目昧不明者,热气郁之甚也。
暴注者、卒泻也。
螈者、惕跳动也。火主动、况脉乃心火之所养也。
暴病暴死者,火性急速故也。
Various spasms and stiffness, accumulation of retained fluids causing chest and diaphragm obstruction, abdominal fullness, cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea, heavy body with edema, muscles soft like mud that do not rebound upon pressure, all belong to Dampness (Shi).
Taiyin Damp Earth corresponds to the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach.
Spasms and stiffness refer to sinews being rigid and lacking flexibility. Yin spasm is called Rigid Spasm (Rou Jing), while Yang spasm is called Stiff Spasm (Gang Jing). Therefore, when Dampness reaches an extreme, it may seemingly combine with Wind to restrain itself; however, this combined transformation is a false image, and is not actually Wind.
Accumulated fluid refers to retained fluids gathering and failing to dissipate.
Pi (Glomus/Obstruction) refers to Qi blockage and lack of smooth flow. When Earth encounters dryness, it dissipates; when it encounters dampness, it fails to digest and transform, leading to disease.
Ge (Diaphragmatic Obstruction) refers to blockage. The intestines and stomach are isolated from each other, causing their transmission and transformation functions to lose their normal rhythm.
Zhongman (Central Fullness) refers to Earth residing in the central region of the body; due to Dampness accumulating as retained fluid and causing Pi and Ge obstructions, abdominal fullness results.
Cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea occur because Dampness becomes retained fluid and causes Pi and Ge obstructions, leading to abnormal transmission and transformation.
Heavy body occurs because when Earth is diseased by Dampness, the body feels heavy.
Edema, where muscles are soft like mud and do not rebound after pressure, occurs because excessive Dampness in Earth turns it into mud, hence the lack of rebound.
Various fevers, mental confusion (Mao), convulsions (Yuan), sudden aphonia, dizziness and clouded consciousness, restlessness and agitation, manic behavior exceeding propriety, cursing, fright and terror, swelling and soreness, rebellious Qi rushing upward, trembling and shivering as if losing one's spirit, sneezing, vomiting, sores and ulcers, throat bi (obstruction), tinnitus and deafness, violent vomiting and overflow, inability to eat, blurred vision, acute diarrhea, convulsions, sudden illness, and sudden death, all belong to Fire (Huo). The heat of Shaoyang Ministerial Fire corresponds to the Qi of the Pericardium Collateral and Sanjiao (Triple Burner).
Mao refers to confusion. When Heart Fire is excessively hot, the Spirit becomes turbid and confused, resulting in Mao.
Yuan (Convulsion) refers to movement. Startled jumping and convulsions are manifestations of Fire. Fright belongs to the Heart, and the pulse is also governed by the Heart.
Bao Yin (Sudden Aphonia) refers to sudden loss of voice. The Lung governs sound. If Fire is excessive and Water is deficient, Heat invades Lung Metal, resulting in aphonia without voice. The Classics state: "Internal depletion and reversal lead to aphonia and paralysis," which indicates Kidney deficiency. Pai refers to uselessness or paralysis.
Maomei refers to being clouded and dim. Hot Qi and turbid Spirit are manifestations of Fire.
Zaorao refers to restless agitation and feverish discomfort, disturbing and preventing tranquility. When Heat is severe externally, limbs become restless; when Heat is severe internally, the Spirit becomes agitated. Recurrent mania, inner vexation and regret, and insomnia result.
Kuang (Mania) refers to chaotic and unstable behavior. Yue refers to violating etiquette and laws, acting abnormally. Kidney Water governs Will (Zhi); when Heart Fire is vigorous, Kidney Water declines, leading to loss of will and manic excess. The Classics state: "Excessive joy leads to Dian (epilepsy/mania), excessive anger leads to Kuang (mania)." Joy is the emotion of the Heart; excessive Heart Heat leads to excessive joy and Dian. Anger is the emotion of the Liver; when Fire is substantial and controls Metal, it cannot pacify Wood, so Liver Excess leads to excessive anger and Kuang.
Mali (Cursing) refers to foul speech. Water nature is good, Fire nature is evil. If Yang is excessive and Yin is deficient, Water is weak and Fire is strong, leading to cursing.
Jinghai refers to shock and terror. It is governed by Sovereign Fire.
Swelling occurs because Heat overcomes flesh and Yang Qi is stagnant. This differs from swelling in the Dampness category.
Soreness and pain occur because Fire excess controls Metal, failing to pacify Liver Wood; Wood becomes vigorous and is transformed by Fire. Rebellious Qi rushing upward is due to the flaming-upward nature of Fire.
Jinli ru sang shen shou: Jin refers to cold; Li refers to trembling/shivering.
Ti (Sneezing) refers to air bursting out making sound due to nasal itching. The nose is the orifice of the Lung; itching is caused by Fire transformation.
Vomiting, sores, and ulcers are all caused by Fire. These should be read together with the Fire category.
Hou Bi (Throat Obstruction) refers to numbness and insensibility. It is caused by Fire blockage. Fire governs swelling; when Heat lodges in the Upper Jiao, the throat swells and obstructs.
Tinnitus occurs because the ear is the orifice of the Kidney, intersecting with the Hand Taiyang, Hand Shaoyang, Foot Jueyin, and Foot Shaoyang meridians. If Water is deficient and Fire is substantial, rising Heat attacks these meridians, strikes the ear, vibrates the auditory aperture, and produces ringing according to the intensity of the Qi.
Deafness occurs because Water is deficient and Fire is substantial, with Heat stagnating upwards, blocking the xuanfu (pores/orifices) of the auditory aperture, preventing the Spirit Qi from circulating and draining.
Violent vomiting and overflow, inability to eat, occur because Fire Qi flares upward, causing severe Heat in the Stomach and Diaphragm, leading to abnormal transmission and transformation.
Blurred vision occurs because Heat Qi is severely stagnant.
Baozhu refers to sudden diarrhea.
Yuan refers to startled jumping and convulsions. Fire governs movement; moreover, the pulse is nourished by Heart Fire.
Sudden illness and sudden death occur because the nature of Fire is rapid and urgent.
