceasing weeping indicates Liver Qi exhaustion; life will surely end within eight days.
Zhang Shixian stated: Cyanosis is the color of the Liver. A curled and cyanotic tongue signifies the "child" organ (Kidney) revealing the "mother" organ's (Liver) failing hue. Weakness in the limbs occurs because the sinews cannot maintain support. When the Liver fails to store blood to nourish the eyes, vision becomes blind. Fluids leak out, causing unceasing tears. All these conditions are caused by Liver Qi exhaustion. Metal controls Wood; therefore, death occurs on days when Metal Qi is prosperous. The eight-day period counts from the next day to Xin days. The Classics state: When the Foot Jueyin Qi exhausts, sinews contract, pulling the testicles and curling the tongue. Jueyin refers to the Liver Meridian. The Liver is the convergence of sinews. Sinews gather at the genitalia and connect to the root of the tongue. Thus, when meridians fail to nourish, sinews contract and tighten. Tightened sinews pull the testicles and tongue. Tongue curling and testicular retraction indicate that sinews die first; condition worsens on Geng days, and death occurs on Xin days.
According to the *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic): If a patient's Liver Qi exhausts, they die after eight days. How is this known? The face is blue-green, the patient desires to lie prone, eyes look but do not see people, and sweat flows incessantly like water.
Complexion dark and sallow, shoulder breathing, fixed staring gaze, accompanied by swollen palms without creases. Delirious speech, body feeling hot and stifling; death occurs within one day.
Zhang Shixian stated: "Li huang" refers to blackness. Swollen palms without creases indicate Heart Qi exhaustion. "One" is the completed number of Water. Since Water controls Fire, death occurs within one day. The Classics state: When the Hand Shaoyin Qi exhausts, vessels become obstructed. Obstructed vessels mean blood does not flow. Non-flowing blood causes luster to fade, resulting in a complexion as dark as soot. This indicates blood dies first; condition worsens on Ren days, and death occurs on Gui days.
According to the *Mai Jing*: If a patient's Heart Qi exhausts, they die after one day. How is this known? Shoulder breathing with fixed, turning eyes leads to immediate death.
Edema around the umbilicus and dorsum pedis, facial swelling with yellow hue. Involuntary diarrhea soiling clothes. Muscle texture rough and dry, accompanied by everted lips; disaster strikes within twelve double-hours (shi).
Zhang Shixian stated: The umbilicus is Shenque (CV8). Dorsum pedis refers to the upper part of the foot. Floating yellow refers to yellowish edema. The Classics state: When the Foot Taiyin Qi exhausts, vessels fail to nourish the lips. The lips are the external manifestation of muscles. Without vessel nourishment, muscles lose smoothness. Loss of muscle smoothness leads to muscle distension. Distended muscles cause lip eversion. Lip eversion indicates that muscles die first; condition worsens on Jia days, and death occurs on Yi days.
According to the *Mai Jing*: If a patient's Spleen Qi exhausts, they die after twelve days. How is this known? Cold mouth, swollen feet, abdominal heat, distension, involuntary diarrhea without timing or limit.
