[Jinshi San (Appetite-Stimulating Powder)]
Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel) (both with the pith removed, 1 fen each), Caodoukou (Cardamom Seed), Gao Liangjiang (Galangal Rhizome) (thin slices).
Cao Dou Kou (3 seeds), Gancao (Licorice Root) (1 fen, honey-fried), Hezi (Chebula Fruit) (5 seeds, pitted and roasted).
For administration: Take 1 qian of the above herbs, add 1 zhong zhan of water and 2 slices of fresh ginger. Decoct until approximately 70% of the liquid remains. Administer on an empty stomach. This formula originates from "Lu Zhou Li Qian Fang". It treats deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach leading to poor appetite. It is also indicated for cases where prolonged illness has led to Spleen Qi deficiency, resulting in a complete inability to eat; one or two doses are sufficient to rapidly restore appetite. Li Qian was a renowned physician, whom I witnessed practicing in Zhenzhou. He treated the daughter of Official Jia, who had been ill for over fifty days, suffering from severe Spleen disease with frequent vomiting and total anorexia. Other physicians' treatments were ineffective. Upon administering this single dose by Li Qian, the patient consumed half a steamed cake; by the next day, she desired various foods. Li Qian stated that this medicine stimulates appetite with extreme speed. I suspected the formula was too heating, but Li Qian disagreed, noting he had used it for thirty years without failure.
[Yaqi San (Qi-Suppressing Powder)]
Indications: Stops counterflow and calms wheezing; treats conditions following excessive purging/drainage where Qi deficiency causes rebellious Qi rushing upward to the chest and diaphragm.
Muxiang (Costus Root), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Baifuling (Poria), Huoxiang (Patchouli Herb), Zhike (Bitter Orange Fruit), Chenjupi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Gancao (Licorice Root) (honey-fried, all equal parts), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) (processed, half a piece).
For administration: Take 1 da qian of the powder. Decoct with Zisu (Perilla Leaf), Mugua (Chaenomeles Fruit), and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). Transfer to a silver cup and heat via double-boiling method for five to seven boils. Consume orally in one go.
[Hezi Wan (Chebula Pill)]
Indications: Promotes digestion and resolves Qi stagnation.
Hezipi (Chebula Pericarp) (2 liang, washed and processed), Muxiang (Costus Root), Baidoukou (White Cardamom Seed), Binglang (Areca Seed), Gui (Cinnamon Twig), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Jiangjiang (Dried Ginger), Fuling (Poria) (all 2 liang each), Qianniuzi (Pharbitis Seed).
For administration: Decoct in wine, mix with wheat flour paste to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Each dose consists of 15 to 20 pills. If Qi disorders flare up or if excessive eating leads to epigastric fullness and oppression, chew the pill thoroughly and swallow with tea or wine. When Lu Zilü, Academician and Magistrate of Pingxing County in Caizhou, was attending to Shi Pu during his demotion southward, Lu was extremely diligent. Shi Pu felt deeply grateful. Shortly after, Shi Pu was recalled to court and visited Lu at Pingxing. To repay Lu's kindness during the southern journey, Shi Pu transmitted this formula, stating that he often suffered from distension and oppression due to excessive eating, which resolved immediately upon taking this medicine. I obtained this formula from Lu Zilü and keep it prepared at home. For symptoms of postprandial fullness and Qi distension in the chest and diaphragm, a single dose provides relief as if pressed down by a hand, proving highly effective.
