Do not let people worry about whether it is a deficiency syndrome. Whenever wind-pathogen invades and causes anhidrosis (absence of sweating), it is because the couli (pores) are closed, and the pathogen cannot be discharged through sweat; this situation is suitable for treatment with diaphoresis (sweating method). However, if Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) is used to treat patients with spontaneous sweating, it will cause further depletion and loss of body fluids, resulting in severe harm. For stroke accompanied by spontaneous sweating, although Zhang Zhongjing used Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction), how can one cure cases where convulsions do not stop, mouth and eyes twitch, and the whole body sweats merely by treating each symptom individually? At such times, Duhuo Tang (Angelica Pubescens Decoction) and Xuming Zhusan (Xuming Boiled Powder) are indispensable as they restore Ying-Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) and expel wind-pathogen.
[Xue Ji] If the aforementioned symptoms involve spontaneous sweating due to insecure couli, use Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) or Fangfeng Baizhu Muli San (Saposhnikovia, Atractylodes Macrocephala and Oyster Shell Powder). If spontaneous sweating results from excessive use of wind-expelling drugs, use Baizhu Fangfeng Tang (Atractylodes Macrocephala and Saposhnikovia Decoction). If it is caused by deficient Yang Qi, use Fuzi Tang (Aconite Root Decoction). If accompanied by night sweating, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) taken with Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia). If ineffective, use Danggui Liuhuang Tang (Angelica Sinensis and Rhizoma Chuanbeimu Decoction).
Duhuo Tang (Angelica Pubescens Decoction) treats dizziness and confusion due to wind-deficiency, unawareness of one's own condition, spasms of hands and feet, inability to sit or lie comfortably, alternating chills and fever, blood deficiency that cannot tolerate diaphoretic drugs, and spontaneous sweating in stroke; it is especially suitable for these conditions.
Chuan Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) [remove rhizomes from five herbs], Xixin (Herba Asari), Fushen (Poria cum Radix Pini) [remove wood], Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) [wash seven times in hot water, slice], Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi), Baiwei (Radix Cynanchi Atrati), Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae) [remove heart], Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) [each half liang].
Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) [seven qian half, honey-fried].
Crush the above ingredients. Take eight qian per dose, add one and a half zhan of water and five slices of fresh ginger, decoct until七分 remains, remove dregs, and take warm at any time.
Xuming Zhusan (Xuming Boiled Powder) treats stagnation of wind-qi causing mental confusion, weakness in four limbs, deviation of mouth and eyes, occasional convulsions, loss of body fluids, thirst, and desire to drink. This formula supports Ying-Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) and dispels empty wind; it is especially suitable for spontaneous sweating in stroke and postpartum stroke with spontaneous sweating.
Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Xixin (Herba Asari), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae) [remove heart], Jingjiesui (Cacumen Schizonepetae) [each half liang].
Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi) [seven qian half].
Crush the above ingredients. Take five qian per dose, add one zhan of water and three large slices of fresh ginger, decoct until七分 remains, remove dregs, and take warm at any time. If sweating is profuse and unceasing, add one and a half fen of Muli Fen (Oyster Shell Powder).
Biyi Fangfeng Baizhu Muli San (Supplementary Saposhnikovia, Atractylodes Macrocephala and Oyster Shell Powder) treats unceasing spontaneous sweating in stroke.
Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Muli (Concha Ostreae) [calcined], Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) [equal parts].
Grind into fine powder. Take with wine or rice broth, three times daily; sweating will stop. If it does not stop, Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus Decoction to Establish the Middle) may be taken.
[Wind of Thieves and Hemiplegia]
The Old Man Yaoyin said: The manifestation of hemiplegia (piangu) is paralysis of half the body, emaciation of muscles, pain between bones, while mental clarity remains normal; this is called hemiplegia. Investigating the origin of this disease, it is all due to imbalance and deficiency of Yin and Yang, weakness of Zang-Fu organs, emptiness of meridians, and insufficiency of Blood and Qi. Sitting in the wind allows the wind-pathogen to enter via deficiency. The *Neijing* states: "Sweating on only one side leads to hemiplegia." Analyzing its meaning, it is like a tree where one side lacks fluid nourishment and dries up first, then suffers damage from wind. Similarly, in the human body, if one side lacks Blood and Qi nourishment and dries up first, it then suffers from wind-pathogen; the principle is clear.
Wang Ziheng said: A boat floats on water but can also capsize; wind nourishes the body but can also harm it. This means just as water leaks into a boat, wind enters a leaking body. The ancients said: "To treat wind, first treat Blood; when Blood flows, wind extinguishes itself." Treatment should first nourish Blood, then expel wind, ensuring recovery. Suitable formulas include Da Bafeng Tang (Great Eight-Wind Decoction), Zengsun Yinyu Jiu (Modified Yinyu Wine), and Xuduan Tang (Dipsacus Decoction).
[Grand Theory] Wind of thieves and hemiplegia occurs when one side of the body is deficient and receives wind, with wind lodging in half the body. People who have injured their Blood and Qi through labor, leaving one side deficient, allow wind-pathogen to enter that half-body, named Pi Feng (Half-Body Wind). If the wind-pathogen penetrates deeply, True Qi departs, and Evil Qi remains, developing into hemiplegia. This is due to decline and damage of Blood and Qi, allowing wind to lodge, preventing Blood and Qi from circulating and nourishing the muscles, thus causing hemiplegia.
[Xue Ji] "To treat wind, first treat Blood" is correct. Generally, this syndrome often arises from poor care during pregnancy or postpartum, leading to exhaustion of Essence and Blood, and desiccation of Liver Wood. The treatment method should nourish the source of transformation. Referencing the *Shengqi Tongtian Lun*: "Wind lodges and disrupts Qi, Essence is lost, and Evil injures the Liver." The *Yinyang Yingxiang Dalun* states: "Wind Qi connects with the Liver; wind constraint causes Heat excess; Heat excess dries Water; dried Water fails to nourish Qi, so Essence is lost." This is how wind diseases arise. A woman prone to anger had frequent spontaneous sweating and early menstruation. I diagnosed Liver Fire and Blood Heat. She did not believe me and indiscriminately used cooling-draining agents, which instead caused delayed menstruation. Later, due to fatigue and anger, she developed trismus (lockjaw), groaning, limb immobility, surging pulses, and red face. I used Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae), Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), and Danpi (Cortex Moutan). After several doses, she gradually improved. Combined with Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) and Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia), each taken for over thirty doses, she fully recovered.
Da Bafeng Tang (Great Eight-Wind Decoction) treats stroke hemiplegia, aphonia, hemiplegia, and occasional mental confusion.
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) [remove rhizome], Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) [bran-fried], Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) [honey-fried], Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) [processed, each two liang], Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) [each half liang], Chuan Wutou (Radix Aconiti Coreanae) [processed, peel and remove umbilical scar], Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) [remove rhizomes], Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae) [remove joints], Qinjiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae), Renshen (Radix Ginseng) [remove rhizomes], Shihu (Caulis Dendrobii) [remove roots, cut, wine-soaked and fried], Fushen (Poria cum Radix Pini) [remove wood], Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Huangqi (Radix Astragali) [remove rhizomes], Ziwan (Radix Asteris) [each one liang], Dadou (Sojae Semen Preparatum) [three liang, peel and fry].
Crush the above. Take five qian per dose, add two zhan of water and one he of wine, decoct until one zhan remains, remove dregs, and take warm. For mental confusion, do not use wine for decoction.
Another prescription omits Fushen and includes Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae) and Chifuling (Poria Cum Rubrum).
Zengsun Yinyu Jiu (Modified Yinyu Wine) treats hemiplegia, dry skin, gradual emaciation, or intermittent pain, named hemiplegia.
Yinyuye (Folium Berberidis), Chuan Wutou (Radix Aconiti Coreanae) [processed, peel and remove tip], Shinanye (Folium Photinianae), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Chuanjiao (Pericarpium Zanthoxyli) [stir-fry until oil appears], Niwei (Herba Polygoni Avicularis), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), Beixixin (Herba Asari), Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Juanbai (Herba Selaginellae), Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae), Tianxiong (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii) [processed, peel], Qinjiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae), Fangji (Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae) [each one liang], Zhizhuhua (Flos Daphnes Genkwa) [fried], Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Shenggandihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens) [each two liang], Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) [one liang].
Crush the above, soak in two dou of wine. Winter: seven days; Summer: three days; Spring/Autumn: five days. Initial dose: one he, gradually increase until effective, maintaining continuous alcohol effect.

Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) [three liang, remove rhizome], Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) [remove white pith], Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Xixin (Herba Asari) [each one liang, remove seedlings], Shenggandihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens) [two liang].
Crush the above. Take five qian per dose, add two zhan of water, decoct until eight fen remains, remove dregs, and take warm. For cold viscera with frequent diarrhea, add one liang of Shufuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) and mix with the other herbs.
Biyi Quansheng Hugugu San (Supplementary Complete-Life Tiger Bone Powder) treats hemiplegia and dry emaciation of muscles. Avoid using Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae) for diaphoresis, lest body fluids be exhausted; only moisten tendons, nourish Blood, and eliminate wind.
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) [two liang], Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Xuduan (Radix Dipsaci) [wine-soaked, fried], Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Bencao (Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong), Hugugu (Os Tigridis) [roasted, each five liang], Wushe (Corpora Elapidis) [roasted, half liang].
Grind into powder. Take two qian per dose, mix with wine. For bone pain, add one liang of Shengdi Huang (Radix Rehmanniae); for diarrhea, add half liang of Tianxiong (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii).
Hujinggu Jiu (Tiger Tibia Wine) treats stroke hemiplegia, limb immobility, all types of wind-bi, and tendon contraction/curling.
Shihu (Caulis Dendrobii), Shinanye (Folium Photinianae), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Hujinggu (Tibia Os Tigridis) [roasted], Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Yinyuye (Folium Berberidis), Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae) [wine-fried], Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae) [wine-soaked, fried], Xuduan (Radix Dipsaci) [wine-soaked, fried], Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Bajitian (Radix Morinda Officinalis) [remove heart], Gouji (Os Spinae Cervi) [remove hair, each one liang].
Place herbs in a silk bag, soak in one dou of wine for ten days. Take one zhan per dose, drink warm.
[Mouth Deviation]
Women with mouth deviation due to wind suffer from body deficiency receiving wind, where wind enters the tendons flanking the mouth. The tendons of the Foot-Yangming Meridian ascend flanking the mouth; if these tendons are deficient on one side, wind enters via deficiency, causing unilateral tendon tension and irregularity, leading to mouth deviation.
[Xue Ji] A woman with emotional depression suffered tendon spasms and bone pain, feeling a lump in the throat. After taking Ushunqi San (Tsaoko Fruit Regulating Qi Powder), she developed facial paralysis, difficulty extending arms, increased phlegm-saliva, internal heat, afternoon fever, poor appetite, and fatigue. I diagnosed Depression-Fire injuring Spleen and Blood Dryness generating Wind. I used Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction) for twenty doses, improving her physique and diet. Then Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) for over ten doses, reducing phlegm-heat and the throat lump. Further, Shengyang Yiewei Tang (Raise Yang and Benefit Stomach Decoction) for several doses, resolving most symptoms. However, arm extension remained impaired due to Liver Blood deficiency causing tendon spasm. I used Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) to nourish Kidney Water and generate Liver Blood, resulting in recovery.
Fangfeng Tang (Saposhnikovia Decoction) treats sudden mouth deviation and speech urgency.
Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) [remove rhizome, one liang], Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii) [remove rhizome, half liang], Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) [two qian half, honey-fried].

Grind into fine powder, mix well. Take one qian per dose, mix with warm wine, at any time.
*Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold)
Stir-fry three sheng of soybeans until charred, pour three sheng of wine over them, strain the juice, and take in one dose.
Treating Mouth Deviation
Use seven seeds of Bamiaz (Ricini Semen), peel, grind finely, and form into cakes. Place on the palm (right deviation on left hand, left deviation on right hand). Sit over a copper basin containing hot water, steaming the medicine. Wash off immediately once the face straightens. (Alternative: Use Badou (Crotonis Fructus) instead of Bamiaz. From *Bencao*).
