状如
Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis): Flavor is sweet. Nature is neutral. Non-toxic. It inherits the vigorous Yang Qi of the earth's center, and simultaneously absorbs the harmonious Qi of spring to grow. Its action descends. It is Yin containing Yang. Lu Ying (Euphorbia humifusa) serves as the guiding herb. It is incompatible with Ning Shui Shi (Alumen) and Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus). It fears Lei Wan (Wolffiae Spores) and Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus).
[Indications] Primarily tonifies the Five Zang Organs. Treats deficiency-wasting syndrome with emaciation. Strengthens Yin and benefits Essence. (From *Shennong Bencao Jing*). Harmonizes Stomach Qi. Drains pathogenic heat and fei qi (prickly heat) from the skin. Treats pain, coldness, bi-syndrome (impediment syndrome), and weakness in the feet and knees, as well as spontaneous sweating during fever.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Stomach and Kidney meridians. Also enters the Heart and Spleen meridians. It is a substance that clears heat and nourishes Yin. (Clears damp-heat from the Spleen and Stomach, tonifies the four meridians).
[Preceding Discussions] Kou Zongshi stated: Shihu has merit in treating deficient heat in the Stomach. Li Shizhen stated: This is a herb for the Spleen and the Right Kidney. *Shen Shi Fang* states: It treats scrotal dampness and scanty essence.
[Processing] Lei Gong stated: Remove the root head. Soak in wine overnight. Mix with butter (Su) and steam for half a day. Dry-roast before use. It is effective only when used in tonifying prescriptions.
Gusuibu (Drynariae Rhizoma): Flavor is bitter. Nature is warm. Non-toxic. It obtains Metal Qi, and simultaneously obtains Stone Qi to grow. Also known as Hou Jiang.
[Indications] Primarily breaks blood stasis and stops bleeding. Tonifies fracture injuries. (From *Shennong Bencao Jing*). Treats toxic gas in bones. Treats wind-blood pain. Wu Lao Liu Ji (Five Exhaustions and Six Extremes, referring to various chronic deficiency syndromes). Inability to control hands and feet. Upper heat conditions are thus treated.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Kidney meridian. It is a tonifying substance. (Enters Kidney to govern bones, enters Blood to treat trauma, a herb for women's Qi and Blood disorders).
[Preceding Discussions] Yuan Li stated: I once used this herb powder stuffed into pig kidneys, roasted until cooked. It immediately stops chronic diarrhea. This is because the Kidney governs urination and defecation; chronic diarrhea belongs to Kidney deficiency.
[Contraindications] *Bencao Jingshu* stated: Not suitable to be used together with wind-drying herbs.
[Processing] Lei Gong stated: Scrape off the yellow hairs with a copper knife. Cut finely. Mix with honey and steam for one day. Sun-dry before use. If urgent use is required without steaming, drying by roasting is also acceptable.
Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix): Flavor is bitter and acrid. Nature is slightly warm. Non-toxic. It obtains Earth and Metal Qi, and simultaneously inherits Heaven's Yang Qi to grow. Its action can ascend and descend. It is Yang. It is incompatible with Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix). It fears Lei Wan (Wolffiae Spores).
[Indications] Primarily treats internal injury. Tonifies insufficiency. Treats metal wounds (Jin Chuang). Treats carbuncles and sores. Continues broken bones and tendons after fractures and falls. Treats difficult lactation in women. Long-term consumption boosts Qi and strength. (From *Shennong Bencao Jing*). Promotes circulation in women. Used before childbirth.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Liver and Kidney meridians. It is a substance specifically beneficial to sinews and bones. (Essential herb for waist and kidney, treats obstetrics and gynecology, continues severed injuries).
[Preceding Discussions] Zhong Chun (Zhang Jiebin) stated: To promote blood circulation and manage trauma, it should be used together with Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), and Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizoma). To stop bleeding, treat metrorrhagia (Beng Zhong), and tonify insufficiency, then...
[Contraindications] *Bencao Jingshu* stated: Contraindicated with bitter-cold herbs for treating blood diseases. And contraindicated with major acrid-hot herbs for use before childbirth.
[Processing] Lei Gong stated: Take the root, cut horizontally. Remove the hard fibers inside. Soak in wine for one Fu period (approx. two hours). Dry-roast before use. *Bencao Beiyao* states: Those produced in Sichuan are superior. The shape resembles...
