Treats pediatric accumulation due to deficiency, manifesting as tidal fever or alternating chills and heat, chest and abdominal distension, fullness, and pain.
Cinnabar (Shachen, 1 liang), Realgar-derived Borneol? No, Niu Huang (Bovis Calculus), Sheng Long Nao (Crystal Borneol), She Xiang (Moschus) (each 1 fen), Jin Bo (Gold Leaf, 14 pieces), Fen Shuang (Calomel), Ni Fen (Calomel/White Lead?), La (Beeswax).
Process into pills the size of a bullet. Adjust dosage according to the patient's excess or deficiency. Administer with Long Nao Jiang Shui (Borneol water) after midnight; if the internal organs are deficient, administer with Long Nao Mi Yin (Borneol rice drink). Take three pills per dose, sized like small beans. If the medicinal effect is too slow, flatten the pill; for severe conditions, increase to ten pills. All pills must be pricked with a needle to create several holes to facilitate the release of medicinal power. For pediatric accumulation, make pills the size of mung beans; this is particularly effective for treating pediatric vomiting and reflux. This medicine most effectively eliminates chest distress and deficiency-type accumulation.

Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), baked dry and ground into fine powder.
Apply the powder to the umbilicus frequently until self-healed. My family's child often suffered from damp umbilicus for over fifty days. Other applications were ineffective. *Sheng Hui Fang* contains over ten prescriptions. I tried them all in order, and upon reaching this prescription, it dried after one application. Later, urine entered the wound causing recurrence, but healed after another application.
Ma Ya Xiao (Niter), Bai Fan (Alumen), Huang Dan (Minium).
Grind these together, seal in a container, fire until red hot, invert over moist ground overnight, then grind again. Add Ban Qian of Long Nao (Borneol). Administer with Gan Cao Tang (Licorice Decoction), one character measure or half a qian.
Indicated for chronic impetigo that does not heal and otic sores.
Shi Lu (?), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), equal parts.
Wash the sore with raw Gan Cao (Licorice) decoction, apply the medicine, and it heals in one day.
Miscellaneous records and novels contain several prescriptions which, having been recorded in books, must have good efficacy. I record them here. *Bei Meng Suo Yan* records the treatment for burns: A servant of Sun Guangxian was making pancakes; a maid holding a child near the stove accidentally dropped the child into the fire. They applied vinegar mud to it. By morning, there was no pain nor scar. Thus, *Chao Ye Qian Zai* records the treatment for venomous snake bites: Moxibustion with moxa cones at the bite site draws out the toxic qi, leading to recovery. Similar methods apply to bites from harmful insects or horse sweat entering wounds. It also records tendon rupture repair: Juice is extracted from Xuan Fu Gen (Inulae Radix), the severed tendons are aligned, coated with juice, and bandaged, restoring continuity. Children in Shu who run away often have their tendons cut; this method repairs them with 100% success.
*Guang Wu Xing Ji* records the treatment for dysphagia (Yie Ji): In the Yonghui era of Tang, a monk in Jiangzhou suffered from dysphagia for years. Before death, he ordered his throat to be opened, revealing a fish-like object with two heads and scales, jumping in a bowl. Various foods placed in the bowl turned to water. The temple was processing indigo; adding a little indigo caused the creature to avoid it and dissolve into water. People thus use indigo to treat dysphagia.
*Guo Shi Bu* records: A man named Bai Cen treated back carbuncles (Fa Bei) with perfect success. He later served as a General in Huainan. The Governor Gao Shi coerced him for his prescription, but it was not very effective. Bai Cen went to Jiujiang and was eaten by a tiger. An驿站 official found the true prescription in his bag. Wang Shengzhi of Taiyuan copied and disseminated it. Later, Kong Nan of Lugu obtained Bai Cen's prescription from Wang, calling it "Ling Fang" (Spiritual Prescription), detailed below.
Lu Zi Xihua was from Luoyang, orphaned and poor. Wei, a Writing Master, had an old friendship with his father and married his daughter to Xihua. Xihua took the Scholar Exam five times without passing. He entered Mount Wangwu with his friend Zhang Yuanbo, unknown to others. Soon, Xihua developed a back carbuncle, with pus and blood covering his body, exposing bones and sinews. He told Yuanbo, "I will die! Carry me to the water's edge, await my fate." Yuanbo complied, leaving him exposed for several nights. Suddenly, a Hu monk arrived with a staff, examined the wound, and said, "The membrane is intact; it can be cured." He applied medicine from a box onto soft silk, dressing the wound. After four to five days, new flesh grew; after eight to nine days, the flesh was level, and diet returned to normal. The monk said, "I am going elsewhere. Worry about recurrence; this disease has no cure." He showed the prescription and asked for secrecy. Xihua bowed, "Without you, my bones would be in the fields. Though I cannot repay you fully, let me express my gratitude. Why leave so soon?" The monk said, "I came because you were sick. Now you are well, I go. Why repay?" He left and vanished. Xihua reported this to Wei. Wei requested the prescription, but Xihua refused. Wei knew he could not get it. He reported to Pei Huiqing, Vice Minister of Personnel, who used official rank to entice Xihua. Xihua replied, "I cultivate literature for fame, not sell prescriptions for advancement." He failed the exam and returned. Later, the Henan Prefect told Wei, "I have a plan to get it." Wei asked how. The Prefect said, "Make him break the law, then pardon him in exchange for the secret prescription." A month later, Xihua was indeed convicted and prepared to commit suicide. The Prefect persuaded him, saying he could be pardoned if he revealed the prescription. Xihua remained firm, showing no desire to live. The Prefect released him. Xihua realized he lost the support of the Personnel Department and felt slighted by his father-in-law. Although he studied harder, his literary talent declined. Five years later, he failed the Spring Official examination again and stopped traveling. In Liangsong, his cousin Li Qian, Magistrate of Shangqiu, stayed for half a year. Due to excessive alcohol and meat, his carbuncle recurred. Li Qian wanted to use the previous prescription but feared exposure, hesitating for a long time. Li Qian understood his intent and advised, "I heard of the 'Divine Famous Prescription'. Your illness is critical! Why fear showing me the prescription and neglect treatment, contrary to preserving life and lineage?" Reluctantly, Xihua orally taught it. Li Qian verified it three times. When the medicine was ready, Li Qian applied it personally. The illness subsided quickly. Xihua wandered to Jingman, never to be seen again. Li Qian copied the prescription fifty times and distributed it to relatives to correct Xihua's eccentricity. The former County Magistrate of Jintan, Runzhou, obtained the prescription. He stored the herbs and traveled to Western Shu, saving five or six dying people. He wanted to pass the story to posterity but was delayed by family duties. In the winter of the tenth month of the tenth year of Zhenyuan, at Qiupu, Zhou Nan visited Huo Yuan. After a long night talk about medical texts, Xihua (implied context shift or Zhou Nan recording what he learned?) gave the prescription to Zhou Nan to record.
The prescription states: Back carbuncles originate internally and emerge externally. Heat-toxin stagnates in the chest/diaphragm, coagulating qi and blood, steaming the empty areas of the back. Initially, within three to five days, pulse obstruction causes stifling sensation, gradually swelling, appearing on skin, condensing into pus. The prescription is as follows:
Bai Mai Fan Shi (Wheat Meal Stone, yellow-white color, best if resembling wheat meal, fired in charcoal, soaked in vinegar ten times), Bai Lian End (Ampelopsis Radix powder, equal parts to stone).
Lu Jiao (Deer Horn, cut 2-3 cun, do not use naturally shed ones; those with brain bone attached are not natural sheds. Fire in charcoal until smoke ceases, grind to powder, proportional to the first two ingredients).
Grind all into fine powder. Take aged rice vinegar, boil in a yin vessel until "fish-eye" bubbles appear. Add the powders, mix into a thin paste. Apply with a comb. Cover the swelling, leaving only a finger-width area at the head open to vent heat. If not yet purulent, it should resolve internally. If a head forms, keep it small. No case fails. Avoid touching the sore with hands. *Liu Mengde Chuan Xin Fang* also mentions this but is less complete.
*Northern Qi Book* records: Yang Zunyan suffered from back carbuncle swelling. Ma Siming applied refined stone, curing him immediately. The prescription takes coarse yellow stone the size of a goose egg, fires it red hot, puts it in strong vinegar. Debris falls into vinegar. Repeat firing until stone is exhausted. Collect debris, dry, grind, mix with vinegar, apply to swelling. Similar to *Bai Cen Fang*.
*Duyi Zhi* records: In the Zhenguan era of Tang, Zhang Baozang, a Jinwu guard, returned to Liyang after duty. He saw youths hunting and eating fresh meat by a tree, sighing, "Zhang Baozang is seventy, never ate such wine and meat, how sad!" A monk pointed and said, "Within sixty days, you will reach third-rank official. Not difficult." Then vanished. Baozang was amazed. Returned to capital. Emperor Taizong suffered from gas dysentery; doctors failed. Edict offered reward for a cure. Baozang had suffered this, submitted a prescription of Milk-decocted Bi Bo (Long Pepper). Taizong recovered immediately. Ministers were ordered to grant fifth-rank office. Wei Zheng hesitated, delaying for a month. Illness recurred. Emperor asked, "Did the milk-Bi Bo work? Give another sip." Thinking, "Ordered fifth-rank for prescription, why no appointment?" Wei Zheng feared, "After edict, did not know civil/military officials." Emperor angry, "Cured Chancellor, why not grant third-rank? You are son, inferior to you?" Ordered, "Grant third-rank Civil Official, Honglu Temple Qing." Exactly sixty days. The prescription per dose uses...
*Ma Tixing* records: Medical ancestor Zhongsu Gong, in Tiansheng era, as Minister of Works knowing Haozhou. A household maid had a fistula for over ten years. One day, an old soldier sweeping said he saw a doctor from afar claiming fistulas are curable in an instant. Maid said, "I've seen many doctors, don't believe it." Someone told Zhongsu Gong, who summoned the doctor. Doctor said, "Definitely curable. Need one live eel, 5-7 bamboo needles." Doctor threw eel on ground; eel curled. Punctured eel with bamboo needles, covered the wound for a long time. Removed, saw dozens of white worms like needles in the eel. Doctor put them in a cup, wriggling like threads. Covered again, got more, repeated 5-6 times. Doctor said, "Worms not all gone, but rest are small." Finally prescribed common medicine. Household had Bing Lang (Areca Seed) and Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) powder to apply. Doctor didn't use drugs initially. Next day, use dry Ai (Mugwort) decoction. Add 2-3 qian Bai Fan (Alumen), wash wound, then apply medicine. Elderly have cold qi/blood, need Ai to assist Yang; Ai also kills worms. Do this twice, then flesh grows, heals in less than a month. As predicted. Doctor said, "If a sore is untreated for a month, worms appear. Worms move, dragging qi and blood. So fistulas cannot close quickly or they form painful knots, caused by worms." Also said, "When illness lasts a month without cure, exhaustion follows. Deficient women tonify Spleen blood; children prevent convulsive malnutrition. Both diseases treat malaria. This doctor is unknown but effective, truly a good physician." His words are reasonable, so I include them...
