Gao Liang Jiang (Rhizoma Alpiniae Officinarum, sliced and stir-fried until fragrant and cooked), Cao Dou Kou (Fructus Cardamomi, shelled and stir-fried), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Sha Ren (Fructus Amomi Rotundus), Nong Po (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, coarse bark removed, sliced; above ingredients each one liang), Qing Ju Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride, pulp removed, stir-fried until yellow), He Zi Rou (Semen Terminaliae Chebulae, half a liang each), Rou Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi, one fen), Sheng Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, one liang, sliced), Zao Rou (Sarcocarpus Jujubae, one liang, sliced). The latter two ingredients are combined with Nong Po, all ground into fine powder. Each dose is two qian, mixed with a little salt, and prepared by pouring boiling water over it. Taken on an empty stomach. This medicine is particularly effective for treating abdominal pain. Lord Lü from Tiantai had long suffered from abdominal pain. When the illness flared up, he would faint and remain unwell for days. A Daoist priest administered this powder to him, and after one dose, the condition stabilized. Since then, whenever it flared up, he drank several doses, and the pain vanished as if lost. I obtained this prescription and repeatedly administered it to others, without fail showing miraculous efficacy. It is especially wonderful for treating cold diarrhea, which is the hardest type of abdominal pain to treat medicinally. This formula merely warms the Spleen (Zang organ responsible for transformation and transportation), but its specific analgesic effect is remarkable, though the underlying mechanism remains unknown.
It treats Spleen-Stomach Deficiency Diarrhea (Loose stools due to deficiency of Spleen and Stomach Qi), and is particularly effective for visceral diarrhea in the elderly.
Wu Tou (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, processed, three fen), Nong Po (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, stir-fried with ginger juice), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, honey-fried), Gan Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Secatum, processed, each one fen).
Take one qian, add three he of water and two slices of Sheng Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), decoct until two he remain. Take hot. Two doses should stop the symptoms. My family once stored this medicine, and it proved extremely effective for treating Spleen Deficiency Diarrhea (Diarrhea caused by Spleen Qi deficiency).
Treating chronic Spleen Deficiency Diarrhea (from "Bo Ji Fang"):
Sheng Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, four liang), Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis, one liang).
Crush both into pieces the size of beans, and slowly stir-fry together over low heat. Stir-fry until the ginger becomes dry, crisp, and dark red. Remove the ginger, retain the Huang Lian, grind it into fine powder. Take one qian. On an empty stomach, swallow with clear brewed tea from the twelfth lunar month (La Cha). Recovery will occur within no more than two doses.
Treating all types of stagnant Qi (Stagnation of Qi flow):
Zhu Sha (Mineral Cinnabar, crushed), An Xi Xiang (Resina Benzoin, ground), She Xiang (Moschus, ground, each one fen), Bai Jie Zi (Semen Sinapis Albae, 360 grains, stir-fried), Da Ji Radix Euphorbiae Humifusa, powder, one qian bi), Mo Yao (Resina Myrrhae, one qian, ground and added), Niu Huang (Calculus Bovis, five fen, ground and added), Qian Niu Semen Pharbitidis, powder, one qian bi), Wu Ling Zhi (Faeces Trogopterori, one qian, ground and added), Ru Xiang (Resina Frankincense, one qian, ground and added), Ban Mao (Mylabris, twenty-seven insects, heads, wings, and feet removed, ground and added), Ba Dou (Semen Crotonis, twenty-seven seeds, husks removed, ground to extract oil; if oil is not fully extracted, it aids speed of action).
All the above ingredients are ground uniformly. Use red rice porridge to form pills the size of sesame seeds. Administer with warm water when needed.
Pan from the Imperial Medical Academy always kept this medicine in his pouch. In sudden emergencies, it was frequently used.
