(Distinguishing Zang and Fu organ pulses by the depth of pressure)
Left Cun (Cun position on the left wrist). The site where the Heart and Small Intestine meridians' Qi emerge.
Pressing heavily to the level of the blood vessels: a pulse that is floating, large, and scattered is the Heart pulse. It belongs to the Zang organs. Some say it is floating, choppy, and short. Pressing lightly to the level of the skin and hair: a pulse that is floating, slippery, and long is the Small Intestine pulse.
It belongs to the Fu organs.
Left Guan (Guan position on the left wrist). The site where the Liver and Gallbladder meridians' Qi emerge.
Pressing heavily to the level of the sinews and bones: a pulse that is deep, short, wiry, and rapid is the Liver pulse. It belongs to the Zang organs. Pressing lightly to the level of the skin and hair: a pulse that is wiry, tight, floating, and long is the Gallbladder pulse.
It belongs to the Fu organs.
Left Chi (Chi position on the left wrist). The site where the Kidney and Bladder meridians' Qi emerge.
Pressing heavily to the level of the sinews and bones: a pulse that is deep and slow is the Kidney pulse. It belongs to the Zang organs. Pressing lightly to the level of the skin and hair: a pulse that is deep, solid, and slightly rapid is the Bladder pulse.
It belongs to the Fu organs.
Right Cun (Cun position on the right wrist). The site where the Lung and Large Intestine meridians' Qi emerge.
Pressing slightly heavily between the skin and flesh: a pulse that is floating, short, and choppy is the Lung pulse. It belongs to the Zang organs. Pressing lightly to the level of the skin and hair: a pulse that is floating, short, and rapid is the Large Intestine pulse.
It belongs to the Fu organs.
Right Guan (Guan position on the right wrist). The site where the Spleen and Stomach meridians' Qi emerge.
Pressing heavily to the level of the muscles: a pulse that is moderate and slow is the Spleen pulse. It belongs to the Zang organs. Pressing lightly to the level of the skin and hair: a pulse that is slightly moderate and slightly rapid is the Stomach pulse.
It belongs to the Fu organs.
Right Chi (Chi position on the right wrist). The site where the Mingmen (Gate of Life) and Sanjiao (Triple Burner) meridians' Qi emerge.
Pressing heavily to the level of the sinews and bones: a pulse that is deep, solid, and rapid is the Mingmen pulse. It belongs to the Zang organs. Pressing lightly to the level of the skin and hair: a pulse that is deep, solid, and slightly rapid is the Sanjiao pulse.
It belongs to the Fu organs.
Commentary by Ji: The association of Mingmen and Sanjiao with the Right Chi position has been thoroughly discussed and corrected in the *Pulse Formula Corrections* (Maijue Kanwu). There is no need to repeat it here. However, this method of distinguishing Zang and Fu organ pulses based on the lightness or heaviness of pressure is unclear in its basis. One might speculate that since Zang organs belong to Yin and govern sinking, while Fu organs belong to Yang and govern floating, the diagnostic protocol adopts lightness and heaviness according to this theoretical principle? Other editions state that the interior corresponds to Zang organs and the exterior to Fu organs; the rationale is similar. However, consulting the *Mai Jing* (Classic of Pulse Diagnosis) and texts such as the *Suwen* (Basic Questions) and *Nanjing* (Classic of Difficult Issues), only the pulses of the Five Zang organs are discussed in detail. Regarding the pulses of the Six Fu organs, although mentioned, they are not elaborated upon. Although pathological pulses of the Six Fu organs are occasionally mentioned, the diagnostic methods regarding the depth of pressure are not addressed. Perhaps it is assumed that the Zang pulse can encompass the Fu pulse? Or perhaps knowing the Zang pulse renders the diagnosis of the Fu pulse unnecessary? Or maybe diseases in the Six Fu organs are mild, resulting in insignificant pulse changes? I cannot comprehend the intent behind these views. Furthermore, the descriptions of the Five Zang pulses and Six Fu pulses here differ significantly from those in the subsequent chapters, and their source remains unknown. Therefore, I record this for future scholars to clarify.
