The classic states: The Liver is green and symbolizes Wood; the Lungs are white and symbolize Metal. Now (the annotation notes a missing "now"), the Liver sinks in water. According to principle, Wood floats in water, while Metal sinks in water. Yet now it is Wood that sinks and Metal that floats. What is the meaning of this?
However, the Liver is not pure Wood, but Yi-You (Yi Wood and You Metal). It is the soft subordinate of Geng Metal. In grand terms, it discusses Yin and Yang; in small terms, it discusses husband and wife. It releases its subtle Yang and absorbs subtle Yin Qi. Its inclination favors Metal, and it performs the path of Yin more frequently. Therefore, the Liver sinks in water.
The Lungs are not pure Metal, but Xin-Si (Xin Metal and Si Fire). They are the soft subordinate of Bing Fire. In grand terms, they discuss Yin and Yang; in small terms, they discuss husband and wife. They release their subtle Yin, marry and tend toward Fire. Their inclination favors Fire, and they perform the path of Yang more frequently. Therefore, the Lungs float in water.
Why do Lungs with Heat sink? One must know that Xin should belong to Geng, and Yi should be incorporated into Jia.
Excess of the Heart Channel:
Huanglian Jiedu San (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxicity) clears heat from the center of the Heart. Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), and Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae) are used together. Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis) serves as the guiding herb and requires careful consideration. The profound methods within are understood by few.
Deficiency of the Heart Channel:
Qingxin Lianzi Yin (Lotus Seed Decoction for Clearing the Heart) tonifies the center of the Heart. Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), and Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis) are included. Lianrou (Semen Nelumbinis) and Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis) are most tonifying. Fuling (Poria) combined with ingredients from Bawei Wan (Eight-Tonics Pill) and Renshen (Radix Ginseng) are used.
