Treats the recurrence of pathogenic cold-water qi in winter, characterized by excess cold qi in the Foot-Taiyang Bladder channel and hyperactivity of Water in the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney. Following the principle that "the child can cause the mother to become full," the Hand-Taiyin Lung becomes excessive, which in turn insults Earth (Spleen/Stomach), causing Fire (Heart) and Wood (Liver) to suffer from pathogenic factors. Symptoms include obstruction and pain in the lower back, upper back, chest, and diaphragm; frequent sneezing; salivation; tearing from the eyes; continuous flow of turbid nasal discharge or polyp-like blockage leading to loss of smell; cough with frothy sputum; upper body heat like fire and lower body cold like ice; paroxysmal headache; sensation of fire in the eyes; blurred vision; tinnitus and deafness; aversion to wind and cold or preference for sunlight at the head, nose, and mouth; restlessness at night; sensation of phlegm obstruction in the diaphragm and throat; loss of taste; contraction, urgency, and pain in both hypochondria; loose teeth and inability to chew; sweating in the genital area; coldness of the anterior yin; staggering gait and difficulty in daily activities; cold palms; numbness due to wind-bi; frequent urination with polyuria during the day and nocturia; frequent yawning; shortness of breath and panting; insufficient qi and weak respiration; sudden and uncontrollable urinary incontinence. In women: leukorrhea, severe pain in the vagina radiating to the heart, and darkened complexion. In men: testicular pain radiating to the heart and abdomen, dull pain, reddish-brown facial color, poor appetite, irregular bowel movements, irritability, cholera-like symptoms, rebellious qi with abdominal urgency and distension, pale skin, incomplete expulsion of flatus, inability to strain due to abdominal weakness, borborygmus, tendon tension below the knees, severe scapular pain. These are all caused by the recurrence of cold-water qi and the mixture of Fire and Earth qi.
Prepared Aconite Root (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), wrapped in cloth, peeled and de-navelled, 3 fen; Dried Ginger (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum), prepared and powdered, 3 fen; Saposhnikovia Root (Radix Saposhnikoviae), chopped into bean-sized pieces; Apricot Seed (Semen Pruni Armeniacae), soaked in hot water, peeled and pitted, ground separately into a paste; Ginseng Root (Radix Ginseng), 5 fen; Angelica Sinensis Root (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), wine-washed, 6 fen; Pinellia Tuber (Rhizoma Pinelliae), soaked in hot water seven times; Cimicifuga Rhizome (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), chopped, each 7 fen; Licorice Root (Radix Glycyrrhizae), chopped; Ligusticum Rhizome (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong), each 8 fen; Bupleurum Root (Radix Bupleuri), chopped into bean-sized pieces; Notopterygium Rhizome (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), chopped into bean-sized pieces, each 1 qian; White Sunflower Head (Capitulum Helianthi Anni), five flowers, center removed and finely cut.
Combine the above herbs as one dose. Add five cups of water and decoct until two cups remain. Then add:
Tangerine Peel (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), 5 fen; Cardamom Seed (Fructus Amomi Rotundus), roasted in flour, peeled, 1 qian; Astragalus Root (Radix Astragali), 1 qian.
Add these to the pot and decoct again until one cup remains. Then add the following:
Rehmannia Root (Radix Rehmanniae Recens), 2 fen, wine-washed; Phellodendron Bark (Cortex Phellodendri), wine-soaked; Coptis Rhizome (Rhizoma Coptidis), wine-soaked; Bitter Orange Fruit (Fructus Aurantii), each 3 fen.
These four ingredients should be soaked separately in fresh water for one day in advance. Additionally, prepare:
Asarum Root (Radix Heterotrichii), 2 fen; Szechwan Lovage Rhizome (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), finely powdered; Vitex Fruit (Fructus Viticis Negundo), each 3 fen.
Soak these three ingredients separately in half a large cup of fresh water for one day. Combine the decoction of the main herbs (including Huangbo etc.) to make one large cup. Do not filter the dregs. Add the pre-soaked liquid to the main decoction. Decoct over fire again until one large cup remains. Strain and take warm on an empty stomach. This formula is also effective for treating biting of cheeks, lips, and tongue, and stiffness of the tongue root. Avoid meat broth; eating meat is permissible as it does not aggravate the fire pathogen in the channels. Generally, this formula is suitable for those with cold in the Kidney and Bladder channels and deficiency of Yuan Qi (Original Qi).
