This refers to the currently used Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, Fresh). It tastes sweet and bitter, is cold in nature, and is non-toxic. It inherits the qi of Mid-Winter (the 11th lunar month) and combines with the harmonious qi of the earth to grow. Its action is descending, belonging to Yin containing Yang. It pairs well with Qing Jiu (Clear Wine) and Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix). It is incompatible with Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus). It fears Lifu (Raphani Fructus) and Wuyi (Archangelys Herba).
[Indications] Primarily treats internal injury and deficiency, expels blood bi (obstruction), fills the bone marrow, promotes muscle growth. Decoction removes cold-heat accumulations, dispels bi syndrome, and treats fractures and dislocations with tendon rupture. The fresh form is particularly effective. It also treats retained food, tonifies blood, manages women's metrorrhagia (heavy uterine bleeding), and palm heat and pain associated with Spleen disorders.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Heart, Liver, Kidney, Pericardium, and Small Intestine meridians. It is a substance for nourishing Yin and cooling blood. (A key herb for tonifying the Kidney).
It tastes sweet and slightly bitter, is mildly warm in nature, and is non-toxic. Its action is descending, belonging to Yin containing Yang. It is contraindicated with Lifu (Raphani Fructus), Congbai (Allii Cepae Bulbus), Suan (Allii Sativi Bulbus), and various animal bloods. It pairs well with Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Danpi (Moutan Cortex). It harmonizes blood and stops bleeding, nourishes Yin and tonifies marrow.
[Indications] Primarily tonifies internal insufficiency of the Five Zang organs, unblocks blood vessels, fills bone marrow, benefits hearing and vision, darkens beard and hair, generates essence and nourishes blood. Treats men's five labors and seven injuries (chronic exhaustion syndromes), and symptoms such as restlessness when sitting or lying down.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Heart, Liver, and Kidney meridians. It is a substance for nourishing Yin and blood. (The superior agent for tonifying blood; nourishes Kidney water, supplements true Yin, fills bone marrow, and generates essence and blood).
This refers to the currently available fresh Sheng Di Huang. It tastes sweet, is greatly cold in nature, and is non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats women's metrorrhagia with continuous bleeding, postpartum blood rushing to the heart causing suffocation and bodily injury, fetal movement with lower bleeding, retained placenta, and injuries from falls or fractures.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Heart, Liver, and Kidney meridians. It is a substance for clearing fire and cooling blood.
[Previous Discussions] Lei Gong stated: Sheng Di Huang is used immediately after harvesting; Gan Di Huang (Dried Rehmannia Root) is sun-dried and stored; Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) is processed by specific methods. Li Dongyuan (Hai Zang) stated: For hematuria, steam nine times. For fire syndromes, it tonifies the Kidney.
Wang Shuo stated: Men often have Yin deficiency and should use Shu Di Huang. In its place of origin, Shu Di Huang can tonify essence and blood, with Maidong acting as a guiding herb.
[Contraindications] *Bencao Jing Shu* states: Patients with weak Spleen and Stomach, loose stools, those who cannot eat or have diarrhea postpartum, and those with much phlegm in the chest and diaphragm or obstructed airways are all contraindicated.
[Processing] Yu Tun stated: Sheng Di Huang generates blood, but may hinder digestion in those with weak Stomach Qi; Shu Di Huang tonifies blood, but may clog the diaphragm in those with much phlegm-fluids. Some say Sheng Di Huang is stir-fried with wine or mixed with Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus).
