[Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus)]
Taste: Bitter, acrid. Nature: Neutral. Non-toxic. It absorbs the qi of coolness and derives its nature from Metal and Water. It ascends; it is Yang. Another view holds that it is Yang within Yin.
[Indications] Primarily treats heat accumulation and carbuncles/sores. (Shen Nong's Classic) Eliminates white worms. (Ben Cao Jing Jiu Yi) Promotes urination in cases of five types of stranguria (Wu Lin) and urinary obstruction. Clears "guest heat" from the Heart. (Zhen Quan) Clears Heart Fire.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Gallbladder, Large Intestine, and Sanjiao (Triple Burner) meridians. Also enters the Heart and Pericardium meridians. It is a substance for dissipating nodules and clearing fire. (Category: Dispersing Agent)
[Preliminary Discussion] Zhang Yuansu stated that Lianqiao has three uses: 1. Purging guest heat from the Heart Meridian; 2. Removing various heats from the Upper Jiao; 3. Serving as the holy medicine for treating sores and ulcers.
Commentary by Ao: Human Qi and Blood must flow freely. If Blood stasis obstructs and Qi stagnation suppresses, swelling and sores form. Lianqiao can dissipate nodules, thus it is indicated for these conditions.
[Contraindications] Miao Xiyong stated: This is a drug that clears heat but does not tonify. It is contraindicated in cases where carbuncles and ulcers have already ulcerated, when fire-heat arises from deficiency, or in patients with weak Spleen and Stomach causing diarrhea.
[Gujingcao (Eriocauli Flos)]
Taste: Acrid, sweet. Nature: Slightly warm. Non-toxic. It derives its nature from Metal. It ascends; it is Yang.
[Indications] Primarily treats throat obstruction (Hou Bi), wind-pain in teeth, and various sores and scabies. (Kai Bao Ben Cao) Treats head wind-pain, blindness, corneal opacities (Yi Mo), post-varicella opacities, and stops bleeding. (Li Shizhen)
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Liver meridian. Also enters the Stomach meridian. It is a substance for clearing heat and improving vision. (Essential herb for tonifying Liver Qi, light and floating, acting upward)
[Preliminary Discussion] Li Shizhen said: Its body is light and its nature is floating, enabling it to ascend to the Yangming meridian regions. It is used to treat various eye diseases. Its merit in improving vision and dispelling opacities surpasses that of Chrysanthemum... (Text fragment implies superiority). This belongs to the light agents section of the Herbal category.
[Baicaoshuang (Carbonis Herba)]
Taste: Acrid. Nature: Warm. Non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily aids digestion of food stagnation. Used in formulas for the Lower Jiao. (Su Song) Stops bleeding from above and below. Treats metrorrhagia and leukorrhea in women, as well as various diseases before and after childbirth, and dysentery.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Liver, Lung, and Stomach meridians. It is an agent for emergency symptomatic treatment. (Functions: Stops bleeding, eliminates stagnation)
[Preliminary Discussion] Yu Tun stated: Baicaoshuang, also known as soot from the stove bottom or dust from the beams, are all formed by condensed smoke. However, their substances differ in being light/void versus dense/solid. Those that are heavy... (Text fragment) Their treatment of blood loss and obstetric conditions, while following the principle that "blood stops upon seeing black," also adheres to the logic of contrary treatment (Fan Zhi).
[Contraindications] Miao Xiyong stated: Although it can stop bleeding, it benefits neither the intestines nor the stomach. It can only address symptoms (Biao), not the root (Ben). Avoid excessive use.
[Processing] Li Shizhen stated: This is the soot from the stove lip and smoke furnace. Its texture is light and fine, hence called "frost." The soot from the lips of old stoves in deep villages is particularly... (Text ends abruptly)
