Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Chuan Danggui) (half tael, washed and pounded separately), Galena Pulveratum (Qianfen) (half tael, the finest Luoyang variety is preferred), Borax (Pengsha) (two qian).
Grind the above ingredients together into an extremely fine powder. Take two qian per dose, mixed with a concentrated decoction of Caesalpinia Sappan Lignum (Sufang) juice. If the injury is located above the waist, consume half a bowl of plain noodle soup first, then take the medicine; if below the waist, take the medicine first, then consume the noodles. Continuously sip Caesalpinia Sappan Lignum (Sufang) juice. Prepare a porridge made of Oryza Sativa Glutinosa Semen (Nuomi, glutinous rice), mix in three qian of the medicinal powder, spread it onto paper or silk, and apply as a poultice to the injured area. If bones are fractured, secure them with bamboo or wooden splints, and wrap the exterior with paper or clothing.
Shi Shijun, an official from Chang'an, was once visiting the prefect. On the way, someone suddenly called his name. Shi turned around but could not identify the caller amidst the crowd. The next day, while passing through the market, he heard the call again. Looking back, he saw the person behind his horse and asked why they were calling him. The person replied, "I seek nothing from you, but I have come specifically to save you from impending disaster. Why did you not respond yesterday?" Shi thanked and apologized, wishing to dismount and converse, but the person stopped him, saying, "The market is no place for dismounting." He then took a book from his collar and handed it to Shi, saying, "Use this when difficulties arise." He then disappeared into the crowd. Upon returning home, Shi examined the book and found it contained this prescription.
Later, Shi arrived in the capital and was preparing to attend court. Standing outside the Right Ye Gate, his horse kicked out, causing him to fracture his leg and fall to the ground. He was subsequently trampled by the horse, fracturing his arm. Brought home, he lost consciousness multiple times. Emergency preparation and administration of this medicine, along with external bandaging, resulted in the cessation of pain by midnight, and complete recovery of his limbs.
Shi had a son who was a court official and well-known. People in the Guanzhong region often heard of this incident. During the Xining era, when the Baojia system was promoted, Liu Jun served as the Supervisor. Whenever there were injuries from falling off horses or being stabbed, he administered this medicine, which cured patients immediately. Those interested in obtaining the formula bribed the keeper of the prescriptions and stole two ingredients, but Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Chuan Danggui) was missing. The formula used by Tang Shijun was identical. Later, I met the Inspector of Judicial Administration of Liuzhe, who claimed to have obtained the formula directly from Shi Shijun. It is likely that during the promotion of the Baojia system, one ingredient was concealed.
Additionally, select Cyprinus Carpio Gallus (Huan Yu, grass carp) gallbladders in the twelfth lunar month, hang them under the north eaves to dry. For fish bone impaction (Gu Geng), take an amount equivalent to one seed of Gleditsia Sinensis Fructus (Zaojiao, Chinese tamarind), dissolve it in one he of wine, warm it, and drink. If vomiting occurs, the bone will be expelled; if not, continue drinking until vomiting ensues. Even if the bone has entered the stomach, causing prolonged pain and severe emaciation, administration will lead to its expulsion. If fresh grass carp gallbladder is unavailable, gallbladders from Cyprinus Carpio Linneus (Li Yu, common carp), Siniperca Chuatsi (Gui Yu, mandarin fish), or Carassius Auratus (Ji Yu, crucian carp) may be used, though they are inferior to the grass carp gallbladder. Those collected in the twelfth lunar month are best.
A patrol soldier once choked on a chicken bone in his abdomen, suffering constant severe pain. He could only consume congee, and each bite felt like a needle prick. This persisted for half a year, nearly killing him; he could only stand with the aid of a cane. After a single dose of this medicine, he vomited profusely. He felt an object exit his mouth; upon inspection, it was a chicken bone. The head was sharp as a thorn, while the tail, worn down by food digestion, was smooth and lustrous like a pearl.
