Da Zhu Dan Zhi Dao Fa (Large Pig Gallbladder Juice Suppository Method), Bai Tong Jia Zhu Dan Zhi Tang (Baitong Decoction with Pig Gallbladder Juice), Si Ni Jia Zhu Dan Zhi Tang (Sini Decoction with Pig Gallbladder Juice).
The above three formulas.
Zhang Zhongjing's use of pig gallbladder is found only in these three formulas, all employing its juice, which refers to fresh pig bile. It is not used as a juice made from dried material. In our country [Japan], pigs are not raised, so there is no Da Tan San (Hydratis Liver Powder).
The above one formula.
Tan refers to the otter.
Si Ni Jia Zhu Dan Zhi Tang (Sini Decoction with Pig Gallbladder Juice).
Regarding the above formula, the post-formula note states: If pig gallbladder is unavailable, substitute with sheep gallbladder.
Dang Gui Sheng Jiang Yang Rou Tang (Danggui, Fresh Ginger, and Mutton Decoction).
The above one formula.
Zhi Zhu San (Spider Powder).
The above one formula.
Luo Yuan stated: Spiders weave webs at the four corners of eaves, shaped like fishing nets, positioning themselves in the center. When flying insects touch the web, they kick the web with their legs, preventing escape; this is that kind of spider. Other spiders are not used in medicine.
Da Chong Wan (Great Worm Pill).
The above one formula.
Xing Bing stated: Those living in manure and soil are named Qi Lao (larvae of scarab beetles). Chen Cangqi stated: Qi Lao have short bodies and long legs, with hairy segments on their backs; in autumn, they transform into cicadas, which is correct.
Hua Shi Bai Yu San (Talcum, White Fish, and Powder Formula).
The above one formula.
Dongdong Weng stated: Bai Yu (White Fish) is the white carp. Li Shizhen cited Liu Gan saying: Bai Yu lives in rivers and lakes, has a white color and holds its head high; the large ones are six or seven chi long.
According to "Records of the Grand Historian: Annals of Zhou": The white fish leaping into the King's boat refers to this creature.
"Da Guan Ben Cao" (Comprehensive Materia Medica of the Daguan Era) states: Bai Yu is sweet, neutral, non-toxic, and mainly treats water retention. The large ones are six or seven chi long, white in color with heads held high, living in rivers and lakes. This is the view of Ma Zhi of the Song Dynasty in "Kai Bao Ben Cao" (Comprehensive Materia Medica of the Kai Bao Era). However, the name "Bai Yu" originates from the "Annals of Zhou," having a long history. "Guang Yun" notes: The character [phonetic component] is pronounced Ju Yao Qie; "Ji Yun" notes Ju Yao Qie, pronounced Jiao, an alias for Bai Yu. Li Shizhen explained the name: The character [phonetic component] is pronounced Qiao; "Bai" can also be written as "Ba"; "Bai" refers to color, and "Yu" refers to the head and tail pointing upward. "Ba" is pronounced Bai according to "Tang Yun." "Bo Ya" states: Ba is Bai Yu. Character dictionaries interpret it as Bai Yu. In "Shuo Yuan," the fish from Yangqiao mentioned by Mi Zijian uses the character "Qiao" (bridge); "Shuo Yuan" and "Erya Yi" etc., all write it as the bridge character. Why do some texts change "Qiao" to a character with the fish radical? Yangqiao was originally a place name in Lu. Since the pronunciation is Qiao, is the fish named after the waters of Yangqiao? It is unknown which is correct. Neither "Shuowen Jiezi" nor "Yunhui" contains this character. "Yupian" states: The character [phonetic component] is pronounced Qi Zhao Qie, meaning Bai Yu. Character dictionaries likely derived this interpretation from "Yupian" regarding the Yangqiao fish? If based on the words of Yang Zhou in "Shuo Yuan," then is this Bai Yu a fish that is thin-fleshed and not delicious? From this perspective, the name Bai Yu originated from the "Annals of Zhou." Did the white fish leaping into the royal boat refer to the Bai Yu in the silk books? Li Shizhen said: It has a narrow shape, flat belly, fine scales, and both head and tail point upward; there are fine spines in the meat. The white fish entering the boat during King Wu's time refers to this. In the rivers of my domain (Hizen), there is such a creature, roughly resembling a carp, called Bai Li Yu (White Carp). Its taste is bland and not very good. It can promote urination and reduce swelling, and its use is effective. Fishermen catch and discard it; it is not a type of carp. I suspect this creature is indeed the true Bai Yu. I await future trials to verify its efficacy.
