Lindera Root (Wuyao): The nature is warm, and the flavor is pungent. Its qi is strong while its flavor is light; it enters the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian and the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. It can eliminate various cold pathogens and regulate Dan Qi (referring to the fire of the lower jiao or ministerial fire). It stops regurgitation and reduces urination. It wards off epidemics, miasma, and seasonal infectious diseases, and resolves gu poison and sudden stroke. Assisted by Cyperi Rhizome (Xiangfu), it can treat various qi stagnation syndromes in women; as the sovereign herb combined with Pingwei Powder, it can resolve various types of food accumulation in both men and women. When used with wind-dispelling herbs, it can disperse wind; when used for distension and fullness, it can direct qi downward; when used for qi obstruction, it can unblock stagnation; when used for abdominal pain, it can relieve pain. It also primarily treats cold qi attacking and rushing from between the kidneys, thus making it a herb for the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. However, this formula lacks nourishing properties and should not be taken in large amounts; it is used only for its pungent and dispersing action to resolve stagnation. Decocted with tofu and cooked with Sulfur (Liuhuang), it treats wind diseases of the hands and feet.
Barley (Damai): The nature is neutral, the flavor is sour and astringent, with hints of sweet and pungent, and it is non-toxic. It promotes phlegm resolution and digestion, directs accumulated qi downward, and dissipates stagnant blood. It treats hernia and stops abdominal pain. It specializes in treating meat accumulation, can open the spleen and strengthen the stomach. It can also treat postpartum "child pillow" pain in women; decocted strongly with a small amount of Sugar (Shatang), it produces immediate results. When used to regulate the spleen, abdominal distension disappears immediately. I once used Lindera Root soaked and sun-dried in a decoction of Pingwei Powder and Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha) to treat various types of qi pain and abdominal pain. Pediatricians using it for smallpox can promote qi movement and resolve phlegm, helping the rash to erupt and detoxify. It can also break the stagnant qi of Ginseng Radix (Renshen); when pediatricians are forced to use Ginseng, they often use this herb to monitor and mitigate its side effects.
The nature is neutral, the flavor is sweet and warm, and it is non-toxic. It assists the True Qi of Heaven and Earth, travels through the Yangming Stomach Meridian. It directs qi downward and regulates the middle jiao, stops diarrhea, and opens the appetite. It eliminates retained food, strengthens the spleen and stomach, and promotes food intake. It directs stagnant qi downward, breaks masses, and drives out accumulated phlegm. It treats restless fetus in women and hard, full chest and abdomen in children. Unprocessed, its nature is warm entering the stomach, capable of eliminating retained food. Lightly stir-fried, its nature becomes cool entering the Large Intestine, capable of removing deep-seated accumulation. Made into paste pills for phlegm remedies, it treats various phlegm-qii conditions with miraculous effect. Made into paste pills for cough remedies, it manages various coughs excellently. Why? Because both phlegm and cough are caused by qi moving upward in rebellion. Now, using this agent as an assistant or guide, the qi becomes smooth, and the fluids of the spleen and stomach [are distributed properly].
The nature is warm, the flavor is salty and sweet. This agent substitutes for Wu-Ji Earth (referring to the Spleen and Stomach), serving as the key to rotting and ripening water and grain. For those with qi deficiency, taking the powder orally greatly tonifies primal qi. Since the five grains inherit the generating qi of heaven and earth to nourish humans, and wheat (Mai) specifically contains the mechanism of generation before it is fully revealed, taking its powder allows one to borrow the generating qi of the five grains to assist in nurturing our human primal qi. This agent can move stagnant blood in the upper jiao and remove borborygmus (rumbling) in the abdomen. Due to its sweetness, it can [text cuts off]
