The dimensions of all acupoints (Shuxue, 穴位) vary according to the size of the person's body. Measurement must follow the principle of "left for males, right for females." Measure the middle segment of the finger; the center point between the two transverse creases constitutes one Cun (寸, a traditional Chinese unit of measurement).
When making moxa cones (Aizhu, 艾炷), they must be three Fen (分, 1/10th of a Cun) in height relative to the heel bone. If they are less than three Fen, there is a risk of covering the acupoint. If the meridians and collaterals (Jingmai, 经脉) within the acupoint are not sufficiently filled, the fire qi cannot circulate, and thus it will be unable to draw out the pathogenic factors (Xieqi, 邪气).
On the day of the Dragon Boat Festival, before sunrise, one should intuitively seek moxa stalks that resemble human figures. Plucking such moxa for moxibustion (Jiuzhi, 灸治) yields remarkable effects. I saw this recorded in a book during my childhood, but have forgotten which book it was. In reality, moxa does not truly resemble humans; it merely appears so in the interplay of light and shadow. It is merely a matter of subjective interpretation. All such methods are illusory, and none are truly real. What is there to doubt?
The Yellow Emperor stated: Using wood from trees such as pine, cypress, persimmon, mulberry, jujube, elm, willow, and bamboo for moxibustion by relying on fire will inevitably damage the muscles and blood. These must strictly be avoided. For obtaining fire, it is advisable to use flint striking. Alternatively, focusing sunlight using crystal or mirrors to generate solar fire is excellent. On cloudy days, using locust tree (Huaimu, 槐木) wood to generate fire is also good. After moxibustion, it is advisable to take Dihuang Wan (Cistanche Pill / Rehmannia Pill - *Note: Context implies a specific formula for deficiency syndromes*) to treat consumptive diseases (Laobing, 劳病).
Ingredients:
Fresh juice of Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Tongbian (Urine of a healthy child), and Haojiu (Good wine) — each two sheng (a unit of volume), boiled down into an extract/paste.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, removing the head/rhizome), Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, prepared with vinegar), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) — each one liang (approx. 37g).
Zhusha (Cinnabar), Shexiang (Moschus) — each half liang, finely ground.
Grind the above five ingredients (referring to the solid herbs: Chaihu, Biejia, Qinjiao, Zhusha, Shexiang) into powder. Mix with the previously prepared paste to form pills, sized like tung oil seeds. Take 15 to 20 pills per dose, washed down with warm wine. Strictly avoid raw, cold, and toxic foods.
Wang Youyuanlong said: The prescription "Qian Zifei's Formula for Treating Feng Da" (Great Wind Disease/Leprosy) is extremely effective. I once used it to treat patients. One night, I dreamed of a person who said, "I am a heavenly messenger, bringing this patient's illness to warn you. You have offended Heaven by your anger. If you continue to administer this treatment, you will contract this disease yourself. No medicine can save you." Fearing this, Qian Zifei stopped administering the treatment. I argue: If the disease sent by Heaven were incurable, then medicines would not work. Since the medicine is effective, it proves that Heaven cannot cause the disease. This must be the malevolent influence of the illness itself, fearing the power of this medicine and falsely invoking Heaven to prohibit its use. The illness of Marquis Jin of Jin was caused by two little boys (personifications of the pathogen). The red pill of Qian Zifei also appeared first in a dream, suggesting some unseen force was at play. Qian Zifei failed to discern this and was coerced by ghosts/spirits. I, however, am different. If the patient recovers, I am willing to substitute myself to bear their suffering. My family possesses this prescription, which can expel filth and evil from the abdomen. I tested it in Huangzhou, and the illness was indeed cured. Henceforth, I shall frequently use it to benefit others.
