[Tian] For pediatric fox hernia (Huxian Qi), characterized by asymmetry in scrotal size and intermittent movement of the testis up into the abdomen and down into the scrotum: Roast fourteen spiders until charred, combine with half a liang of Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) herb *Cinnamomi Ramulus* (Guizhi), grind both into a powder. Take eight fen per dose, twice daily, mixed with wine; preparing as honey pills is also acceptable.
Heisan (Black Powder)
*黄连* (Coptidis Rhizoma), *黄芩* (Scutellariae Radix), *大黄* (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), *黄柏* (Phellodendri Cortex) (each two qian).
Burn all ingredients together until "preserving nature" (carbonized but retaining medicinal properties), then grind into an extremely fine powder. Mix with bile from a male pig and honey, then apply externally.
For treating pendulous scrotum (Pianzhui), Fangkui Wan is also suitable. Have the child sit on the soil, and at noon, moxibustion should be applied seven times (seven moxa cones) to the area below the Yintang acupoint on the side of the pendulous scrotum. (The composition of Fangkui Wan is unknown.)
If pediatric pendulous scrotum is not congenital but acquired later, apply moxibustion seven times to the raphe located between the base of the penis and the anterior aspect of the scrotum; this will lead to immediate cure.
[Ming Dynasty Physician] For treating hernia and pendulous testicle resulting from pregnancy and childbirth: Apply moxibustion three times to the cross-shaped wrinkle behind the scrotal seam. (Moxibustion performed in spring heals in summer; moxibustion performed in summer heals in winter.)
Lachasan (Wax Tea Powder) Treats pediatric scrotal sores with pain and discharge of fluid that persist for a long time.
*Lachacha* (Old Tea Leaves), *Wubeizi* (Galla Chinensis) (each five qian); *Nifen* (Calomel) (a small amount).
Grind into powder. First wash the affected area with decoction of green onion and Sichuan pepper, then mix the powder with sesame oil for external application.
Another prescription treats painful scrotal sores.
First wash with decoction of *Chuanjiao* (Sichuan Pepper), *Jingjie* (Schizonepetae Herba), *Huai Zhi* (Sophorae Tonkinensis Ramulus), *Liuzhi* (Salicis Ramulus), and *Shechuangzi* (Cnidii Fructus). Then, grind *Piaoxiao* (Mirabilite) into powder, mix with egg white, and apply.
Another prescription treats sores in the genital area with persistent purulent discharge.
Grind *Wouyu Gu* (Cuttlebone) into fine powder and sprinkle it directly onto the affected area.
Another prescription: Wash the area with decoction of *Zisu Ye* (Perillae Folium) and sprinkle the powdered leaves on the area; this is effective.
Another prescription treats persistent non-healing sores in the pediatric genital area.
Grind *Qingfen* (Calomel) and *Miduoseng* (Litharge) into powder and apply to the lesion. If itching occurs, add *Shanzhizi* (Gardeniae Fructus) and *Hezi* (Chebulae Fructus), burn until preserving nature, grind into powder, and mix with the previous powders. First wash the area with rice water, then apply this medication.
[Xue Ji] The *Neijing* states: The Yangming meridian is the stomach meridian. The stomach is the sea of the six fu organs, and its qi descends. If Yangming qi rebels and cannot follow its proper pathway, sleeplessness ensues. It is also stated: "When the stomach is disharmonious, sleep is restless." The body's Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) travels through the Yang aspects during the day and the Yin aspects at night. Yang governs movement, while Yin governs stillness. When awake, the Hun, Po, Zhi, and Yi are dispersed among the zang-fu organs, manifest in the eyes and ears, and move the limbs, serving as the commander of the body. When asleep, the Shen (Spirit) returns to the five zang organs, performing silent metabolic functions. If Spleen and Stomach qi are robust, the zang-fu organs harmonize, and the essence of food and drink transforms smoothly into peaceful qi. However, if Stomach qi rebels, qi and blood become unsuitable, and the zang-fu organs lose their proper residence, leading to insomnia. One should use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), and Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen). For deficiency-heat in the Liver and Kidney, use Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia). For insufficient Heart Blood, use Zhenzhumu Wan (Mother-of-Pearl Pill). For excessive mental exertion, use Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction). For shortness of spirit and fatigue, use Renshen Yangrong Tang (Ginseng Nourishing the Vigor Decoction). For residual heat after illness, use Suanzaoren Tang. For insomnia due to Gallbladder deficiency, use Renshen Zhuye Tang (Ginseng and Bamboo Leaf Decoction). For restlessness due to Liver Fire, use JiaWei Xiao Chaihu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction). For palpitations causing insomnia, use Sijunzi Tang combined with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Suanzaoren. For night crying, fright, and insomnia, refer to other specific syndromes for detailed analysis.
Zhongjing's Suanzaoren Tang treats insomnia caused by deficiency-emaciation and empty irritability.
*Suanzaoren* (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) (stir-fried, one qian), *Gancao* (Licorice Root), *Zhimu* (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (stir-fried), *Fuling* (Poria), *Xiong* (Ligusticum Rhizome/Wild Chuanxiong), *Shengjiang* (Fresh Ginger) (each five fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
*Benshi Fang*'s Biejia Wan treats insomnia due to Gallbladder deficiency and weakness in the four limbs.
*Biejia* (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), *Suanzaoren* (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) (stir-fried), *Qianghuo* (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), *Huangqi* (Astragali Radix) (stir-fried), *Niuxi* (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) (wine-fried), *Renshen* (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (each one liang), *Wuweizi* (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) (five qian).
Grind into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take thirty to forty pills per dose, washed down with warm wine.
*Shenghui Fang* treats bone-steaming consumptive fever, vexation, and insomnia. Use three qian of Suanzaoren, decoct in water until cooked, then add one clam-shell measure of Dihuang juice (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata juice) and take.
*Benshi Fang*'s Zhenzhumu Wan treats conditions where the Liver and Gallbladder meridians, due to deficiency, internally receive wind pathogens. During sleep, the Hun scatters and fails to remain anchored, presenting with symptoms resembling palpitations and fright.
*Zhenzhu* (Pearl) (separately ground fine, seven qian half), *Danggui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), *Shudihuang* (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) (each one liang half), *Renshen* (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), *Suanzaoren* (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) (stir-fried), *Baiziren* (Biota Orientalis Seed) (each one liang), *Xijiao Xie* (Rhinocerotis Cornu Fragment), *Fushen* (Poria with Hostwood), *Chenxiang* (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), *Longchi* (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi) (ground; each half liang).
Grind into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of adzuki beans, coated with Cindan (Vermilion). Take twenty pills per dose, washed down with plain boiled water. Take one dose at midday and one dose at midnight before bed.
Renshen Zhuye Tang treats insomnia due to empty irritability.
*Renshen* (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), *Zhuye* (Bambusae Folium), *Gancao* (Licorice Root) (each two qian), *Banxia* (Pinelliae Rhizoma), *Xiaomai* (Tritici Fructus), *Maimendong* (Ophiopogonis Radix) (each one qian five fen).
Take two to three qian per dose, add two slices of ginger and a pinch of Jingmi (Rice Grain), decoct in water, and take orally.
Renshen Yangrong Tang (see chapter on Night Sweats) Guipi Tang (see chapter on Palpitations/Fright)
