The Spleen and Stomach are the officials responsible for storage and transport; the five flavors originate from them. The Stomach is the sea of water and grain, qi, and blood. The Stomach has a capacity of one chi and five cun in diameter, five cun in width, and two chi and six cun in length, with transverse curvature. It can hold three dou and five sheng of water and grain. Typically, it retains two dou of grain and one dou and five sheng of water when full. This meridian is characterized by abundant qi and blood. The *Nan Jing* states: "The Stomach weighs two jin and one liang."
The Stomach implies gathering; food and drink gather here, thus it is called the Mansion of Grain.
The upper opening of the Stomach is named Fenmen (Cardia). The essence of food and drink is transported upward from here to the Spleen and Lungs, and disseminated throughout the meridians. The lower opening of the Stomach, which is the upper opening of the Small Intestine, is named Youmen (Pylorus).

The Spleen is also an official responsible for storage and transport; the five flavors originate from it. Its shape is like a knife blade. It adheres to the left side of the upper back via the same membrane as the Stomach, located below the eleventh thoracic vertebra. It moves upon hearing sounds; this movement rubs against the Stomach, thereby governing digestion and transformation. Its association is with the muscles, and its flourishing aspect is manifested in the lips. It opens into the mouth. This meridian is characterized by abundant qi and scarce blood. The *Nan Jing* states: "The Spleen weighs two jin and three liang, is broad and flat three cun, long five cun, and has half a jin of loose pancreas (San Gao). It primarily envelops blood, warms the five Zang organs, and houses Yi (Intent) and Zhi (Will)." Mr. Hua Shi (Hua Shou) stated: "It covers the Tai Cang (Stomach)." Hua Yuanhua stated: "The Spleen governs the breakdown of the five grains and nourishes the four peripheries."
The Spleen implies humility/lowness. Located below the Stomach, it assists Stomach Qi in transforming grain.
The *Lost Chapters · Treatise on Acupuncture Methods* states: "The Spleen is the official of admonition; comprehensive wisdom arises from it."
