In years of Southern Polarity (Nanzheng), such as Jiazi and Jiawu, if Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) governs the Heaven position (Si Tian), then both Cun positions (Cun pulse) on the wrists should be non-responsive (pulse is faint or imperceptible), as described in the preceding text. In years of Southern Polarity, such as Jisi and Jihai, if Jueyin (Terminal Yin) governs the Heaven position, its left interstitial Qi is Shaoyin, and its right interstitial Qi is Taiyang (Greater Yang); thus, the right Cun pulse should be non-responsive, as described previously. In years of Southern Polarity, such as Jichou and Jiwei, if Taiyin (Greater Yin) governs the Heaven position, its left interstitial Qi is Shaoyang (Lesser Yang), and its right interstitial Qi is Shaoyin; thus, the left Cun pulse should be non-responsive, as described previously. If in a year of Southern Polarity, the Three Yin (Sanyin) are at the Earth position (Zai Quan) rather than governing the Heaven position, then the non-responsive site is not at the Cun but at the Chi (Chi pulse). Therefore it is said: "In years of Southern Polarity, when the Three Yin are at the Heaven position, the Cun pulses do not respond; if the Three Yin are at the Earth position, the Chi pulses do not respond." This is what is meant. Regarding all kinds of "non-responsiveness," by diagnosing with the opposite methods of Northern and Southern Polarity, it becomes clear: for Southern Polarity where the pathology is primarily at the Cun, Northern Polarity's pathology is primarily at the Chi; and for Southern Polarity where the pathology is primarily at the Chi, Northern Polarity's pathology is primarily at the Cun. Thus, the principles of the pulse become self-evident.

The *Suwen: Treatise on the Great Discussion of the Five Movements and Six Qi* states: "Disease occurs when the position is inappropriate; disease ceases when the positions shift alternately." In both Southern and Northern Polarity, whether Shaoyin governs the Heaven position or is at the Earth position, it is called "dangerous if the position is lost." The discussion on the internal movement laws within Northern and Southern Polarity states: Years of Jia and Ji are Southern Polarity, while the remaining four movements (Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu) are Northern Polarity. In Southern Polarity years, whether governing the Heaven position or at the Earth position, the Earth Movement (Tu Yun) prevails. For the remaining Northern Polarity years, the movement is determined by the Qi at the Earth position. For example, in Northern Polarity years of Si and Hai, with Jueyin governing the Heaven position, the movement follows the Shaoyang Fire Movement at the Earth position; similarly, in Yin and Shen years, with Shaoyang governing the Heaven position, the movement follows the Jueyin Wood Movement at the Earth position. Other years follow this pattern. Only in Northern Polarity years of Chen and Xu, with Taiyang governing the Heaven position, should the Earth Movement at the Earth position prevail. However, because in Northern Polarity, the minister dare not execute the ruler's order, the Metal Movement (Jin Yun) is executed instead. Metal is the son of Earth, thereby completing the four movements of Wood, Fire, Metal, and Water.
Reversal at Cun and Chi indicates death; Intersection of Yin and Yang indicates peril. What is called "reversal" (Fan) is when a pulse appears where it should not, and fails to appear where it should; this is Reversal at Cun and Chi. What is called "intersection" (Jiao) is the crossing of diagonal positions: the Yin pulse, which should be on the left, crosses to the right; the Yang pulse, which should be on the right, crosses to the left.
For instance, if the Chi pulse, which should not appear, instead floats and is large, while the Cun pulse, which should float and be large, instead sinks and is thin; or if the Cun pulse, which should not appear, instead floats and is large, while the Chi pulse, which should float and be large, instead sinks and is thin; this is called Reversal at Cun and Chi. The *Suwen: Treatise on the Great Discussion of the Five Movements and Six Qi* states: "Death results from Reversal at Cun and Chi." For example, if the right pulse, which should not appear, instead floats and is large, while the left pulse, which should float and be large, instead sinks and is thin; or if the left pulse, which should not appear, instead floats and be large, while the right pulse, which should float and be large, instead sinks and is thin. The classics state: "Death results from Left-Right Intersection." For example, in years of Shaoyin, with Shaoyin on the left, the left pulse should be non-responsive, yet instead appears on the right; the Yang pulse, originally on the right, instead shifts to the left; this is the position exchanged by Shaoyin, representing either the Shaoyang or Taiyang pulse. Therefore it is said: "Intersection of Yin and Yang leads to death." This occurs only in the eight years of Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei, Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai. If in years of Shaoyin, Shaoyin is at the Chi, the Chi pulse should be non-responsive, yet instead appears at the Cun; the Yang pulse, originally at the Cun, instead shifts to the Chi. Therefore it is said: "Reversal at Cun and Chi leads to death." This occurs only in the four years of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You. However, it must be that both Cun and Chi are reversed, and both Yin and Yang intersect, for the condition to be considered critical. If it is merely that the pulse at the proper position should have responded but did not, this is simply non-response of Yin Qi, indicating mere illness, and does not fall under the categories of Intersection of Yin and Yang or Reversal at Cun and Chi. One must not be rigidly dogmatic.

The *Suwen: Treatise on the Great Discussion of the Heavenly Origin* states: "Death results from Reversal at Cun and Chi." This refers specifically to discussions involving Shaoyin governing the Heaven position or being at the Earth position in both Southern and Northern Polarity.

The *Suwen: Treatise on the Great Discussion of the Five Movements and Six Qi* states: "Death results from Intersection of Yin and Yang." Excluding cases where Shaoyin governs the Heaven position or is at the Earth position, this discussion applies only to Jueyin and Taiyin governing the Heaven position or being at the Earth position. A detailed examination of diagrams from later generations shows they all revere Zhang Zhongjing, yet most do not conform to the original intent of the classics. It is unknown if they truly originated from Zhang Zhongjing. If other books contain diagrams without explanations, their meaning becomes even more obscure. I rely solely on the original intent of the classics to supplement these texts.
