The infant's umbilicus is swollen and damp, failing to heal for a long time. If this persists until one hundred days of age, it becomes critical and requires immediate treatment. The *Cranium and Fontanelle Classic* (*Luxin Jing*) prescribes the following formula for Umbilical Dampness: Calcined Alum (Kufan) and Fossilized Bones (Longgu), ground into powder, with a small amount of Moschus (Shexiang) added. Wipe the umbilicus until dry before application, and avoid wind. Apply Ash of Crimson Silk (Jiangboshi) to the umbilicus. One dried toad (Gan Xama) and one oyster shell (Muli), calcined to ash and finely ground, applied sparingly to the umbilicus two or three times daily until healed.
Fengqi Powder (Feng Qi San)
Ash of Steamer Band (Zengdaishi), Ash of Tangled Hair (Luanshahui), Ash of White Ginger (Baijiangzhi), Ash of Red Silk (Hongboshi) [Note: These four ashes must not be mixed with other ashes], Rhizoma Arisaematis (Nanxing), Radix Peoniae Rubrae (Bailian), Radix Angelicae Sinensis Head (Danggui Tou), Semen Phaseoli Urdos (Chixiaodou), Galla Chinensis (Wubeizi), Sanguis Draconis (Xuejie), Fossilized Bones (Longgu), Halloysitum Rubrum (Chishizhi), Cuttlebone (Haipiaoxiao), Carbonaceous Matter from Hundred Herbs (Baicaoshuang), Lacca (Yanzhi) [Each half qian].
Grind all ingredients together into an extremely fine powder. If the area is moist, apply dry powder; if dry, smear with refined sesame oil. Avoid bathing the umbilicus with raw water.
Another Formula
Ash of Red Cotton (Hongmianshi), Ash of Yellow Ox Manure (Huangniufenhui), Fossilized Bones (Longgu), Ash of Hair (Fahui), Dry Lacca (Ganyanzhi) [Each half qian].
Grind into an extremely fine powder. Apply dry powder whether moist or dry; if dry, smear with refined sesame oil on the umbilicus.
Another Formula: For treating weeping fluid from the umbilicus that does not dry.
Radix Angelicae Sinensis Head (Danggui Tou) [Remove rhizome, one qian], Cotton [The band used to tie the umbilicus, calcined to ash, one qian, or old cotton].
Grind into an extremely fine powder, add a small amount of Moschus (Shexiang) equivalent to one zi, and grind together. Apply sparingly as a dry powder to the umbilicus.
Qian Yi's Bomi Powder (Qianyi Bomisan)
Radix Phellodendri (Huangbai), Soot from Cauldron Bottom (Fuxiamo), Ash of Tangled Hair (Luanshahui) [Equal parts].
Grind into a fine powder. Apply a small amount each time.
Zhang Huan's Huafen Powder (Zhang Huan Hufen San)
Lead Carbonate (Hufen), Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) [Calcined to ash], Halloysitum Album (Baishizhi) [Calcined to retain efficacy].
Equal parts, ground into an extremely fine powder and mixed thoroughly. Use one zi to half a qian, apply to the umbilicus frequently.
[Zhuang] Qi Umbilicus: The umbilicus swells like a chestnut, appearing flaccid, soft, and painful. Apply Bamboo Sap (Zhuli) several times daily until subsided. For infant umbilical dampness spreading and ulcerating, crush rotten straw from dilapidated houses into powder and apply frequently; this is effective.
Master Chao stated: This occurs because bathwater enters the umbilicus during bathing, or urine wets the diaper, causing the umbilicus to become damp, swell, rot, and form sores. Alternatively, after the cord detaches, it may be attacked by Wind Pathogens, which enter the meridians and collaterals, leading to Wind Epilepsy (Fengxian). If the umbilicus remains swollen and wet, prolonged duration may lead to convulsions. The *Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up My Sleeve* (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang*) recommends applying calcined dry toad ash, three to four times daily, which is excellent. (*Taiping Shenghui Fang* includes Calcined Alum.)
Yigong Powder (Yigong San): Treats sores in the umbilicus.
Fossilized Bones (Longgu), Leaves of Mint (Boheye), Fructus Cnidii (Shechuangzi) [Each two qian], Calomelas (Qingfen) [Half qian].
Grind into an extremely fine powder. Apply sparingly as a dry powder to the umbilicus.
Longgu Powder (Longgu San): Treats sores in the umbilicus.
Fossilized Bones (Longgu), Calomelas (Qingfen) [Each half qian], Radix Coptidis (Huanglian) [Remove roots, one and a half qian].
Grind into an extremely fine powder. Apply sparingly as a dry powder to the umbilicus.
For infants past one month of age who cry and have bleeding from the umbilicus: Use Halloysitum Album (Baishizhi), stir-fried and ground into an extremely fine powder, applied as a dry powder.
Formula for treating umbilical sores that do not heal due to external Wind invasion after cord cutting:
Alumen (Baimingfan), Fossilized Bones (Longgu) [Each half qian].
Grind into an extremely fine powder. Apply as a dry powder.
Zhang Huan's Jinhuan Powder (Zhang Huan Jinhuang San): Treats chronic umbilical sores that fail to heal, where Wind Pathogens transmit to the meridians and collaterals, transforming into Epilepsy (Xianji).
Rhizoma Coptidis (Chuan Huanglian) [Two and a half qian], Lead Carbonate (Hufen), Fossilized Bones (Longgu) [Calcined to ash, each one qian].
Grind each ingredient separately, then mix and grind into a fine powder. Apply a small amount to the umbilicus frequently.
