According to the *Shenghui Fang*: Chi Dan (Red Erysipelas) is caused by severe Wind-Toxin, resulting in redness. Initially, rashes appear; large ones are like linked coins, small ones like hemp seeds or beans. Granular eruptions arise on the skin, with a color resembling a rooster's comb, hence it is also called Zhuyu Dan (Cornel Erysipelas).
Formula for treating Chi Dan and toxic swelling in children: Shengma Gao (Cinnamon Twig Ointment).
Ingredients: Chuan Shengma (*Cimicifugae Rhizoma*), Bai Lian (*Ampelopsis Radix*), Lou Lu (*Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba*), Chuan Mangxiao (*Natrii Sulfas Crystallisatus*) (each 1 liang), Huang Qin (*Scutellariae Radix*), Zhi Qiao (*Aurantii Fructus*), Lian Qiao (*Forsythiae Fructus*), She Xian Cao (*Siphonostegiae Herba*) (each 1.5 liang), Zhi Zi Ren (*Gardeniae Semen*), Shuo Die (*Polygoni Multiflori Caulis*) (each 2 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Coarsely crush the herbs. With 1.5 jin of lard, slowly decoct the herbs until they turn red. Strain out the dregs, allow to cool, and store in a porcelain jar. Apply as needed.
For treating sudden onset of Chi Dan on the face and body in children, whether itchy or swollen; if not treated promptly, it can be fatal. This formula is suitable.
Ingredients: Ling Yang Jiao Xie (Antelope Horn Shavings) (8 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Decoct in 5 sheng of water until reduced to 1 sheng. Filter through silk cloth. Mix with 5 liang of refined lard and apply.
Zhang Huan's Shengma Gao: For treating initial stages of Chi Dan, where the flesh feels hot like fire and the color resembles a rooster's comb; also known as Zhuyu Dan.
Ingredients: Chuan Shengma (*Cimicifugae Rhizoma*), Bai Lian (*Ampelopsis Radix*), Lou Lu (*Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba*), Mangxiao (*Natrii Sulfas Crystallisatus*) (each 1 fen), Lian Qiao (*Forsythiae Fructus*), Zhi Zi Ren (*Gardeniae Semen*) (each 0.5 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Finely crush the herbs. With half a jin of lard, slowly decoct the herbs together until red. Strain out the dregs, allow to cool, and apply.
The *Qianjin Fang* states: Whenever infantile erysipelas begins from the back and spreads over the body like fine sand, forming sores overnight, it is named Zhuyu Dan. Grind Chi Xiao Dou (Vigna angularis) into powder and dust it on the affected area. If sores have not yet formed, mix with egg white and apply.
Other treatments for pediatric Chi Dan:
Apply buckwheat flour mixed with vinegar. Mix Hu Fen (Lead Carbonate) with saliva and apply from the outside inward. Apply Duan Tie Shi (Iron Oxide/Scale) mixed with lard. Apply Huang Mi Fen (Yellow Rice Flour) mixed with egg white. Powder the Chi Zu Wu Gong (Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans), mix evenly with Liu Huang (Sulfur), dilute with water, and sweep onto the area with a feather; stop when the head turns scorched black. Take Tian Qie Er Ye (Leaves of Solanum torvum), commonly known as Lao Ya Yan Jing, mash with vinegar, and apply. Wash with salt water made from Liao Zi (Polygoni Orientalis Seed), then apply Liao Cao (Polygoni Orientalis Herba).
The *Qianjin Fang* treats pediatric Huo Dan (Fire Erysipelas), where the color is like cinnabar and the pathogen moves within the skin.
Treatment: Grind Chi Dou (Fermented Soybean) with vinegar into a paste and apply. Frequently apply carp blood. Grind Su Mi (Millet) and apply.
