Xu Zhicai, a renowned physician of the Northern Qi Dynasty, stated: In the first month of pregnancy, it is called "Shi Pei" (Initial Embryo). The diet should be refined and well-cooked, with flavors favoring sour and delicious. Barley (*Hordeum vulgare*) is suitable to eat, while fishy and pungent/spicy foods should be avoided. This is referred to as "Cai Zheng". During the first month of pregnancy, the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture or moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. (Such as the acupoints Datur *LR1*, Xingjian *LR2*, Taichong *LR3*, Zhongfeng *LR4*, Wuli *LR5*, Zhongdu *LR6*.) The Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian internally connects to the Liver, which governs the sinews and blood. At this stage, blood circulation is sluggish; one should not engage in strenuous labor, sleep must be quiet, and fear or dread should be prevented.
In the first month of pregnancy, Yin and Yang energies newly combine to form the fetus. If Cold predominates, pain occurs; if Heat predominates, sudden fright occurs. Lifting heavy objects causes lower back pain, abdominal distension, and uterine urgency. Sudden vaginal bleeding requires preventive treatment. It is suitable to consume Wu Ci Ji Tang (Black Hen Decoction).
Wu Ci Ji Tang (Black Hen Decoction)
Wu Ci Ji (Black Hen, one piece, prepared for cooking) Poria (*Poria cocos*) E'jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) (each 2 liang) Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu, 1 sheng) Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong, 5 he, heart removed) Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao) Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) (each 3 liang) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang) (each 1 liang)
Chop the ingredients. Boil the hen in 12 sheng of water until the liquid reduces to 6 sheng. Remove the hen and dregs. Further decoct to obtain 3 sheng of liquid. Add 3 sheng of wine and dissolve the gelatin completely. Obtain 3 sheng of final liquid. Take 1 sheng warm, three times daily.
Bu Tai Tang (Fetus-Nourishing Decoction) If the first month's fetus was previously damaged, take this decoction preventively.
Asari Radix (Xixin, 1 liang) Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 2 liang) Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shudihuang) Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) (each 3 liang) Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 4 liang) Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu) Hordeum Vulgare (Damai) (each 5 he) Mume Fructus (Wumei, 1 sheng)
Chop the eight ingredients. Boil in 7 sheng of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng. Divide into three doses, taken before meals. If Cold predominates, double the dosage of Asari Radix and Evodiae Fructus. If Heat predominates with thirst, remove Evodiae Fructus and add Trichosanthis Radix (Gualougen, 2 liang). If there is excessive mental preoccupation, remove Barley and add Biota Seed (Baiziren, 3 he). Another version includes Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (1 liang).
In the second month of pregnancy, it is called "Shi Gao" (Initial Paste). Avoid pungent, spicy, and gamey foods. Reside in a quiet place. The husband should avoid overexertion. The pregnant woman may experience pain in all joints. This marks the initial formation of the fetus. During the second month, the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture or moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. (Such as the acupoints Danqiao, Qiuxu *GB40*, Fuyang *GB38*, Junmai *GB39*, Waiall, Yanglingquan *GB34*.) The Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian internally connects to the Gallbladder, which stores essence. In the second month, the fetus's essence forms in the uterus; care must be taken to prevent disturbance.
During the second month, Yin and Yang energies settle in the meridians. If Cold predominates, the fetus may fail to develop properly; if Heat predominates, the fetus may wither. Wind-Cold invasion may cause fetal movement. Symptoms include chest fullness, umbilical urgency, stiff back, sudden vaginal bleeding, and alternating chills and fever. It is suitable to consume Ai Ye Tang (Mugwort Leaf Decoction).
Ai Ye Tang (Mugwort Leaf Decoction)
Artemisiae Argyi Folium (Aiye) Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix (Danshen) Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang) (each 2 liang) Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) E'jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) (each 3 liang) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 1 liang) Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 6 liang) Jujubae Fructus (Dazao, 12 pieces)

Another version uses one black hen. Prepare as food, cut off the head, collect blood, mix with 3 sheng of wine. Boil the hen in 1.2 dou of water to extract juice. Remove chicken, add herbs, decoct to 3 sheng. Add blood, wine, and gelatin. Decoct to 3 sheng. Divide into three warm doses.
Huanglian Tang (Coptis Decoction) If the second month's fetus was previously damaged, take this decoction preventively.
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) (each 1 liang) Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu, 5 he) Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 3 liang) Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Shengdihuang, 5 liang; another version uses E'jiao)
Chop the five ingredients. Boil in 7 sheng of vinegar juice until reduced to 3 sheng. Divide into four doses: three times during the day, once at night. Reprepare every ten days. If discomfort persists, add Mume Fructus (1 sheng). When adding Mume Fructus, use plain water instead of vinegar juice. Another version includes Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Banliang).
In the third month of pregnancy, it is called "Shi Tai" (Initial Fetus). At this time, the form is not yet fixed, and external images influence internal development. To conceive a boy, handle bows and arrows. To conceive a girl, play with pearls and beads. To have a beautiful child, frequently view jade. To have a virtuous child, sit upright in purity. This is called "External Image and Internal Sensation". During the third month, the Hand Jueyin Pericardium Meridian nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture or moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. (Such as the acupoints Zhongchong *PC9*, Laogong *PC8*, Daling *PC7*, Neiguan *PC6*, Jianshi *PC5*, Ximen *PC4*, Quze *PC3*.) The Hand Jueyin Pericardium Meridian internally connects to the Heart. Avoid sorrow, worry, and fright.
The third month is for determining form. If Cold predominates, stool is green. If Heat predominates, urination is difficult, either red or yellow. Sudden fright, grief, or anger may cause falling. Disturbance of meridians leads to abdominal distension, periumbilical pain, or sudden vaginal bleeding from the waist/back. It is suitable to consume Xiong Ji Tang (Rooster Decoction).
Xiong Ji Tang (Rooster Decoction)
Gallus Galli Domesticus (Rooster, one piece, prepared for cooking) Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang) (each 1 liang) Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong, 5 he) Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao) Jujubae Fructus (Dazao, 12 pieces, broken) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) Poria (*Poria cocos*) E'jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) (each 2 liang)
Chop the ingredients. Boil the rooster in 1.3 dou of water until reduced by half. Remove rooster, add herbs. Decoct to half volume. Add 3 sheng of clear wine and gelatin. Decoct to 3 sheng. Divide into three doses, consumed within one day. Rest warmly afterwards. Another version uses Angelicae Sinensis Radix and Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (each 2 liang), without Scutellariae Radix or Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens.
Fushen Tang (Poria Spirit Decoction) For those who previously damaged the third month's fetus, take this formula preventively.
Poria Cum Pinus Radix (Fushen) Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix (Danshen) Os Draconis (Longgu) (each 1 liang) E'jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) (each 2 liang) Jujubae Fructus (Dazao, 21 pieces, broken) Phaseoli Semen Rubrum (Chixiaodou, 200 grains)
Chop the nine ingredients. Boil in 1 dou of vinegar juice until reduced to 3 sheng. Divide into four doses, taken before meals. After seven days, take one dose. For lower back pain, add Taxilli Ramulus (Sangjisheng, 2 liang). (*Shenshi Fang* includes Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus (2 liang) and Cannabis Fructus (1 sheng)).
[Zhu Danxi] A woman consistently miscarried around the third month. Her pulse was large and weak on the left hand, and choppy upon deep pressure, indicating blood deficiency. Since she was young, only Middle Qi was tonified to allow blood to flourish naturally. It was early summer. She was instructed to take Huangqin Powder (Scutellariae Radix) mixed in strong Baizhu Decoction (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma Decoction), one qian per dose, for dozens of doses. The pregnancy was preserved and delivered successfully. Reflecting on this, miscarriages due to Heat and Deficiency are common. Heat and Deficiency must be differentiated in severity. Around the third month, the Upper Jiao belongs to Ministerial Fire, making miscarriage easy. Hence, Scutellariae Radix, cooked Mugwort Folium, and Donkey-hide Gelatin are excellent fetuses-stabilizing medicines.
Three-Month Menstrual Cessation Pregnancy Test Method: Crush Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) into powder. Brew strong decoction. Take one spoonful on an empty stomach. Slight abdominal movement indicates pregnancy.
In the fourth month of pregnancy, Water Essence is received to form blood vessels. Diet should include rice and glutinous rice. Soups should include fish and wild goose. This enriches Blood and Qi to open the senses and circulate through the meridians.
During the fourth month, the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture or moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. (Such as the acupoints Guanchong *SI1*, Yangchi *SJ4*, Neiguan *PC6*, Sanyangjiao, Tianjing *SJ10*, Quyuan *SI13*.) The Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian connects to the Sanjiao (Triple Burner). In the fourth month, the fetus's six Fu Organs are formed. Maintain physical stillness, harmonize the mind, and regulate diet.
If Cold predominates in the fourth month, there is epigastric discomfort with nausea, chest diaphragm fullness, and loss of appetite. If Heat predominates, urination is difficult and frequent like strangury, with lower abdominal urgency. Sudden Wind-Cold causes stiff neck and pain, chills and fever. Fetal disturbance causes body movement, waist/back/abdominal discomfort, alternating timing. Fetal Qi presses on the chest causing irritability and restlessness. Sudden vaginal bleeding may occur. It is suitable to consume Juhua Tang (Chrysanthemum Decoction).
Juhua Tang (Chrysanthemum Decoction)
Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua, one piece, egg-sized) Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong, 1 sheng) Jujubae Fructus (Dazao, 12 pieces) Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 1.5 liang) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) (each 2 liang) Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang) E'jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) (each 3 liang) Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia, 4 liang) Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 5 liang)
Chop the ten ingredients. Boil in 8 sheng of water until reduced by half. Add 3 sheng of clear wine and gelatin. Decoct to 3 sheng. Divide into three doses. Rest warmly to induce sweating. Apply powder to the body. Protect against Wind-Cold for four to five days. Another version uses a black hen boiled for decoction.
