Treats deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach. Long-standing illness leading to loss of appetite, or manifesting as edema (swelling), or progressive emaciation (wasting away), with fatigue and weakness in the four limbs, and unregulated vomiting and diarrhea. All conditions presenting with signs of Spleen deficiency are suitable for this prescription.
Han Jiao (Sichuan Pepper, remove the seeds) Nong Po (Magnolia Bark, remove the rough bark and slice) Huixiang (Fennel) Qing Yan (Green Salt, wash to remove sand and soil, take the floating part).
Each ingredient two liang. Boil in two sheng of water until dry, bake until crisp, grind into powder, and make pills using flour paste, sized like wutong tree seeds. Take thirty to forty pills per dose. Administer on an empty stomach with rice water or salted water decoction. For deep-seated diseases, take three times a day. My cousin, Mr. Xu, suffered from a Spleen disease for over a year, presenting with generalized yellowish edema, inability to rise from bed, and complete anorexia. His nephew, who served as the Transport Commissioner of the circuit, dispatched excellent physicians daily, but none were effective. Master Fu, a Sub-prefect, transmitted this formula. After taking it for about ten days, he gradually improved. Since then, he has taken it regularly; his muscles became plump and robust, he developed a taste for rich food, and his complexion became ruddy, surpassing others. In his sixties, he could walk dozens of li daily, possessing strength comparable to a youth. Jiao Po Wan (Pepper and Magnolia Pill) is repeatedly recorded in *Boji Fang* and various other collections. Some versions add Fuzi (Aconite Root) or Ginger species, but these are not as rapid or effective. This formula captures the essence and matches the pathology perfectly, acting miraculously; do not add other herbs. The key to the medication matching the disease is often unrecognized by people. Merely looking at the surface ingredients reveals its miraculous efficacy. Often, adding extra herbs leads to ineffectiveness, which cannot be guessed by mere speculation.
Mr. Liu, a recluse in Huzhou, had an uncle suffering from wheezing (asthma). His hands and feet were swollen, almost unable to move. Mr. Liu dreamed that someone said to him: "Your uncle suffers from Spleen disease; pathogenic factors have spread horizontally to the four limbs, it is nothing else. You possess hidden virtue, and I can cure your uncle's illness." He hand-wrote the formula and taught it to him, calling it Wu Ai Wan (Unimpeded Pill). He sincerely added: "Do not take any other medicines." Mr. Liu obtained the formula and administered it to his uncle. After three doses, the illness subsided. Mr. Liu had previously invited a physician from Qiantang. Several days later, the physician arrived and said, this...
