It refers to the phenomenon of suddenly crying and waking up from sleep. Qian Yi stated: Infantile frightful crying is caused by pathogenic heat invading the Heart; one should calm the mind, and Anshen Wan (Calm Spirit Pill) is the primary formula. (The formula is found in the chapter on the Heart).
Ruxiang Wan (Frankincense Pill) treats internal drawing of wind due to fright, abdominal pain, and frightful crying.
Ruxiang (Boswelliae Resina, 乳香) (half qian), Moyao (Myrrhae Resina, 没药), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum, 沉香) (each one qian), Xieshao (Scorpio, 蝎稍) (fourteen pieces), Jixinbangling (Arecae Semen, 鸡心槟榔) (one and a half qian).
Grind the above into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take two pills each time, administered with decoction of Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, 石菖蒲) and Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis, 钩藤).
Muxiang Wan (Costus Pill) treats the same syndrome as mentioned above.

For the above herbs, first grind Ruxiang (Boswelliae Resina, 乳香) and Moyao (Myrrhae Resina, 没药) separately, then add the powders of the other herbs and mix well. Take a small amount of garlic, grind it finely, and mix with the pill mixture to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take two pills each time, taken down with Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis, 钩藤) decoction.
[Zhang Huan] When an infant is sleeping and suddenly cries out in fright and wakes up, with a red face and dry mouth and tongue, appearing as if possessed by spirits, this is not night crying, but rather wind-heat pathogenic qi invading the Heart. It is named Jingti (Frightful Crying). One should use Niuhuang Gao (Calculus Bovis Ointment) (regularly taken to clear fetal heat).
Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis, 牛黄), Haomuli (Ostreae Concha, 好牡蛎) (calcined and powdered. Each one fen), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 人参), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草) (roasted. Each half liang). The above are all ground into fine powder. Then add Chensha (Cinnabaris, 辰砂) and Xionghuang (Realgar, 雄黄) (each one fen, both finely ground and processed by water flotation), Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum, 龙脑) (half qian).
All the above ingredients are ground together until uniform, mixed with refined honey to form an ointment the size of a cockspur fruit. Take half a grain to one pill each time, dissolved in Bohe Tang (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, 薄荷) decoction, after milk or food intake.
Qingyun San (Blue Cloud Powder)
Shilianxin (Nelumbinis Plumula, 石莲心) (one fen), Tiannanxing (Arisomatis Tenuifolii Bulbus, 天南星) (processed), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, 僵蚕) (select straight ones), Quanxie (Scorpio, 全蝎), Yujin (Curcumae Radix, 郁金) (boiled with Genglei, 皂角. Each one and a half qian), Xionghuang (Realgar, 雄黄) (one qian), Fenshuang (Arsenicum Album, 粉霜) (half qian).
Grind the above into powder. Take one zi or half qian each time, adjusted according to the child's size, administered with honey water.
Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder) from *Shenghui Fang* treats infantile frightful crying.
Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 犀角屑), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis, 钩藤), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 升麻), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草) (roasted. Each one fen), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 人参) (three fen).
Chop the above. Take one qian each time, add one cup of water, boil down to half a cup, and administer according to the child's condition.
Lingyangjiao San (Antelope Horn Powder)
Lingyangjiao (Saiga Tataricae Cornu, 羚羊角屑), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 犀角屑), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草) (roasted), Fushen (Poria, 茯神) (each one fen), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 麦门冬) (half liang).
Crush the above herbs, sieve them into powder. Take one qian each time, add a small cup of water, boil down to half a cup, remove the dregs, and administer in divided doses reduced according to the child's age.
Longchi San (Dragon Tooth Powder) treats infantile frightful crying accompanied by vexatious heat and restless sleep.
Longchi (Dentis Fosilia Mastodontis, 龙齿), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 麦门冬) (each half liang), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 白芍药), Chuan Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 川升麻), Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 川大黄) (fried), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草) (roasted. Each one fen).

Baiziren San (Biota Seed Powder) treats infantile frightful crying, with symptoms resembling being pierced by an object. (Also treats [missing character] crying).
Baiziren (Biotae Semen, 柏子仁) (one liang, crushed, finely sieved into powder).
For the above herb, infants aged one to two years take one zi each time, mixed with rice drink; children aged three to four years take half qian each time, three to four times a day, adjusting according to the child's size.
To treat the five evils in children, frightful crying and sadness. Lingli Jia (Manis Squama, 鲮鲤甲), burned to ash, mixed with wine or water, take one cun bi (a measure for powder). (From *Bencao*).
*Xianren Shuijian* states: After birth, infants often have frightful crying with choked sounds. Quack doctors call this "qi urgency," which is a fatal error. One should use this formula.
Collect the flowers of Huangkui (Abelmoschi Moschatus, 黄葵) in April, dry them in the shade, crush into powder, add Mayac (Natrii Chloridum Crystallisatum, 马牙 - likely referring to Natrii Chloridum or similar mineral salt in context), add four parts of Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 黄连) plus Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, 黄柏). This divine formula of four ingredients has unmatched power.
Mix the above with cold water, take one zi to one qian, and effect will be immediate upon ingestion.
*Yingru* records a formula for treating infants who suddenly cry in fright during night sleep, do not recognize their mother, and shake their heads when called by her.
When infants suddenly cry in fright and do not recognize their mother, it is because they dreamt that their mother abandoned them, believing she truly left, hence crying to find her. Simply have someone hold the child sitting in the dark, and let the mother come in from outside holding a large torch and calling him; the crying will stop. The reason for this is that the mother has left but returned. This method is unknown to the world. *Yinju Xiaofang*.
Another method: Write the characters "Tianxin" (Heavenly Heart) on the fontanelle, and write "Niwan" (Elixir Field) on the Dantian.
