[Qian Yi] Vomiting immediately after birth in infants is caused by the swallowing of foul and impure substances. The primary treatment formula is Mugua Wan (Quince Pill). For all newborns, it is urgent to clean the mouth thoroughly; otherwise, upon crying, impure matter will be swallowed, leading to various diseases.
[Tian Shi] For vomiting occurring within the first month of life, first administer Zhusha Wan (Cinnabar Pill) to purge. If diarrhea ensues, then use Zhuchen Jian (Cinnabar-Sinking Decoction) to sink and eliminate pathogenic factors, allowing impurities to descend naturally without vomiting.
[Qian Yi] Mugua Wan (Quince Pill)
Ingredients: Fructus Chaenomelis (Mugua), Moschus (Shexiang), Nifen (Calomel/White Mercury Compound), Radix Aucklandiae (Muxiang), Semen Arecae (Binglang) (equal parts).
Preparation: Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Mix with wheat paste to form pills the size of small millet grains. Administer one or two pills per dose, washed down with Licorice Water (Gancao Shui), at any time.
[Xue Ji] Illnesses affecting newborns often arise because the wet nurse fails to regulate her emotions (Seven Emotions: Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Sorrow, Fear, Fright) or cannot restrain her consumption of rich and heavy foods. These pathological factors are transmitted to the infant. One should investigate the cause and treat the mother. The previously mentioned medications may be too harsh for the infant's fragile and tender Zang-Fu organs; practitioners must exercise caution.
Taiping Shenghui Fang Huoxiang San (Agastache Powder): Treats persistent regurgitation and vomiting in infants up to half a month old.
Ingredients: Herba Agastachis (Huoxiang), Radix Asteris (Ziwan) (washed to remove roots and soil, 1 fen each); Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Zhigancao) (stir-fried until reddish-brown, 0.5 liang); Radix Ophiopogonis (Mamendong) (3 fen, heart removed, dried); Cortex Cinnamomi (Guixin) (0.5 fen).
Preparation: Grind into a powder. Take 1 qian per dose, decoct with 1 cup of water until reduced to 0.5 cup. Strain the dregs. Warm the liquid and apply dropwise into the mouth using silk cotton.
Infants who do not urinate upon birth often suffer because, during gestation, the mother indulged in excessive eating, allowing heat-toxin qi to enter the womb. The fetus ingests this blood, resulting in abdominal distension around the umbilicus after birth. If bluish-black discoloration appears around the umbilicus accompanied by puckering of the lips (Kou Cuo), the condition is incurable. If there is no bluish-black color but the infant refuses to suckle, Congru Tang (Scallion-Milk Decoction) is indicated.
Congru Tang (Scallion-Milk Decoction)
Ingredients: Scallion white (Congbai), 3-4 cun long, cut into four pieces. Decoct in half a cup of milk and administer.
Alternative method: Use raw scallion, crush it, mix with human milk, place in the infant's mouth, and allow the infant to suckle again. Swallowing will promote urination.
Douchi Gao (Fermented Soybean Paste)
Ingredients: Black soybeans (Heidou), 1 spoon; Freshwater snails (Tianluo), 19 pieces; Scallions (Cong), a large handful.
Preparation: Crush all ingredients into a paste. Mix with juice from Musa basjoo (Bajiao) and apply to the area below the umbilicus.
Commentary: Observing Danxi’s treatment of the son of Commissioner Zheng Lianshi, who suffered from Lin syndrome (dysuria with pain), reveals that the cause was heat-toxic residue from the father’s ingestion of lower-jiao warming herbs, which remained in the fetus and lodged in the child’s Mingmen (Gate of Life). Treatment with Zixue (Purple Snow) and Radix Phellodendri (Huangbai) pills resulted in the expulsion of gravel-like stones resembling millet and broomcorn, resolving the condition. Thus, for the symptom of non-urination at birth, it is self-evident that one must ascertain the etiology and treat accordingly.
