Lanzhang (miasma) is the damp and turbid Qi condensing deeply within mountains and rivers. When the Way of Heaven deviates, it fills and obstructs the four quarters of the universe, thereby obscuring the luster of the sun and moon. It is like a person suffering from Lifeng (leprosy), whose eyes become dim due to the steaming and attacking pathogenic factors of damp-heat and toxic heat, or who has taken heat-toxic medicines for a long time; this leads to nebulae and ulcers in the eyelids, resulting in natural blindness.
Clouds follow dragons, and winds follow tigers; this is the physical principle of Yin and Yang. If the dragon and tiger lose their functions, violent Jue Qi (rebellious Qi) exerts its power, causing clouds and winds to change suddenly and steeply, lightning and thunder to clash, torrential rains to pour down, and fierce hurricanes to roar. The waves surge and overflow, becoming wild and uncontrolled. Similarly, if a person suffering from Fengli does not cherish their life and body, but instead exposes themselves to thief-pathogens, the Blood and Qi will be荡败 (routed and ruined) because of this, and malignant syndromes will alter accordingly. Once a major disease is established, how can it be treated?
When fire burns Kun Gang, both jade and stone turn to ashes. How can grass and trees withstand the raging flood of soot? Their branches and leaves scorch and fall, and their roots are injured and damaged. Similarly, when a person suffering from Fengbing has excessive internal pathogenic fire, their hair, beard, and eyebrows become dry, scorched, and fall out; the marrow and fluids dry up; the face loses its luster; and the skin becomes yellow, emaciated, and dull.
The *Laozi* states: "The Spirit of the Valley never dies, this is called the Mysterious Female." It also says: "The root of the Mysterious Female is the Gate of all Wonders." In humans, the Niwang Palace (upper dantian) and Dantian (lower dantian) are guarded by Yuanshen (Original Spirit). If Yuanshen does not reside there, Jingqi (Essence and Qi) will scatter, and diseases will arise. If the Spirit does not reside in the palace, the Shen (Spirit) will dissipate, and Yuanqi (Original Qi) will have no foundation. Then from where would sound respond? If Shenqi is damaged and Yuanshen is deficient, the Tuoyue (bellows-like mechanism of Qi movement) and joints will fail critically, leading to changes in voice. For instance, in a person with Fengbing, intense pathogenic flames cause mental confusion and the collapse of Blood and Qi. Since the Tuoyue and epiglottis cannot be nourished and controlled, symptoms such as disordered speech, hoarseness, mutism, and stupor occur, along with increased forgetfulness and inversion of memory.
The fruits of grasses, trees, and grains are formed from flowers, and the guide for the flower is the cluster of powder on the heart of the flower. If the pollen box of the flower is damaged, it will not bear fruit. If the center of the flower is eaten away by bees and butterflies during blooming, it will not form fruit, and even if it forms, it will struggle to grow large. From this, we know that human Yuanshen resides in Jingqi, and the preservation of Yuanshen relies entirely on the accumulation of Kidney Water. If a person with Fengbing does not cherish their life, indulges in lust, and damages their essence and fluids, it is like a flower having its heart damaged; thus, their life span cannot be prolonged.
