Treats pediatric *gan* diarrhea (chronic diarrhea due to spleen-stomach deficiency and food stagnation) that does not stop, with daily frequency uncountable, gradual emaciation, and ineffectiveness of various medications.
*Huangbai* (Phellodendri Cortex), processed with honey; *Huanglian* (Coptidis Rhizoma), lightly stir-fried; *Taogenbaipi* (Pruni Persicae Radicis Cortex) (each 1 fen); *Muxiang* (Aucklandiae Radix); *Nongpo* (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), processed with ginger juice; *Dingxiang* (Caryophylli Flos); *Binglang* (Arecae Semen) (each 1 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. For each dose, take one "zi" (a traditional small weight unit); for children over three years old, take half a qian; for five- to six-year-old children, take one qian. Mix with rice water prepared from *Zisu* (Perilla Leaf) and *Mu Gua* (Chaenomeles Fruit), and administer before milk or meals, three times a day. My family's child once suffered from diarrhea for over a hundred days, becoming so thin that only skin and bones remained, and numerous remedies failed to cure him. A military supervisor named Zhongli saw this and said, "Why not take Wu Po San? It will cure him immediately." I then asked what medicine constituted Wu Po San. He replied, "It is an ancient prescription. Many households possess it." I therefore requested the formula. After administering two or three doses, efficacy was observed. Another grandson also suffered from *gan* diarrhea with a critical condition; after two doses, the condition stabilized. If the disease is deep-seated, recovery is certain within one to two days of administration. This medication is invariably effective for *gan* diarrhea. The medicinal nature is slightly warm; thus, it may not be suitable for cases of sudden acute heat diarrhea.
Pediatric diseases often arise because fright causes the Heart Qi to fail to circulate freely. Stagnation generates phlegm-saliva, which rebels upward causing severe illness. It is advisable to regulate the Small Intestine function, clear Heart Heat, and ensure the child suffers little fright, thereby preventing disease formation.
*Hanshuishi* (Natron); *Huashi* (Talcum), ground in water until resembling rice washings, coarse particles removed, fine sediment retained, drained, and re-ground until silent (each 3 liang); *Gancao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 liang).
Based on the child's age, administer with cold water in hot months and warm water in cold months. For any case involving fright or Heart Heat causing restlessness and inability to lie down comfortably, administer one dose. Adding *Longnao* (Borneolum Syntheticum) yields better results.
Treats pediatric fright accumulation (qi-blood stasis or stagnation due to fright), with effects of calming the Heart and transforming phlegm-saliva.
*Zhusha* (Cinnabaris) (1 fen); *Badou* (Crotonis Fructus), thirty grains, peel and membrane removed, oil pressed out completely; *Banxia* (Pinelliae Rhizoma), washed seven times in boiling water, ground into powder, and stir-fried (2 qian); *Xingren* (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), five kernels, processed and peeled.
The above ingredients are bound with paste to form pills the size of mung beans. Two-year-old children take one pill, administered with decoction of *Jingjie* (Schizonepetae Spica) and *Bohe* (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba); three-year-olds take two pills; five-year-olds take three pills. If fright pathogens are latent inside, the medicine will expel them completely, after which regular medication resumes; if there is no fright, the medicine will not descend/expel.
