[Xue Ji] For burns and scalds, if fever, thirst, and scanty, dark, or painful urination occur, this indicates internal heat; use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) with added Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao), and Licorice Root (Gancao). If the flesh is not yet necrotic but painful, this indicates heat-toxin accumulation; use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) with added Ligusticum Rhizome (Chuanxiong), Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui), Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi), and Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao). If the flesh is already necrotic but has not ulcerated, this indicates deficiency of qi and blood; use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) with added Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui) and Astragalus Root (Huangqi), applied externally with Danggui Ointment, or a mixture of Cinnabar Leaf Powder (Baiye Mo) and beeswax oil rubbed until the area turns white, at which point new flesh will naturally grow. In cases of near-death due to smoke inhalation, administering raw radish juice will restore consciousness. If injured by burns or scalds after eating, presenting with fever, abdominal distension, anorexia, and convulsions as complications, treatment should refer to the section on Food Stagnation and Convulsions.
Shenxiao Danggui Gao (Miraculous Angelica Ointment): Treats burns, scalds, and other sores. Regardless of whether the sore has ulcerated, if the flesh is injured but not yet gangrenous, application leads to spontaneous healing; if the flesh is already necrotic, application causes the dead tissue to slough off spontaneously, facilitating rapid growth of new flesh. Rubbing until the flesh color gradually becomes white ensures complete elimination of toxins and fastest regeneration. This is because Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui), Rehmannia Root (Sheng Dihuang), Sesame Oil (Mayou), and Beeswax (Er La) all promote flesh regeneration, relieve pain, nourish blood, and repair tendons, harmonizing well with new tissue growth.
Ingredients: Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui) and Rehmannia Root (Sheng Dihuang) (each 1 liang), Sesame Oil (Mayou) (4 liang), Yellow Beeswax (Huangla) (1 liang, white variety preferred, use only 0.5 liang).
Preparation: First, fry the Angelica Sinensis Root and Rehmannia Root in the oil until browned, then filter out the dregs. Melt the beeswax, allow it to cool slightly, stir uniformly, and the ointment is ready. Apply to the affected area and cover with fine paper. It is particularly effective for back carbuncles, abscesses, and lacerations from beating that have ulcerated. When necrotic flesh is about to detach but remains slightly attached, it is advisable to cut it away with a sharp knife, as necrotic tissue contains toxins; delaying removal harms new flesh. Once all necrotic tissue is removed, prompt application is crucial, as new flesh is highly susceptible to wind and cold, which must not be neglected.
Ruxiang Dingtong San (Frankincense Pain-Relieving Powder): Treats injuries and pain from any ulcerating sores.
Ingredients: Frankincense (Ruxiang) and Myrrh (Moyao) (each 0.5 liang), Talcum (Huashi) (1 liang), Borneol (Bingpian) (0.1 qian).
Preparation: Grind into a fine powder. Apply to the affected area; pain ceases immediately.
Zhu Ti Tang (Pig Trotter Decoction): Treats all carbuncles, abscesses, and lacerations from beating that have ulcerated; reduces swelling and toxicity, removes foul tissue, and moistens the wound edges.
Ingredients: Angelica Dahurica Root (Baizhi), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui), Honeycomb (Fengfang - those with many larvae are best), Notopterygium Rhizome (Qianghuo), Red Peony Root (Chishaoyao), Raw Licorice Root (Sheng Gancao) (each 0.5 liang).
Preparation: Use one pig trotter, add 4-5 bowls of water, boil until cooked, skim off the fat, take the clear broth, add the aforementioned herbs, boil briefly, filter out the dregs, and wash the area with the warm liquid, followed by applying plaster.
Formulas for Burns and Scalds:
Soak Abutilon Flower (Huang Shu Kui Hua) in oil and apply the oil to the affected area. Alternatively, dry Abutilon Flowers, grind them into powder, and mix with sesame oil for topical application.
Another Formula:
Grind Lead Carbonate (Dingfen) into an extremely fine powder, mix with lard from the twelfth lunar month, and apply to the affected area.
Another Formula:
Mash Castor Bean Flesh (Bimazi Rou), mix with equal parts Clam Shell Powder (Ge Fen); if too dry, add a small amount of sesame oil, blend, and apply to the affected area.
