Treats infantile acute and chronic convulsive disorders (Jing Feng).
Nifen (Calomelas, 1.5 qian), Heitu (Black Soil), Baifan (White Flour), Lushen (Aloe, roasted, 1 qian), Shexiang (Musk), Longnao (Borneol), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), Shijunzi (Quisqualis Fruit, shelled and wrapped in dough).
The above ingredients are processed with paste to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Each dose is half a pill, ground and taken down with Bohe Tang (Peppermint Decoction); if purgation is desired, take one full pill. This prescription comes from Wang Jian, a pediatrician in Chuzhou (as recorded in *Xiao'er Yi*).
He accumulated considerable wealth by selling this medicine. Wang Jian regarded this method as miraculous and never passed it on to others. I obtained this formula and found it to be essentially the common household "Sleep Convulsion Pill" (Shuijing Wan), differing only slightly in dosage. It is extremely effective for treating convulsions; having used it before and after, I observed that a dying infant recovered after just one dose.
Additionally, observe the upper and lower eyelids of the infant, as well as the center of the mouth/lips. If there are white spots the size of a red bean, this is a sign that the disease is about to manifest. Immediately use your fingernails to pinch/scratch directly at the center. Pinch from the outside inward to sever the meridian connection; slight bleeding is acceptable. Also pinch the two ends of the white spot in the same manner to sever the internal and external connections, merely severing the qi and blood flow without breaking the flesh. Do not keep fingernails too long, lest you severely injure the child. When I served as the Inspector of Hebei and arrived at Zhaojun, an elderly man offered me this method. He said he was old and cherished this method which was about to be lost, wishing to use it to benefit people. The people of Zhao told me that this old man had personally saved over a thousand children in his lifetime, and his treatments were always successful.
Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, 3 fen, ground), Xionghuang (Realgar, ground), Huhuanglian (Picrorhiza Rhizome, 2 fen each), Zhusha (Cinnabar, ground), Nifen (Calomelas), Xiongdan (Ursus Bile, dissolved in warm water), Baifuzi (Aconitum Carleilii Radix Preparata, 1 fen each), Lushen (Aloe, ground, 1 fen each), Shexiang (Musk, 0.5 fen, ground), Chansu (Toad Venom), Shuiyin (Mercurius, each the size of a Quisqualis seed), Qianshuang (Plumbum Subacetatum), Longnao (Borneol, each one character weight).
All ingredients are placed together in a mortar and ground repeatedly until uniform. Take one pig gallbladder, extract the juice, boil it, and soak a small amount of steamed wheat dough to form pills the size of yellow millet grains. Dry them in the sun. A one-year-old infant may take two pills, increasing the dose according to the child's size. For convulsions and various epilepsy syndromes, first dissolve one pill in warm water and drip it into the nose to induce sneezing; eyes rolling upward should return to normal, and spasms will subside. Then administer with Bohe Tang (Peppermint Decoction). For various Gan syndromes (chronic malnutrition/digestive disorders), administer with congee drink. For fever and chills during the "bianzheng" (physiological developmental fevers), dissolve with Bohe Tang (Peppermint Decoction). For various diarrhea and dysentery, administer with rice water. For Gan syndrome with roundworms causing heart pain, administer with decoction of Koushenzi (Toosendan Fruit). For redness and ulceration under the nose, oral ulcers caused by Gan worms, etc., grind with breast milk and apply topically. For Gan eye diseases and night blindness (Que Mu), take one lamb liver, slice it open with bamboo, insert the medicine into the liver. Tie it with hemp thread, boil in rice washing water until cooked, and take on an empty stomach. The nursing mother must avoid toxic fish, garlic, chicken, duck, pork, and other meats. This pill is excellent for treating various pediatric Gan syndromes. I have personally seen infants suffering from severe Gan syndrome who were emaciated and barely breathing; after taking this medicine, they sometimes expelled several units of worms and recovered immediately. Infants who were previously healthy and robust seemed almost reborn.
