Chao Yuanfang stated: When a child is in the womb, if the mother's nursing and care are improper, she may be injured by wind-cold pathogens. These pathogenic factors enter the uterus and damage the fetus's Zang-Fu organs. Therefore, after birth, the pathogens remain within the infant's abdomen. When the pathogens move and contend with the healthy Qi (Vital Energy), abdominal pain occurs, causing the infant to frown, hold their breath, and cry due to pain.
Gouteng Gao (Uncaria Paste): Treats infants suffering from dry crying (crying without tears) and abdominal pain. (See the formula under "Abdominal Pain").
Zhang Huan stated: During pregnancy, if the mother's care does not follow proper methods, or if she excessively consumes cold foods and drinks, cold Qi enters the infant's intestines and stomach. This weakens the fetal Qi, resulting in an infant who is frail, prone to illness, cries frequently while moving, and is diagnosed as "Fetal Cold Crying." The Yangzang Tang (Nourish Viscera Decoction) should be used.
Yangzang Tang (Nourish Viscera Decoction):
Chuan Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 1 liang), Chen Xiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, half liang), Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos, half liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, half liang), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex, half liang), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, half liang).
Crush and sieve the ingredients into fine powder. Take 1 qian per dose, add 8 fen of water and 2 slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), decoct until 4 fen remains. Strain and let cool to a warm temperature. Drip occasionally into the infant's mouth.
Huangqi San (Astragalus Powder) from *Yingru*: Treats fetal cold in young children, causing abdominal pain and crying.
Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 4 fen), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 4 fen), Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 4 fen), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 4 fen), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 fen), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 6 zhu).
Grind into powder. For a 20-day-old infant, mix with breast milk to form a pill the size of a broad bean; administer three times daily and once at night. For a 50-day-old infant, use a pill the size of a small bean. For a 100-day-old infant, use two small beans' worth. The medicine is warm and non-toxic. If Huang Qi is unavailable, it may be omitted. Administer immediately after birth to prevent the generation of cold Qi and avoid vomiting. Continuous administration for one year yields optimal results. If cold Qi stagnation causes unbearable pain and crying, decoct in water and administer similarly to Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill). The nourishing effect via medication can be dozens of times more effective than standard doses without causing distress.
Shi Shi Liu stated: Treats weak fetal Qi and disharmony of Yin and Yang, leading to incessant day and night crying.
Ru Xiang (Boswelliae Resina, finely ground in water using a mortar), Mo Yao (Myrrhae Resina, finely ground), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 4 qian), Jiang Huang (Curcumae Longae Rhizoma, 4 qian), Mu Bie Zi (Strychni Semen, 20 pieces, shell removed).
First, grind the latter three ingredients into fine powder. Then incorporate the first two ingredients. Mix with refined honey to form pills. For each year of age, administer a pill the size of half a soap pod. Adjust dosage according to circumstances. Dissolve in Gouteng Tang (Uncaria Decoction) and administer at any time. Follow up with Weixiang San.
Weixiang San (Agarwood Powder):
Peng E Zhu (Curcumae Zedoariae Rhizoma, half liang, wrapped in wet paper and roasted), True A Wei (Ferulae Resina, 1 qian).
Dissolve A Wei in warm water first, soak Peng E Zhu for a full day and night. Slice, dry by roasting, and grind into powder. Take half a qian per dose, mix with Zisu Mi Yin (Perilla Seed Drink) on an empty stomach. Once crying subsides slightly, administer Kaiewan.
Kaiewan (Open Stomach Pill):
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, half liang), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix, half liang), Peng E Zhu (Curcumae Zedoariae Rhizoma, half liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, half liang), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, half liang), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1 fen).
Grind into fine powder. Use steamed dough soaked in hot water to form pills the size of millet seeds. Take 5-7 pills per dose on an empty stomach or before meals, administered with Shexiang Tang (Musk Decoction).
Baizhu Danggui Jianwan (Atractylodes and Angelica Decoction Pill): Treats fetal cold abdominal pain, nighttime crying, body stiffness resembling epilepsy, incessant vomiting, sour-smelling diarrhea, and failure to gain weight despite adequate milk intake.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix).
Equal parts, ground into fine powder. Form pills with refined honey, sized like tung tree seeds. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in Muxiang Tang (Aucklandia Decoction).
Liushen San (Six Gods Powder): Treats abdominal pain with crying, cyanotic complexion, cold breath, cold limbs, crying with bent waist, diarrhea, and refusal to suckle.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, half liang), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, half liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, half liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 1 liang), Bian Dou (Dolichoris Semen, stir-fried, 1 liang).
Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose with 2 slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and one Jujubae Fructus, decocted in water. Another prescription uses Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), and Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) at 2.5 qian each; Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), and Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) at 1 qian each. Grind into powder, take 2 qian per dose, decoct in water, and administer frequently.
