(Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lung, Kidney)
The Heart stores the [Jing] (Essence) of the body (ruler). The Small Intestine acts as its [brother] (Official of Reception and Containment).
The Heart is the Official of the Ruler, the master of the entire body. The Classics state: "If the Ruler is clear, the subordinates are at peace." Mentioning the "Jing of the body" does not reflect the supremacy of the Heart. "Jing" has two meanings: one is the innate [Jing], which the Classics describe as: "When two spirits interact, they combine to form a shape, often existing before the body; this is called Jing." This is not exclusively governed by the Heart. The other is the Jing of the five zang and six fu organs. The Classics state: "The Kidney receives and stores it." The Kidney is the residence of Jing, not what the Heart governs. The Heart and Small Intestine are exterior-interior pairs, analogous to Yin and Yang in broad terms, or husband and wife in narrow terms, and cannot be referred to as brothers. The Small Intestine is the Official of Reception and Containment. ("Sheng" is pronounced with the level tone.)
The Heart corresponds to the Li trigram, prospers in summer, belongs to Fire, and generates brightness towards the South.
It handles matters regardless of size, is most resourceful, and possesses great spiritual intelligence. Internally, it circulates within the [Sea of Blood] (The Chong Mai is the Sea of the Twelve Meridians. *Ling Shu* states: "The Sea of Blood is the Chong Mai." Furthermore, the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian and the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian are exterior-interior pairs. The Heart governs blood; upwards it transforms into breast milk, downwards into menstrual water. The Classics state: "Diseases of the Two Yangs originate in the Heart and Spleen, leading to amenorrhea in women." The Heart Song says: "Internally circulating in the Sea of Blood," referring to this. Li Fan incorrectly identified the Liver as the Sea of Blood and forced a connection.)
Externally, it manifests in the tongue, governing prosperity. If the seven orifices are open, there is wisdom; if the three hairs behind the ears are visible, there is superior intelligence. If contrary to the season, sorrow remains unresolved; if compliant with the season, the pulse is洪 (Hong/Full) without alarm (A Hong pulse appearing in summer is a compliant sign, a normal pulse, so why alarm?).
Body fluids exit through sweat pores, moistening the skin; voice is clear, breath is fresh. If an accumulation occurs in autumn, it is named Fuliang (Fuliang Accumulation), resembling an arm winding around the navel.
The accumulation of the Heart is named Fuliang, originating from *Nan Jing*. However, the Fuliang described in *Nei Jing · Fuzhong Lun* refers to Wind Root, not a Heart accumulation.
In compliant conditions, observe the color of a rooster's comb (ruddy); in ominous conditions, look for congealed blood. During diagnosis, one must be prudent and carefully inspect. Excess patterns manifest as dreams of worry, fear, and strangeness; deficiency patterns manifest as illusions of fire and light.
*Ling Shu* states: "Correct pathogens invade internally from outside without a fixed abode, traveling together with Ying and Wei Qi, and flying with Hun and Po, causing restless sleep and frequent dreaming, etc."
Weighing twelve liang, its size is average and consistent with normal standards.
