(From *Wujing Zangfu Lun* by Wu Jing) Treats gastric Qi Huoluan (colic with vomiting and diarrhea), characterized by muscle cramps in the lower limbs and abdominal pain.
Xiangru Sui (Moslae Herba, spikes of Mosla chinensis, those that have undergone frost, 1.5 liang) Xin Nongpu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, fresh bark, taking the heart portion, 2 liang) Chuan Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 2 liang) Bai Biandou (Dolichoris Semen, 1 liang, roasted).
First, take 4 liang of ginger juice, and pound the Huanglian and Nongpu together until fine. Stir-fry them until black, then add Xiangru and Biandou, and grind all into powder.
Take 5 qian per dose. Add one zhan of water and one zhan of wine, decoct together until one zhan remains. Pour into a porcelain bottle, seal with wax paper, and sink to the bottom of a well. Wait until it is extremely cold, then consume at once. If two doses are taken, even those near death can be revived. This medicine is sold in the capital for 100 qian per dose. It also treats severe cutting pain in the lower abdomen caused by gastric Qi.
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) Bibo (Piperis Longi Fructus). Equal parts, both used raw.
Grind the above herbs into honey pills, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 20-30 pills with musk-infused water. On an empty stomach, take three times daily. Li Chengyi, Prefect of Guizhou, contracted Lanzhang (miasma of Lan region). His wife and children, several people, died successively. Two sons returned north of the Ling Mountains, both suffering from abdominal masses resembling melons, emaciated and suffering painfully to the point of death. Chen Yingzhi gave them this prescription. After nearly thirty doses, the qi masses dissipated completely. Yingzhi stated: "This is caused by mixed cold and heat; one must attack it with substances of both cold and heat properties."
Ouyang Wenzhonggong (Ouyang Xiu) often suffered from acute diarrhea, which imperial physicians could not cure. His wife said, "There is a medicine sold in the market for three wen per patch, very effective." The Gong said, "We scholars are reluctant to pass on prescriptions, but after a long time, we were willing to transmit it. Simply use Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) alone, ground into powder, taken with rice drink, 2 qian bi per dose. He said this medicine: promotes water passage without disturbing Qi. When water passage is promoted, clear and turbid separate, and the grain-storage organs (stomach/intestines) naturally stop [diarrhea]."
Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen) is hollowed out to form a jar-like shape. Insert a small amount of Tongming Ruxiang (Boswelliae Resina, transparent frankincense) inside, then fill the rest with powder. If not fully filled, wrap it with a little dough and roast the Doukou until cooked, turning scorched yellow.
The prescription for treating dysentery and abdominal pain given by Emperor Xianzong to Ma Zong.
Use Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, ginger with skin), chopped finely like millet grains. Use one large zhan of water, combined with Caocha (grass tea), decoct together and take. In the second year of Yuanyou, Wenzhonggong contracted this illness, and hundreds of medicines were ineffective. I transmitted this prescription, and he recovered.
