Treatment for back carbuncles (back sores), abscesses, boils, and all kinds of suppurative swellings.
Ingredients: Nifen (Calomel/Red Sublimate, a compound of mercury and sulfur), Mercury, Sulfur (each 1 fen, ground together); Large Croton seeds kernels (14 pieces).
Preparation: First, arrange the Croton seed kernels in a single layer at the bottom of a pot (diao). Press the three aforementioned substances onto the Croton seeds to make them level. Cover with an earthenware vessel or a cup, seal the four sides with wet paper to prevent gas leakage. Slowly heat from all sides using charcoal fire. Occasionally dip the bottom of the pot into cold water. Repeat heating and dipping frequently until proper. The endpoint is determined by testing: place one drop of water on the inner bottom of the cover; if it dries like a soybean, add another; continue until three consecutive drops dry instantly. After cooling, grind the medicine with aged rice decoction, form into 23 pills. Take one pill per dose, swallowed with warm boiled water. This will induce the discharge of foul matter, followed by nourishing the body with white porridge. My clan father treasured this prescription and rarely shared it. People in Wu often knew of this medicine but could not obtain the authentic formula. One pill saves one person, with no recorded deaths. Once the toxin is discharged, pain ceases immediately, and the sore dries up.
Zha Mu Ye (Dried Leaves of Quercus variabilis, 4 liang), Gan He Ye (Dried Lotus Leaf, 4 liang), Xuan Cao Gen (Dried Rhizome of Hemerocallis citrina, 2 liang), Gan Cao Jie (Gancao Joints, 1 liang), Di Yu (Sanguisorbae Radix, 1 liang).
Preparation: Finely chop the above herbs. For each dose, take half a liang, add two bowls of water, boil down to one bowl. Divide into two doses, taken morning and evening. Boil the dregs again as one dose. If pus and blood are present, they will be expelled naturally, bringing relief; if pus and blood are retained internally, they will pass through the large intestine; if not yet formed into pus, they will dissipate spontaneously. Avoid all toxic foods. If there is an open sore, apply the following external medicine.
Tong Ming Niu Pi Jiao (Transparent Beef Skin Glue, 1 liang, melted with half a sheng of water), Huang Dan (Lead Tetroxide, 1 liang, added to the glue and boiled for three to five times).
Preparation: Allow to cool to a lukewarm temperature. Apply to the sore mouth using a chicken feather. Open sores will heal and close; swelling that has not yet formed an ulcer will resolve internally. During the Yuanfeng era, Chancellor Wang Anshi developed a back carbuncle. Medical treatments were ineffective. He gradually became confused and unconscious, with a critical condition. Liang Yanyi, Magistrate of Shangyuan County and Chaofeng Lang, possessed this medicine, claiming its efficacy was miraculous, but kept the formula secret. Upon obtaining the medicine, Wang Anshi took it and passed about one sheng of foul matter via diarrhea, after which he recovered. He then presented the formula to the Chancellor, from whom I obtained it. For ordinary people taking this medicine, it does not cause severe purgation, but rather expels pus and blood.
