Gardenia (2 liang) Aconitum carmichaelii radix preparata (Pao, 1 liang)
For each dose, take 3 qian of the above herbs, add one da zhen (large cup) of water and 3 cun of Allium fistulosum bulb (Xiebai), decoct together until only 0.5 fen of liquid remains, and take warm. In Sizhou, there was a person who had been ill for over a year and could not be cured by various methods; after taking this prescription twice, he recovered immediately.
(My family's old prescription from *Boji* also records it with slight differences.)
Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 20 liang) Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng, 10 liang) Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 6 liang) Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi, 3 liang) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 3 liang) Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 2 liang) Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 1.5 liang) Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao) Poria (Baifuling) Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia, washed with hot water, 1 liang each) Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 2 liang in spring/summer, 3 liang in autumn/winter) Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang, 1.5 liang in spring/summer, 2 liang in autumn/winter) Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui, 3 liang in spring/summer, 4 liang in autumn/winter) Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (N Houpo, 2 liang, stir-fried with ginger juice) Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhiqiao, bran-fried, pith removed, 4 liang)
Grind the aforementioned twelve herbs into coarse powder and divide into six doses. Stir-fry slowly in a large pot until slightly reddish and fragrant, but do not burn. Remove and place on a board bed covered with clean paper to cool. Add the following three herbs to mix and harmonize Qi. For each dose, take 3 qian, add fresh ginger and jujube, decoct until 0.6 part of liquid remains, strain, and take. For Taiyang disease (Exterior syndrome) presenting with cold extremities, continuous sweating from deficiency, deep and fine pulse, cyanotic face, vomiting and regurgitation, add 1 qian of Shunyuan San and decoct together to take warm. For postpartum difficulty in labor where delivery has not occurred after two or three days, fetal death in utero, or maternal exhaustion and dryness of the birth canal, add Shunyuan San. Decoct with 0.7 part water and 0.3 part wine, administer two doses; once internal Qi and Blood are harmonized, delivery will occur. The dead fetus will be expelled within a few days; Shunyuan San is often used to assess the deficiency or excess of the mother. For Taiyang disease with fever and cold in the hypochondrium, add 3 cun of scallion stem and 7 grains of fermented soybean (Douchi) to decoct together. After consecutively taking two or three doses, recovery should come through sweating.
Aconitum kusnezoffii radix (Wutou, 2 liang) Aconitum carmichaelii radix preparata (Pao) Pinelliae Rhizoma (Tian Nanxing, 1 liang each, prepared) Costi Radix (Muxiang, 0.5 liang)
The above herbs were given to my great-uncle Qian Shi, who obtained this prescription at that time. Sold by dry goods merchants, hence in Wu region it is still called Shen's Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder). Generally, this powder can warm both interior and exterior. It is suitable for cases where both interior and exterior are affected by cold, with slow, fine, deep, and hidden pulses, cold extremities, and piloerection. These belong to the category of interior syndromes of Cold Damage (Shanghan). Drink three large cups generously. Recovery occurs when extremities become warm or when sweating ensues. Nowadays, famous doctors mostly use this powder to treat Qi disorders, with extreme efficacy. It harmonizes all Qi, unblocks blood collaterals, and nothing surpasses this medicine. When people suffer from Spleen Malaria, they first use Zijin Wan to purge downward, then take this powder; after several doses, most recover.
