巢氏论滞颐之病，是小儿多涎唾流出，渍于颐下。此由脾冷液多故也，脾之液
为涎，脾气冷不能收制其津液，故冷涎流出，滞渍于颐也。
按∶《内经》云舌纵涎下，皆属于热。而此专属脾冷，亦一偏之见。张涣处冷
热各二方，为得之，然以流出为冷，不流出为热，恐亦未确。
〔张涣〕温脾丹 治脾冷病。
丁香 木香（各一两） 半夏（一两，用生姜六两同捣细，炒令黄） 青橘皮 白术 干姜（微炒。各半两）
上件捣，罗为细末，炼蜜和，如黍米大。每服十粒，米饮下，量儿大小加减。
温胃散 治脾冷流涎。
丁香（一两） 肉豆蔻 半夏（白矾水浸，炒黄） 白术 干姜 甘草 人参（去芦头。各半两）
上件捣，罗为细末，每服一钱，水八分，入生姜二片，煎五分，去滓温服，食前。
金朱丹 治脾热多涎。
金箔（二十片，研） 朱砂（细研，水飞） 半夏（汤浸七遍，取末） 天南星（牛胆制，取末。各一两） 白茯
苓（取末） 石膏（细研，水飞。各半两）
上件都拌匀，再细研，用生姜自然汁和如黍米大。每服十粒，煎人参汤下，乳后。
牛蒡丹
牛蒡子（一两） 郁金 川朴硝 枳壳（麸炒，去穣） 皂子（炒黄。各半两）
上件捣，罗为细末，用生姜汁打白面糊和如黍米大。每服十粒，煎人参汤吞下，量儿大小加减。
《千金》治小儿口中涎出方
以白羊屎纳口中。
又方
以东行牛口中沫，涂口中及颐上。
又方
桑白汁涂之，瘥。
Chao Yuanfang discussed the disease of *Zhiyi* (Drooling), which refers to infants and young children having excessive saliva flowing out, soaking the area under the chin. This is caused by coldness in the Spleen leading to excessive fluids. The fluid of the Spleen is saliva; when Spleen Qi is cold, it cannot control and retain body fluids, thus causing cold saliva to flow out and stagnate, soaking the chin.
Commentary: The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states that "protrusion of the tongue with drooling" all belongs to Heat patterns. To attribute this exclusively to Spleen Cold is also a one-sided view. Zhang Huan provided two formulas for Cold and two for Heat, which is appropriate; however, assuming that flowing saliva indicates Cold and non-flowing indicates Heat is likely inaccurate.
[Zhang Huan] Wenspi Dan (Warming Spleen Pill) treats diseases of Spleen Cold.
Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos, Clove), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, Aucklandia Root) (each 1 liang); Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, Pinellia Tuber) (1 liang, pounded finely together with 6 liang of Shengjiang [Fresh Zingiberis Rhizoma, Fresh Ginger], stir-fried until yellow); Qingju pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, Green Tangerine Peel), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, Dried Ginger) (lightly stir-fried. each 0.5 liang).
Pound the above ingredients, sieve into fine powder, mix with refined honey, and form pills the size of millet seeds. Take 10 pills per dose, swallowed with rice water, adjusting the dosage according to the child's age and size.
Weiwisan (Stomach-Warming Powder) treats drooling due to Spleen Cold.
Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos, Clove) (1 liang); Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen, Nutmeg), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, Pinellia Tuber) (soaked in Bai Fan [Alumen, Alum] water, stir-fried until yellow), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, Dried Ginger), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Licorice Root), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, Ginseng Root) (remove the rhizome head. each 0.5 liang).
Pound the above ingredients, sieve into fine powder. Take 1 qian per dose, add 8 fen of water and 2 slices of Shengjiang [Fresh Zingiberis Rhizoma, Fresh Ginger], decoct until 5 fen remains, strain, and take warm before meals.
Jinzhu Dan (Golden Cinnabar Pill) treats excessive saliva due to Spleen Heat.
Jinbo (Folium Aurum, Gold Leaf) (20 pieces, ground finely); Zhusha (Cinnabaris, Cinnabar) (ground finely, processed by water flotation); Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, Pinellia Tuber) (soaked in boiling water seven times, take the powder); Tian Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma Preparatum, Prepared Arisaema Rhizome) (processed with ox bile, take the powder. each 1 liang); Bai Fu Ling (Poria, Poria Cocos) (take the powder), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, Gypsum) (ground finely, processed by water flotation. each 0.5 liang).
Mix the above ingredients thoroughly, grind again finely, use natural juice of Shengjiang [Fresh Zingiberis Rhizoma, Fresh Ginger] to bind them into pills the size of millet seeds. Take 10 pills per dose, swallowed with decoction of Renshen [Ginseng Radix, Ginseng Root] Tang (Decoction), after breastfeeding or milk intake.
Niubang Dan (Arctii Pill)
Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus, Burdock Fruit), Yujin (Curcumae Radix, Turmeric Root), Chuan Pomiao (Natrii Sulfas, Sodium Sulfate), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus, Bitter Orange Fruit) (stir-fried with bran, remove the pith), Zao Ren (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina, Chinese Honeylocust Thorn) (stir-fried until yellow. each 0.5 liang).
Pound the above ingredients, sieve into fine powder, use Shengjiang [Fresh Zingiberis Rhizoma, Fresh Ginger] juice mixed with white flour paste to bind into pills the size of millet seeds. Take 10 pills per dose, swallowed with decoction of Renshen [Ginseng Radix, Ginseng Root] Tang (Decoction), adjusting the dosage according to the child's age and size.
Qianjin Fang (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) formula for treating drooling in children:
Place Yangbai shi (Excrement of White Goat, Capra Hircus Excrement) into the mouth.
Another formula:
Apply the foam from the mouth of an east-facing cow to the inside of the mouth and the chin.
Another formula:
Apply juice from Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex, Mulberry Bark) to the affected area; the condition will heal.
