Ancient formulas specifically for women's wind-stroke are collected here. They mostly use Mahuang and Guixin; if not truly affected by external pathogens, they should not be used lightly. It is better to regulate according to Xue Ji's method. For other syndromes and treatments, see the Miscellaneous Diseases section; initial treatment for men and women is no different.
[Opisthotonos]
[Da Lun]: Opisthotonos in women is caused by constitutional deficiency allowing wind invasion into the Yang meridians. The Yin and Yang meridians circulate around the body; when wind enters the Yang meridians due to deficiency, it causes hyperextension and spasm of the waist and back, resembling a horn bow. Xiaoxuming Tang (Minor Continuation Decoction) is suitable.
[Xue Ji]: Master Zhang Zhongjing stated: Excessive sweating in Taiyang disease often leads to spasms; purging wind diseases leads to spasms. *San Yin Fang* states: Internal deficiency of Qi and Blood, attacked by Wind-Cold-Damp-Heat, leads to spasms. Since Wind disperses Qi, sweating without aversion to cold is called Soft Spasm; Cold congeals Blood, so no sweating with aversion to cold is called Hard Spasm. This is not solely due to Wind-Damp, but results from internal deficiency, excessive sweating causing blood loss, and tendons losing nourishment, representing a deficiency pattern. I believe this arises from excessive sweating and purging in Cold Damage, or in postpartum ulcers, or due to harsh drugs damaging Qi and Blood. If Metal is weak and Wood is hyperactive, first use Xieqing Wan (Draining Green Pill), then Yigong San (Yi-Gong Powder); if Kidney Water is deficient, use Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill); if Liver Fire is hyperactive, first use Jiawei Xiao Chaihu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction), then Jiawei Siwu Tang (Modified Four Substances Decoction); for fever, use Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder); if Wood insults Spleen Earth, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Middle-Boosting Qi-Enhancing Decoction) plus Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus); for Spleen Meridian stagnation, use Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Heart-Spleen Decoction); for Spleen Earth Damp-Heat, use Dachengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction). Generally, after illness when Qi and Blood are weak, decoct Renshen and Baizhu thickly, assist with Jiangzhi (Fresh Ginger Juice) and Zhuli (Bamboo Sap), administer frequently. If ineffective, use Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Complete Great Tonifying Decoction); if still ineffective, add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) or use Shenfu Tang (Ginseng and Aconite Decoction); if delayed, rescue is impossible. (Renshen one tael, Fuzi two qian, decoct in water.)

For others, refer to the Spasm section of Miscellaneous Diseases.
[Locked Jaw]
Wind-stroke with locked jaw in women is caused by constitutional deficiency allowing wind to invade the tendons connecting the jaw and cheeks. The tendons of the Three Yang Hand Meridians knot into the jaw and cheeks; the tendon of the Foot Yangming Meridian runs up along the mouth. Wind carrying cold invades these tendons due to deficiency, causing tendon spasm, which pulls the jaw tight resulting in locked jaw.
[Xue Ji]: If the above syndrome involves wind pathogen lodging in the Hand and Foot Yangming Meridians with facial deviation, use Qinjiao Shengma Tang (Kochia and Cimicifuga Decoction). If Wind-Heat damages Qi, use Shengfeng Tang (Wind-Prohibiting Decoction). These should be used together with subsequent formulas. One woman had prolonged menstruation due to anger, lasting half a month before stopping; upon anger, menstruation returned immediately. Severe cases involved locked jaw, tendon spasm, epistaxis, headache, phlegm-spasm, convulsions, and upward gaze of pupils. This was extreme Liver Fire, treated with Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) plus Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), after which it did not recur. Another woman with inherent Yin deficiency suffered generalized itching and mistakenly took wind-dispelling drugs, leading to locked jaw and convulsions; her Liver pulse was surging and rapid. I said: Liver Blood is Yin/Water, Liver Qi is Yang/Fire; this is Liver Meridian Blood deficiency with Fire excess. Assist Yin/Blood and suppress Liver Fire using Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma); heat and convulsions stopped suddenly. Then regulate with Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) for recovery.

[Aphasia]
Chao Yuanfang discussed: The Spleen meridian connects to the stomach, runs alongside the throat to the tongue root, and spreads under the tongue. The divergent meridian of the Heart ties to the tongue root. Now that the Heart and Spleen are affected by Wind Pathogen, the tongue becomes stiff and speech is lost. The throat is the passage for Qi; the epiglottis is the door of sound; the tongue is the mechanism of voice; the lips are the fan of sound. When Wind-Cold lodges between the epiglottis, sudden loss of voice occurs. All are caused by Wind Pathogen injury, hence called Wind-Stroke Aphasia. Classics state: Sleeping drunk facing the wind causes aphasia and inability to speak.
[Xue Ji]: If the above syndrome is due to Phlegm confusing the Heart Orifice, clear Heart Fire. If due to Damp-Phlegm stiffening the tongue, clear Spleen Heat. If due to Wind-Heat locking the jaw, clear Liver Fire. If due to Wind-Phlegm blocking the throat, guide out Phlegm-Saliva. If due to Deficiency Fire flaming upward, strengthen the Master of Water. If due to Qi deficiency with syncope, tonify the Source of Fire. If due to Kidney deficiency with dark tongue and aphasia, tonify Kidney Qi.
One woman fell due to anger, with surging phlegm and aphasia. After administering Niuhuang Qingxin Wan (Calculus Bovis Clearing Heart Pill) she regained consciousness slightly. Use Shenxian Jieyu Dan (Immortal Unlocking Speech Pill) plus Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) for gradual improvement. Then use Liujun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus) for recovery. Another woman had been aphasic for half a year, unresponsive to various medicines. Both Chi pulses were floating and rapid. First use Liuwei Wan material plus Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) for several doses, slightly improved. Then use Dihuang Yinzi (Rehmannia Infusion) for over twenty doses for recovery. Men often have this syndrome, also treated with this medicine. (All formulas see Miscellaneous Syndromes Wind-Stroke.)

[Wind-Bi Limb Immobility]
Women's Wind-Bi is caused by the combination of Wind, Cold, and Damp forming Bi. Predominant Wind is Wind-Bi, characterized by pain throughout the skin and muscles. All Yang meridians originate in the hands and feet and circulate through the body. Wind-Cold lodges in the skin and muscles, initially forming Bi, then injuring Yang meridians, stagnating in deficient areas, clashing with Qi and Blood. As Qi and Blood flow slowly, Wind-Bi results in limb immobility.
[Xue Ji]: Classics state: Where pathogen gathers, Qi must be deficient. If Wind Pathogen is rampant, or anger moves Liver Fire causing Blood dryness and tendon spasm, use Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder). If Spleen and Lung Qi are deficient, with insensible skin and numb limbs, use Sanbi Tang (Three Bi Decoction). If Kidney Water is depleted, failing to nourish sinews and bones, or Liver/Spleen Blood deficiency causing flaccid Bi, use Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill). If tendon spasm results from drying drugs, use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) and Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). If both Qi and Blood are deficient, use Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction). He's *Yilin Jiyao* and other formulas, new edition of *Danxi Xinfa Appendix* states: If a person has numbness in the thumb, weakness in limbs, or slight muscle twitching, severe wind-stroke will occur within three years. Preventively take Bafeng Tang (Eight Winds Decoction), Tianma Wan (Gastrodia Pill), Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Unblocking and Generating Harmony Powder). Little do they know He Jian said: Wind is the end of disease. Therefore, wind-stroke with paralysis is not due to internal Liver Wood Wind, nor external Six Evils Wind. It is truly due to extreme Five Emotions, blazing Heart Fire, depleted Kidney Water unable to control it, leading to Yin deficiency and Yang excess, stagnant heat, confused spirit, useless sinews and bones, and sudden collapse without consciousness. Treatment should focus on consolidating Yuan Qi. If one hastily takes Bafeng etc., it damages Yuan Qi, inviting wind-stroke. One woman, due to anger, vomited phlegm with chest fullness. Taking Erchen Tang (Two Aged Decoction), Shunqi (Regulating Qi), Huatan (Resolving Phlegm) agents led to hemiplegia, internal heat, dry mouth, extreme fatigue. I diagnosed Liver Fire blazing insulting Spleen Earth. Used Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder), Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Middle-Boosting Qi-Enhancing Decoction), Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill). Fortunately she was cautious about illness, recovered in over a year. A widow had chest/hypochondriac distension/pain, internal heat, afternoon fever, irregular menstruation, sore/numb limbs, frequent phlegm vomiting. Using Qingqi Huatan (Clearing Qi Resolving Phlegm) meds caused throat discomfort, leukorrhea, abdominal distension. Using Qingre Liqi (Clearing Heat Regulating Qi) meds caused chest oppression, intermittent limb numbness. I said: Originally Depression/Anger injured Liver/Spleen, previous meds damaged severely. Morning use Guipi Tang (Heart-Spleen Decoction) to resolve stagnation, generate Spleen Qi; evening use Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) to generate Liver Blood, clear Liver Fire. Over a hundred doses for recovery. Later, anger caused limb numbness again; Buzhong Yiqi Tang plus Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Fuling (Poria), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) cured it. Anger again, relapse, heavy menstruation, floating/surging/rapid pulse. Liver Fire injuring Spleen failing to control blood. Liujun Zi Tang, Chuanxiong, Danggui, Pao Jiang (Roasted Ginger) stopped bleeding in one dose. Buzhong Yiqi Tang plus Pao Jiang, Fuling, Banxia woke stomach in four doses. More Guipi Tang, Xiaoyao San regulated for recovery. Another woman with dizziness/phlegm vomiting used Huatan Liqi (Resolve Phlegm Regulate Qi) meds, limbs sometimes numb. Took Qufeng Huatan (Dispel Wind Resolve Phlegm) meds, limbs constantly numb, hands/feet alternately cold/hot. Spleen Earth deficient failing to generate Lung Metal. Buzhong Yiqi Tang plus Fuling, Banxia, Pao Jiang, over twenty doses, Spleen Qi gradually restored, symptoms improved. More Jiawei Xiaoyao San over thirty doses for recovery. Later anger caused phlegm vomiting, self-administered Qingqi Huatan Wan, poor appetite, excessive phlegm, chest/hypochondriac distension. I used Liujun Zi Tang doubled Renshen/Baizhu, little Muxiang, several doses for health.

Yaoyin Laoren (Old Man Yaoyin) said: Searching ancient wind-stroke formulas, Xuming (Continuation), Paifeng (Expelling Wind), Yuebi (Crossing Sheep) etc. can all eliminate [symptoms], while *Qianjin* mostly uses Mahuang,
