[Preliminary Discussion] Shen Cunzhong said: Among all creatures containing blood, flesh grows easily, tendons are next, and bones are the most difficult to grow. Therefore, humans must reach twenty years of age before their bone marrow becomes solid. How can elk compare to ordinary blood? Baopuzi said: When hunters catch deer, they tie them up to take the velvet antlers, then kill the deer, because the blood has not yet dispersed. Kou Zhi said: Deer antler is the hardest to break without cracking, and it does not bleed when cut, because its power lies entirely within the blood. Su Song said: For deer antler, those that are yellow, tight, heavy, and sharp-tipped are good. Shave the deer antler into flakes. Used raw, it dissipates heat, promotes blood circulation, reduces swelling, and wards off evil. Or soaked in honey or wine, and roasted until yellow. Used cooked, it benefits the Kidneys, tonifies deficiency, strengthens essence, and invigorates blood. If refined into frost or boiled into paste, it tonifies Yang.
