Indicated for deficiency of primal yang, or congenital constitution weakness, or excessive labor injury, leading to decline of the fire of the Gate of Vitality (Mingmen), inability to warm and transform Spleen Earth, resulting in Spleen deficiency with poor appetite. Or vomiting and nausea, abdominal distension, regurgitation and dysphagia, aversion to cold and fear of cold, frequent pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, loose stools with frequent diarrhea and dysentery, spontaneous urination, deficiency strangury and cold hernia, cold invading the muscle spaces causing bi-syndrome pain in limbs and joints, or cold in the Lower Jiao causing edema due to water retention. In summary, those with deficiency of true yang must exhibit mental fatigue and qi timidity, palpitations and restlessness, flaccidity of the four limbs, visual hallucinations, infertility due to yang decline, and other such symptoms. All should promptly adopt the method of benefiting the source of fire to nourish the primal yang of the right Kidney, thereby strengthening the spirit and qi; this formula is indicated for these conditions.
Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Ba Ji Liang), Yam Rhizome (Si Liang, stir-fried), Cornus Officinalis Fruit (Si Liang, slightly stir-fried), Deer Antler Glue (Si Liang, stir-fried into beads), Lycium Berry (Si Liang, gradually increaseable to Si Liang), Prepared Aconite Lateralis Radix (from Er Liang gradually increaseable to Wu Liu Liang).
Process the above into pills as described previously, or form them into pills the size of a bullet. Chew two or three pills each time and swallow with boiling plain water; the effect will be particularly rapid.
If yang is declined and qi is deficient, Ginseng Root must be added as the principal herb, in a dosage of Er San Liang or Wu Liu Liang, increased or decreased according to the patient's deficiency or excess. This is because Ginseng Root enters the Yang aspect when taken with yang-tonifying herbs, and the Yin aspect when taken with yin-nourishing herbs; to rapidly benefit the yang of the Gate of Vitality, no herb can achieve swift efficacy like Ginseng Root. If there is seminal emission due to yang deficiency and insecurity of the essence, or leukorrhea with turbidity and loose stools, add Alcohol-processed Psoralea Fructus (San Liang). If stool contains undigested food (Sun-xie) or renal diarrhea persists without cessation, add Schisandrae Fructus (San Liang) and Myristica Seed (San Liang, stir-fried with flour and oil removed). If food intake decreases, digestion is difficult, or vomiting, nausea, and acid regurgitation occur, these are all symptoms of Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold; add Dried Ginger (San Si Liang, stir-fried until yellow). If abdominal pain persists without stopping, add Evodiae Fructus (Er Liang, soaked in water for half a day then stir-fried). If lower back and knee soreness and pain occur, add Walnut Kernel with skin (Si Liang). If impotence occurs due to yin deficiency, add Morinda Officinalis Root Bark (Si Liang) and Cistanche Stem (San Liang), or add one or two pairs of Yellow Dog Testis, boiled in wine until soft and mashed into the mixture.
