According to the *Shenghui Fang* (Prescriptions of Holy Grace): The so-called "Five-Color Dan" (Five-Color Erysipelas) in infants arises because the Dan toxin manifests with unpredictable changes, appearing in colors such as green, yellow, white, black, or red. This is due to the pathogenic heat of wind-toxin fluctuating between excess and deficiency, sometimes presenting cold characteristics and sometimes heat characteristics, thus giving rise to Five-Color Dan.
The *Kong Family Collection* recommends decocting and administering Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) according to standard procedures, and applying the medicinal dregs topically over the Dan lesion, which yields excellent results. Another prescription: Take equal parts of Chuan Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Chuan Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Zhi Zi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Gan Lan Ye (Isatidis Folium), and Shang Lu (Phytolaccae Radix); grind them into a fine powder, mix with water, and apply topically. Another prescription: Take four liang of Zao Shu Gen (Ziziphus Jujuba Root Bark), three liang of Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and one and a half liang of Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos); chop finely. For each two liang of this mixture, add five sheng of water and boil down to three sheng. Keep the infant away from drafts and bathe the child with water at a comfortable temperature. Another prescription: Take one jin of Zhu Gen Ye (Boehmeriae Niveae Folium et Caulis), finely chopped, and three he of Chi Xiao Dou (Vigna Adzuki Seed); add five sheng of water and boil down to three sheng, then strain. Bathe the infant with the warm liquid in a draft-free place. Another prescription: Crush the spiny green chestnut burrs (Qing Li Qiu), boil in water, and bathe the infant. Another prescription: Mix Pu Xi Hui (Ash of Cattail Mat) with Ji Bai (Albumen Ovi Galli) and apply topically. Another prescription: Apply cow dung to the affected area; replace when dry. Another prescription: Apply rotten mud from under a pig trough to the affected area; replace when dry. Another prescription: Bind the skull of a sow and have the infant lie on it as a pillow.
Regarding White Dan, it occurs due to the invasion of wind-cold qi, causing the skin to appear white. Initially, it presents with itching and pain, slight swelling resembling "Chui Nai" (a type of infantile breast-like swelling), without severe pain or redness, appearing only white.
Treatment prescriptions: Take five liang each of Suan Mu Cao (likely referring to a specific local herb, possibly *Mentha* species or similar aromatic herbs used locally) and Wu Ye Cao (Five-leaf Herb); crush and extract juice for topical application. Alternatively, take Chuan Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), pound into powder, and mix with fresh juice of Ma Chi Xian (Portulacae Herba) for topical application. Alternatively, crush Liao Ye (Polygoni Hydropiperis Folium) until pulpy and apply. Alternatively, crush Lan Xiang Ye (Litseae Cubebae Folium) until pulpy and apply. Alternatively, mix Cu (Vinegar) with dust from roof beams (Liang Shang Chen) and apply. Alternatively, mix Zhu Zhi (Porcine Fat) with Lu Jiao Hui (Ash of Cervi Cornu) and apply. Alternatively, burn pig manure to ash, mix with Ji Zi Bai (Albumen Ovi Galli), and apply.
Zhang Huan's Xiang Chi San (Fermented Soybean Powder): A prescription for treating White Dan characterized by fixed pain and swelling resembling "Chui Nai."
Ingredients: Xiang Chi (Fermented Sojae Semen Preparatum, two liang, stir-fried until scorched); Fu Long Gan (Caulis Longii, one liang).
Preparation: Grind the above ingredients into powder. Mix with raw sesame oil and apply topically.
The *Shenghui Fang* further states: The so-called "Bai Zhen" (White Rash/Prurigo) arises when wind qi stagnates within the muscles and combats with wind pathogens, thereby forming rashes. The condition worsens in cold weather or when exposed to wind, but improves or resolves in sunny warmth or when the body is warm. This formula is suitable for use.
Ingredient: Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, chopped).
Usage: Decoct in water, collect the juice, and wash/wipe the Dan lesion.
For treating pediatric wind-heat toxicity causing white swelling, or associated with E He Luo Li (malignant nodules/scrofula), Gu Ben Yong Ju (deep-seated abscesses), immobility of joints, White Dan spreading over the entire body, and persistent itching of White Rashes: Wu Xiang Lian Qiao Tang (Five-Aromatic Forsythia Decoction).
Ingredients: Qing Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Xun Lu Xiang (Olibanum), Ji She Xiang (Cardamomi Semen), Chen Xiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 1 fen); Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 8 fen); She Xiang (Moschus, 0.5 fen); Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Hai Zao (Sargassum), She Gan (Belamcandae Rhizoma), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (each 2 fen); Zhu Li Zhi (Bambusae Succus, 3 he).
Preparation: Add four sheng of water to the herbs, boil until the volume is reduced by half, then add the Bamboo Sap (Zhu Li), and continue boiling to obtain one sheng and two he.
Dosage: For infants aged 100 to 200 days, administer two he per dose; for infants older than 200 days, administer five he per dose.
The *Waitai Beiji* (Emergency Essentials from the Outer Cabinet) treats White Dan.
Ingredients: Zhu Gen (Boehmeriae Niveae Radix, three jin); Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean/Vigna Adzuki Seed, four sheng).
Usage: Decoct the above ingredients in two dou of water. Bathe the infant three to four times daily. (Also effective for all types of Dan toxins.)
