This condition sometimes presents with a lack of strength in the elbows, sudden fainting, weakness or dancing/twitching movements of the hands and feet, or curled fists and uncontrolled extension/flexion of limbs. The limbs become cold, and the patient may lie on the ground; this is colloquially known as "Da Niao Feng" (Bird-Striking Wind).
The term "Wind" refers to this condition. The ancient text *Han Zhu* states: It is also named "Jue Feng" (Severed Wind), characterized by internal stifling and painful distress in the heart and abdomen. Vomiting of froth occurs, and over time, it leads to bleeding from the stool and vomiting of bluish-white saliva. The waist and spine become stiff, and the patient may suddenly collapse without awareness. This resembles Leprosy (Lai Zheng). Generally, the human body relies on Stomach Qi (Stomach Energy) to nourish the interior and irrigate the meridians and skin/muscles. If one indulges excessively in desires, overeating, drinking, sexual exhaustion, or emotional turmoil, causing Stomach Qi to fail, the meridians will become deficient and depleted. Consequently, muscles and sinews become lax and flaccid, and limbs cannot be controlled. As pathogenic Wind gradually combats with Qi and Blood, causing them to scatter, the patient suffers from fatigue, flaccidity, and prostration. Treatment involves using formulas such as Yili Jindan, Duoming Huanzhen Dan, Zhenfang Duoming Dan, and Simo Dan, combined with agents that dispel Wind, clear Heat/Fire, resolve Phlegm, and regulate Qi, to prevent progression into severe Leprosy (Da Feng), involving skin ulceration and paralysis, which are difficult to treat.
In the initial stage of this condition, the abdomen is distended while limbs are emaciated, resembling Gu Poison (Gu Tox). The eyes are red, and lips are everted. Over time, the whole body becomes swollen, with purplish-black discoloration under the skin, presenting as large, empty edema. Hair falls out first, and the appearance becomes ugly. Later, it progresses to rotting, critical distress, tremors, facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eyes), and contractures; this is also called "Bi Feng". The condition is malignant, dangerous, rapid, and easily contagious/harmful to others. It results from deficiency and damage of Qi and Blood, allowing nine types of Zhuxie parasites to enter the Stomach Fu-organs and corrode the Zang-organs. Alternatively, it may arise from excessive Cold-Dampness, blood stasis in the meridians, and combative Deficient Fire. Treatment selects from Jiuku Huisheng Dan, Soushun Fengqi Wan, and Simo Dan. Such conditions may also result from evil influences and damage to Yin and Yang.
Another type involves sores on the face resembling cat's eyes, lacking luster or color, with no pus discharge, which recede spontaneously in winter, affecting both head and back. This is named "Han Chuang" (Cold Sore), a strange disease caused by excessive consumption of chicken, fish, garlic, and leeks. It heals itself with warming and tonifying formulas.
Li Jie Feng (Joint-Wandering Wind), Hao Chuang (Oyster Sores), Ga Sao, Ji Zhao Feng (Chicken Claw Wind), and Ci Feng (Thorn Wind) all belong to the category of Tong Feng (Gout-like diseases). Yu Lin Xuan (Fish Scale Tinea), E Zhang Feng (Goose Palm Wind), Yan Lai Feng, Zhen Feng, and Gan Feng all belong to the category of Yang Feng (Itchy Wind).
There are many categories of skin diseases. Pain that wanders indicates the circulation of Wind and pathogenic factors. Pain fixed in one place without movement indicates accumulation of dead blood (blood stasis). Twitching sensations that shift rapidly like knife or awl stabs, where the source cannot be found, indicate Dampness flowing into joints. Symptoms worsening at night and quiet during the day indicate Yin pathogens harassing Yang. Relief in the evening and worsening at dawn indicate Yang pathogens harassing Yin. Onset during rainy weather or severe winter cold indicates condensation of Cold-Dampness. Pain that is neither pain nor itchiness, accompanied by chills and unknown location, indicates Qi and Blood injury from overwork with scattering of Damp-Phlegm. All these arise because pathogenic factors injure the interior and correspond with Zang-Fu organs. Regarding itching: superficial floating itching indicates Blood deficiency with Fire attacking. Itching externally but pain internally indicates pathogens in the exterior with toxins injecting inward. Relief after cauterization or hot water application indicates stagnation of stagnant blood from overwork. Itching that becomes painful upon scratching indicates aggregation of Heat due to Blood deficiency. Swelling upon exposure to sunlight indicates failure of Yuan Qi (Original Qi) with various Fires distributing in the Couli (pores/skin interspaces). Ancient texts state "Pain has no tonification method," and "Itching/Numbness should be tonified, Pain should be purged." Actually, if Meridians are filled with pathogens, tonification aids the pathogen; if Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) is deficient, purging draws pathogens deeper, leading to incurable states.
Zi Yun Ban (Purple Cloud Spots), Bai Dian Feng (Vitiligo), Da Ma Feng (Leprosy), He Tao Xuan (Walnut Tinea), and Ya Feng (Mute Wind) all belong to the category of Leng Ma (Cold Numbness). Tuo Gen Chuang (Heel Loss Sores), Gao Chuang, She Pi Xuan (Snake Skin Tinea), Lou Ti Feng, Xue Bi, and Re Feng all belong to the category of Lan Hui (Rotting/Filthy).
Conditions that are neither pain nor itch, or feel like grasping/stabbing/cutting without sensation, or feel like pressing through a paper layer, or involve acid/chilly numbness, are termed "Mu" (Wood-like), meaning severe numbness. Conditions where sores itch, ulcerate, drip pus/blood, ooze turbid sticky fluid, burst, crack, and exhibit subcutaneous rotting/odor belong to the category of Lan Huai (Rotting/Destruction).
Ha Ma Zhong (Toad Swelling), Lou Hui Zhong, Xue Feng Zhong, Shui Feng Zhong, Gu Feng Zhong, and Dian Feng all belong to the category of Zhong Zhang (Swelling). Xie Mei Bing (Evil Spirit Disease), Gu Chui Bing (Drumstick Disease), Ruan Tan (Soft Paralysis), Bi Ni Bing (Wall Mud Disease), Ban Zhi Fei (Hemiplegia), and Xie Xie (Diarrhea) all belong to the category of Wei Bei (Flaccidity/Exhaustion).
Any condition featuring bodily flaccidity, abdominal distension like a drum, swelling of hands/feet/head/face with loose skin not breaking open, irregular convexities/concavities, chest oppression, hypochondriac fullness/pain, impaired Qi ascent/descent, and mental discomfort belongs to the category of Zhong Zhang (Swelling). Any condition featuring finger contractures/deformities, leg/toe limping, kyphosis of waist/back, facial deviation, bodily flaccidity/exhaustion, left/right hemiplegia, emaciation/stiffness/flaccidity, and difficulty walking belongs to the category of Wei Huai (Flaccidity/Destruction).
