When the fetus is in the womb, if the mother frequently suffers from palpitations due to fright, or consumes food with heat and toxicity, within ten days after birth, the infant often presents with deficiency phlegm (Phlegm), rapid breathing with chest fullness, closed eyelids with red sclerae, swollen eye bags, lethargy with frequent yawning, muttering sounds, generalized high fever, dark red urine, constipation, and occasional frightful irritability. This is caused by heat accumulation in the womb or the mistaken administration of warm tonics, leading to heat retention internally that steams and disturbs the fetal qi (Vital Energy). Consequently, these symptoms arise. If left untreated for a long time, conditions such as thrush (Oral Candidiasis), double tongue, wooden tongue, and purple-red carbuncles may develop. One should first administer Mutong San (Wood Vine Decoction) to the mother to be ingested via breast milk, thereby unblocking Heart qi (Vital Energy) and resolving irritability and heat. Subsequently, wash both eyes with Sisheng San (Four Holy Ones Powder) using warm water. Once the eyes open, administer Dihuang Gao (Rehmannia Paste), Tianzhu Huang San (Bamboo Resin Powder), Niubang Tang (Arctium Decoction), and Danggui San (Angelica Decoction), which should also be taken by the mother. For any congenital diseases, do not seek rapid results; instead, allow the wet nurse to take medicine so that its efficacy passes through the milk to gradually resolve the condition. This approach is nearly foolproof. If cold-natured drugs are used directly to attack the pathogen, other diseases will inevitably arise. The wet nurse must still avoid spicy foods, alcohol, and wheat products to facilitate recovery and prevent recurrence.
Shengdi Huang Tang (Raw Rehmannia Root Decoction) [from Tang Shi]: Treats infants who, while in the womb, were affected by maternal heat or excessive consumption of wine, wheat, and other heat-toxic substances, causing heat to transmit to the fetus. Symptoms upon birth include red face, closed eyes, generalized high fever, incessant crying, and oral heat feeling like boiling water, indicating signs of fetal heat (Fetal Heat).
Ingredients: Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Chi Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Gua Lou Gen (Radix Trichosanthis).
All ingredients are equal in dosage, cut into pieces. Take 0.5 liang per dose, add one zhan of water, and decoct until six-tenths remains. The postpartum woman may also take this, applying a small amount to the infant's mouth.
Mutong San (Akebia Decoction): Mainly treats upper jiao (Upper Burner) heat in infants, urinary obstruction, and various sores and erysipelas. Mother and child take it together.
Ingredients: Mu Tong (Caulis Akebiae), Di Fu Zi (Fructus Kochiae) and Xu Zhong Cao (Herba Siegesbeckiae) (each 0.5 liang), Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Chi Fu Ling (Poria Cocos with Red Skin) (each 3 qian), Qu Mai (Herba Dianthi), Hua Shi (Talcum), Shan Zhi Zi (Fructus Gardeniae), Che Qian Zi (Semen Plantaginis), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae) (each 2.5 qian).
Add one zhong of water and three stems of Deng Xin Cao (Medulla Junci), or add Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) and decoct together.
Nai Ru Fa (Method for Modulating Milk):
Ingredients: Zhu Ling (Poria Cocos, remove black skin), Ze Xie (Rhizoma Alismatis), Chi Fu Ling (Poria Cocos with Red Skin, remove peel), Tian Hua Fen (Radix Trichosanthis), Yin Chen (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae), Sheng Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae), Shan Zhi Zi (Fructus Gardeniae, remove shell).
Crush into powder. Decoct in water. After meals, have the wet nurse express and discard old milk, then take this medicine.
Gan Dou Tang (Licorice and Black Bean Decoction): Treats pediatric fetal heat.
Ingredients: Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 qian), Hei Dou (Sojaes Semen Nigrum, 2 qian), Dan Zhu Ye (Folium Bambusae, 7 stems).
Cut into pieces. Add one zhong of water and seven stems of Deng Xin Cao, decoct, and take at any time.
Sisheng San (Four Holy Ones Powder): Mainly treats infants suffering from fetal heat-toxin, resulting in inability to open eyes after birth.
Ingredients: Deng Xin Cao (Medulla Junci), Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Qin Pi (Cortex Fraxini), Mu Zei (Equiseti Herba), Zao Zi (Fructus Jujubae) (each 0.5 liang).
Decoct one zhong of water, clarify, and remove dregs. Wash the eyes whenever possible; they will naturally open. Afterwards, administer Dihuang Gao (Rehmannia Paste).
Dihuang Gao (Rehmannia Paste): Treats fetal heat.
Ingredients: Shan Zhi Ren (Semen Gardeniae), Lv Dou Fen (Farina Phaseoli Radiati) (each 1.5 liang), Fen Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, 6 qian).
Grind into powder. Mash 1.5 liang of fresh Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae) thoroughly, mix well with 1.5 liang of good honey. Store in a thin clay vessel and boil in a copper pot until it becomes a paste resembling thin porridge. Cool, then mix in the previously prepared powders. Grind again in a mortar until uniform. Form into pills the size of Euphorbia seed (Qian Shi). Dissolve half a pill in Maidong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction) and take orally.
Tianzhu Huang San (Bamboo Resin Powder) (see Thrush); Niubang Tang (Arctium Decoction) (see Throat Disorders); Danggui San (Angelica Decoction) (see Tidal Fever); Qingwei San (Stomach-Clearing Powder) (see Miscellaneous Diseases - Teeth Section).
