Palm Diagram of the Six Pulses
If it is the Bingxu year, and one encounters a Bingxu day or hour, provided the patient suffers from a Heart Meridian disease, death will occur at this time coinciding with the same Qi movement. If this day can be survived, treatment is possible.
If it is the Yixi year, and one encounters a Yixi day or hour, provided the patient suffers from a Liver Meridian disease, death will occur at this time coinciding with the same Qi movement. If this day can be survived, treatment is possible.
If it is the Dinghai year, and one encounters a Dinghai day or hour, provided the patient suffers from a Spleen Meridian disease, death will occur at this time coinciding with the same Qi movement. If this day can be survived, treatment is possible.
If it is the Wuwu year, and one encounters a Wuwu day or hour, provided the patient suffers from a Lung Meridian disease, death will occur at this time coinciding with the same Qi movement. If this day can be survived, treatment is possible.
If it is the Jichou year, and one encounters a Jichou day or hour, provided the patient suffers from a Kidney Meridian disease, death will occur at this time coinciding with the same Qi movement. If this day can be survived, treatment is possible.
On the first day, Taiyang disease (a syndrome caused by pathogenic invasion of the Taiyang meridian), presenting with headache and fever, the method should be diaphoresis (sweating). If the patient had excess constitution in previous years, use Shuangjie San (Double Resolution Powder); if the patient had deficient constitution in previous years, use Renshen Baidu Yin (Ginseng Decoction for Rescuing from Toxicity). Suppose this year is Yiwei, with Wet Earth ruling the sky (dominating the climate of the first half of the year) and Taiyin Cold Water governing the earth (dominating the climate of the second half of the year in Chen/Xu years). Next year, use Shuangjie San. Furthermore, if the pulse is empty, floating, and scattered, rapid and large, it is called "excess," denoting an Excess pattern; if the pulse is short, rapid, and thready, it is called "deficiency," denoting a Deficiency pattern.
On the second day, Yangming disease (a syndrome caused by pathogenic invasion of the Yangming meridian), Tiaozhong Tang (Regulating the Middle Decoction) should be used, added with Siling San (Four Porias Powder).
On the third day, Shaoyang disease (a syndrome caused by pathogenic invasion of the Shaoyang meridian), Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) is indicated.
On the fourth day, Taiyin disease (a syndrome caused by pathogenic invasion of the Taiyin meridian), body pain occurs.
On the fifth day, Shaoyin disease (a syndrome caused by pathogenic invasion of the Shaoyin meridian), dry mouth and parched tongue occur.
On the sixth day, Jueyin disease (a syndrome caused by pathogenic invasion of the Jueyin meridian), purgation (downward draining) is required.
On the seventh day, the transmission through the six meridians is complete, and it returns to Taiyang. Again, apply diaphoresis or purgation as appropriate.
If the pulse is floating and tight, and the patient is extremely vexed, apply diaphoresis again. If the pulse is deep and slow, and feels tight and solid upon pressure, apply purgation again.
If the Right Guan pulse (the position on the radial artery corresponding to the Stomach/Spleen) exhibits the characteristics of the Yangming Stomach Earth pulse, being floating, tight, and surging, with slight redness of the head and face, it is predicted that macules (rash) will erupt.
In men, the Chi pulse (the position on the radial artery corresponding to the Kidneys/Essence) is usually weak. (If Qi is in excess, there is no illness.)
In women, the Chi pulse is usually strong. (If Blood is in excess, there is no illness.)
The Classics state: For women, view it inversely. (Women should have a strong Chi pulse and weak Cun pulse; men should have a strong Cun pulse and weak Chi pulse.) This is called "inverse." Diagnosis of diseases follows this principle similarly.
For unmarried girls, the pulse shows a weak Chi and strong Cun. For unmarried boys, the pulse shows a strong Chi and weak Cun.
If a man's Chi pulse is large and floating, it is named Deficiency, and he will inevitably suffer from spermatorrhea or seminal emission.
If a woman's Chi pulse is floating and large, or deep and thready, she will inevitably suffer from irregular menstruation. This is the pulse of partial deficiency and leaking blood. If combined with the pregnancy pulse, where the Chi pulse is tight, solid, and large, yet regular and harmonious, she is certainly pregnant. If accompanied by vomiting and nausea, it indicates three months of pregnancy. A floating and large Left Chi pulse predicts a male fetus; a floating and large Right Chi pulse predicts a female fetus.
