San Sheng Wan (Three Sages Pill): Treats various types of malaria, regardless of duration.
Squama Manis (Pangolin Scale) (soaked thoroughly in hot water, scales removed, crushed, and slow-roasted over hot ashes in a pan until scorched yellow) Radix Dichroae (Jigu Changshan) Semen Arecae Cum Medulla (Jixin Binglang) (these two ingredients, each one tael, thinly sliced and sun-dried).
The above ingredients are sun-dried again, ground into fine powder, mixed with paste made from boiled glutinous rice flour to form pills the size of mung beans. While still moist, coat them with Zhudan (Red Cinnabar), and dry in the shade.
Take 30 to 50 pills per dose. Administer one dose on an empty stomach with wine the evening before the expected attack; for severe cases, administer two doses. If the condition persists despite prolonged treatment, switch to Qu Nie Dan.
Er Xian Yin (Two Immortals Decoction): Treats the same conditions as above.
Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) (stalks removed, harvested on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, sun-dried, dosage: two taels) Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (bark removed, half a tael; both ingredients chopped, roasted, and ground into fine powder).
Take one qian per dose. Mix with cool wine and take before the onset of chills and fever, or alternatively, take with wine the evening before. Add Xiangru Ye (Elsholtziae Haplostachys Folium, two taels) and Haocha Ya (Good Tea Buds, half a tael), grind together into powder. This is also known as Zhan Xie Yin (Evil-Slaying Drink). It treats the same indications using the same method, and is particularly effective for summerheat malaria. The administration method is the same as above.
Qu Nie Dan (Malaria-Expelling Pill): Treats malaria that has persisted for a long time without improvement.
Changshan (Radix Dichroae, finely cut, two taels) Wumei (Fructus Mume, with pits, one tael, thinly sliced) Zhudan (Cinnabaris, high quality, half a tael).
Process separately: roast Wumei on roof tiles; sun-dry or roast Changshan. Grind all three together into fine powder. Make pills the size of hemp seeds using glutinous rice flour paste. Take 30 to 50 pills per dose. Administer on an empty stomach with cool wine before the attack, or with wine the evening before. Severe cases: two doses; mild cases: one dose. Avoid chicken, wheat products, mutton, cold/raw foods and beverages, and toxic substances.
