The left Cun (Cun position on the radial artery) Heart pulse is slightly flooding (Hong), which indicates an excess of Qi and Blood, signifying a state of health without disease. If it presents the characteristic pulse of its own meridian (Heart Meridian)—namely short, fine, slight, and wiry—it indicates a syndrome of deficiency in both Qi and Blood. Such women may experience distension and fullness in both hypochondriac regions, frequent pain in the heart region, physical weakness, and softness/weakness in the legs. The appropriate primary formula is Fuling Buxin Tang (Poria Decoction for Nourishing the Heart).
Herbs: Gancao (Licorice Root), Chuanxiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Chi Fuling (Red Poria with Wood), Ruxiang (Frankincense), Moyao (Myrrh), Chi Shaoyao (Red Peony Root), Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. For each dose, use one zhong (ancient unit of volume) of water, add three slices of fresh ginger, and decoct until seven-tenths of the liquid remains. Strain the dregs, add a small amount of vinegar, and take warm on an empty stomach.
The right Guan (Guan position on the radial artery) Liver pulse is slightly wiry (Xian), which indicates an excess. If it presents the characteristic pulse of its own meridian (Liver Meridian)—namely slight, fine, short, choppy, deep, and slow—it indicates a deficiency syndrome. Symptoms include pain in the four limbs' meridians and all joints, and qi-blood masses in the chest and heart region.
Herbs: Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Sumu (Sappan Wood), Honghua (Carthamus Flower), Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange), Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), Chi Shaoyao (Red Peony Root), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Taoren (Peach Seed), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root); if pain is severe, add Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. For each dose, use one and a half zhong of water, decoct until seven-tenths of the liquid remains. Strain the dregs and take warm well after meals.
The right Chi (Chi position on the radial artery) Kidney pulse is large and tight, indicating an excess, which signifies balanced Qi and Blood, regular fertility, abdominal comfort, and overall bodily harmony, often free from illness; this is termed "excess" in a positive sense. If it presents the characteristic pulse of its own meridian (Kidney Meridian)—namely deep and fine to the point of being imperceptible—it indicates a syndrome of excess Qi and deficient Blood. The appropriate primary formula is Tiaojing Tang (Regulating Menstruation Decoction).
Herbs: Puhuang (Typha Pollen), Chi Shaoyao (Red Peony Root), Liu Jinu (Knawel Herb), Chi Fuling (Red Poria with Wood), Chuanxiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome), Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Sangjisheng (Taxillus Branch), Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizome), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), Gancao (Licorice Root), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Xiangbaizhi (Angelica Dahurica), Xiangfuzi (Cyperus Rhizome).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. For each dose, use one and a half zhong of water, add three slices of fresh ginger and two dates, and decoct until seven-tenths of the liquid remains. Take warm on an empty stomach.
If both the Liver and Kidney pulses are deep, fine, and imperceptible, the woman may suffer from continuous dripping of menstrual blood, constant leukorrhea, acute lower abdominal pain, infertility, or occasional amenorrhea. Tiaojing Tang (Regulating Menstruation Decoction) is also appropriate.
The right Cun Lung pulse is slightly choppy (Se), indicating an excess. If it presents the characteristic pulse of its own meridian (Lung Meridian)—namely deep and choppy, or floating and short—it indicates a deficiency. Symptoms include disharmony of Lung Qi, retching, cough, qi obstruction, wheezing, and chest fullness. The appropriate primary formula is Maidong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction).
Additions: Xingren (Apricot Seed), Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces and decocted with fresh ginger and dates.
The right Guan Spleen pulse is large and moderate (Huan), indicating an excess. If it presents the characteristic pulse of its own meridian (Spleen Meridian)—namely moderate, fine, short, and small—it indicates a deficiency. Such women primarily suffer from fanwei (regurgitation/vomiting food back up), vomiting clear fluid, edema of the four limbs, and distending pain during menstruation. The appropriate primary formula is Chenxiang San (Agarwood Powder).
Herbs: Chenxiang (Aquilaria Wood), Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), Gancao (Licorice Root), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Mugua (Chaenomeles Fruit), Zisu (Perilla Leaf), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. Use one and a half zhong of water, add three slices of fresh ginger and three stalks of white onion, and decoct.
The right Chi Kidney pulse is floating and large, indicating an excess. If it presents the characteristic pulse of its own meridian (Kidney Meridian)—namely deep, fine, short, and rapid—it indicates irregular menstruation. Symptoms include alternating chills and fever, vexation and oppression in the chest and heart, and pain in all joints; this is termed deficiency. The appropriate primary formula is Zhi Mu Huang Qin Tang (Anemarrhena and Scutellaria Decoction).
Herbs: Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome), Gancao (Licorice Root), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Dihuang (Rehmannia Root).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. Use one and a half zhong of water, add three slices of fresh ginger and three stalks of white onion, and decoct.
If both positions of the right Chi Kidney pulse are deep, fine, and imperceptible, it indicates depletion of Qi and Blood. Symptoms include borborygmus (rumbling in the abdomen), dull pain, persistent pain in the anterior and posterior chest, and a frequent need for someone to beat the back to achieve tranquility. The appropriate primary formula is Muxiang Huazhi Tang (Aucklandia Regulating Stagnation Decoction).
