Question: What are the eighteen Yang diseases? The Master said: Headache, stiffness of the neck, low back pain, spine pain, pulling pain in the arms, and pulling pain in the legs. What are the eighteen Yin diseases? The Master said: Cough, upward rushing of Qi, wheezing, hiccups, throat obstruction, borborygmus, abdominal distension and fullness, heart pain, and tension/cramping. Each of the five Zang organs has eighteen diseases, totaling ninety diseases; humans also have six minor pathogens, each having eighteen diseases, totaling one hundred eight diseases. The Five Exhaustions, Seven Injuries, Six Extremes, and Thirty-six Diseases of Women are not included in this count. Clear pathogens reside in the upper part, turbid pathogens reside in the lower part. Major pathogens attack the exterior, minor pathogens penetrate the interior. Pathogens from food/drink entering through the mouth constitute retained food. The five types of pathogens attacking humans follow specific patterns: Wind attacks in the morning, Cold attacks in the evening, Dampness injures the lower part, Fog injures the upper part; Wind causes the pulse to be floating, Cold causes the pulse to be tight, Fog injures the skin and interstices, Dampness flows into the joints, Food damages the Spleen and Stomach. Extreme Cold injures the meridians, Extreme Heat injures the collaterals.
Discussion: Lily Disease is a condition where all vessels belong to one source, and thus all are affected by the disease. The patient desires to eat but cannot; often remains silent; wishes to lie down but cannot sleep, wishes to walk but cannot move; sometimes finds food palatable, sometimes loses the sense of smell for food or feels aversion to its odor; seems cold but is not actually cold, seems hot but is not actually hot, bitter taste in the mouth, dark red urine; various medicines fail to cure it, and upon taking medicine, severe vomiting and diarrhea occur, as if possessed by spirits; the body shape appears normal, but the pulse is slightly rapid. If headache occurs during urination, recovery takes sixty days; if there is no headache during urination but rather a shivering sensation, recovery takes forty days; if urination is smooth but accompanied only by dizziness, recovery takes twenty days. These symptoms may appear before the disease manifests, or emerge four to five days after onset, or appear mildly after twenty days or a month; treatment should follow the specific syndrome.
In men with a normal constitution, a weak, fine, and subtle pulse indicates a predisposition to night sweats.
