[Copper Green]
Also known as Tonglu (Copper Verdigris). Flavor: Sour. Nature: Neutral. Slightly toxic. Copper is generated from Earth, and the green color is formed by its essence blooming outward.
[Indications] Primarily treats heart pain due to blood and qi disorders in women. Used for stopping bleeding in metallic wounds. Brightens the eyes and treats erythema of the skin and polyps. (From *Bencao Shiyi*) Treats wind-induced ulcerative eye conditions and tearing. (From Li Dang's *Li Shi Yaolu*)
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Liver and Gallbladder meridians. It is a specialized herb for dispelling wind-phlegm.
[Preliminary Discussion] Ge Hong stated in *Baopuzi*: It treats diseases of the Liver and Gallbladder, which also illustrates the principle of Metal overcoming Wood.
[Contraindications] Miao Xiyong stated in *Bencao Jing Shu*: For eye pain and corneal opacities not caused by external invasion of wind-heat, but rather by Liver deficiency and blood insufficiency, it is contraindicated.
The above belong to the Metal Category of Xuan (Dispersing) Agents.
[Pengsha / Borax]
This is Pengsha (Borax). Flavor: Salty, Sweet. Nature: Cool. Non-toxic. It is formed through collection, decoction, and leaching crystallization, similar to saltpeter and sand.
[Indications] Primarily resolves phlegm, stops coughing, and breaks up masses. Treats throat obstruction (Houbi). (From *Xinxiu Bencao*) Clears heat-phlegm in the Upper Jiao chest and diaphragm. Generates body fluids. Removes bad breath. Eliminates visual obstructions (cataracts/opacities).
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Lung meridian. It is an agent that generates fluids, resolves phlegm, and drains heat. (A key herb for throat disorders; it can also soften metals and remove grease.)
[Preliminary Discussion] Su Song said: Currently, physicians use Borax to treat throat diseases, which is most critical. Kou Zongshi said: When one first feels swelling and pain in the throat, holding it in the mouth to swallow the saliva provides relief. This utilizes its property of softening substances. Its treatment of eye obstructions caused by phlegm-heat utilizes its property of removing dirt.
Zhao Lian noted: For infant thrush (snow-mouth), grinding Borax alone into fine powder and blowing it into the affected area yields immediate results.
[Contraindications] Miao Xiyong stated in *Bencao Jing Shu*: Borax acts by subduing and reducing, and its ability lies in dissipation. It is suitable for attacking excess conditions but difficult to apply to deficiency conditions. This is a temporary medication, not for long-term consumption.
[Preparation] Li Shizhen said: Those from Western Regions are white like alum; those from Southern Regions are yellow like peach gum. All are formed through refining and crystallization.
The above belong to the Stone Category of Xuan (Dispersing) Agents.
