Yinchen Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction): Treats Yangming disease (disease of the Yangming channel) presenting with fever and sweating, indicating that heat is venting outward but not fully resolved. If there is only head sweating, no body sweating, and sweat stops at the neck, accompanied by dysuria (difficult urination) and thirst for fluids, this indicates stagnant heat trapped in the interior, leading to jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). In Shanghan (Cold Damage) disease lasting seven or eight days, if the body is yellow like an orange peel, with dysuria and slight abdominal fullness, this formula is indicated.
Yinchen Hao (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, tender parts, 1 liang), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 3 qian ban), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, large ones, 3 pieces).
Crush into a powder. Boil with one da zhen (large cup) of water, first decoct Yinchen Hao until the volume is halved, then add the other two herbs, decoct until eight fen remain, strain, and take warm. Take three times daily. Urine will flow freely like soap pod juice, appearing bright red; abdominal fullness will decrease overnight, and the jaundice will exit via the urine. Dosage should be adjusted according to the patient's size.
Zhizi Bopi Tang (Gardenia and Phellodendron Bark Decoction): Treats jaundice and fever caused by Shanghan.
Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, 8 pieces), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, half liang, honey-fried).
Crush into a powder. Take 2 qian per dose, boil with one zhan (cup) of water until six fen remain, strain, and take warm.
Xijiao San (Rhino Horn Powder): Treats pediatric jaundice where the entire body turns yellow.
Xijiao (Rhino Cornu, sliced, 1 liang), Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Gange (Puerariae Radix, dried), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, fresh, each half liang), Hanshuishi (Calcitritum, 7 qian ban).
Crush into a powder, decoct with water, and take. Another method: for sudden onset of jaundice in children with yellowing of the face, eyes, skin, and muscles, crush Genken (Puerariae Radix) to extract juice and mix with honey to take.
Lianqiao Chixiaodou Tang (Forsythia and Adzuki Bean Decoction): Treats pediatric Shanghan with jaundice and fever.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Chixiaodou (Adzuki Bean), Shengzibai pi (Morus Albae Cortex, fresh, each 2 liang), Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Semen, 41 pieces), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 12 pieces).
Crush into a powder, decoct with clear water. Another method: crush fresh wheat seedlings to extract juice and take, which yields immediate results.
Luo Qianfu treated a child who, in late summer, had steaming fever, chest and diaphragm oppression and fullness, skin yellow like soaked oranges, yellow sclera, weak sinews and bones unable to walk or stand. This was due to summer heat combined with dampness, steaming and binding in the collaterals, penetrating to the bone marrow, causing disharmony of Zang-Fu Qi. Thus, Spleen Earth overacted on Heart Fire, and damp-heat combined to form this disease. Heart fire excess causes steaming fever and chest/diaphragm fullness; Spleen dampness excess causes skin yellow like soaked oranges. Excess Qi attacks what it controls and bullies what it does not control, leading to Kidney and Liver pathogen invasion, resulting in weak sinews and bones and inability to walk. The Neijing states: "Spleen heat manifests as yellow complexion and muscle twitching." It also states: "Damp-heat leads to Wei syndrome (flaccidity syndrome)." These words are indeed true. As stated, "The son can make the mother full"; when full, drain the son. When Spleen Earth returns to its proper position, Kidney Water is restored, and Heart Fire calms naturally. Furthermore, the Neijing says: "In treating Wei syndrome, focus solely on the Yangming." This refers to this case. Use Jiajian Xiehuang San (Modified Draining Yellow Powder) as the main treatment.
Jiajian Xiehuang San Formula: This medicine drains Spleen Earth heat, restores Kidney Water, and descends Heart Fire.
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, each 5 fen), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Fuling (Poria, each 3 fen), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 2 fen).
Chop finely, combine as one dose, boil with one zhan of water until six fen remain, strain, and take slightly warm after meals. After one dose, symptoms reduce by half; take again after five days for complete recovery.
The Classics state: "For the ruler of the Earth position, drain with bitter." Also: "The Spleen dislikes dampness; urgently eat bitter to dry it." Therefore, use the bitter-cold properties of Huanglian and Yinchen to remove damp-heat as the Sovereign herb. "The Kidney desires firmness; urgently eat bitter to firm it," thus use the bitter-pungent-cold property of Huangbai to strengthen sinews and bones as the Minister herb. "Damp-heat causes vexation; drain with bitter," thus use the bitter-cold properties of Huangqin and Shanzhi to stop vexation and fullness as the Assistant herb. "Dampness flooding internally; drain with bland," thus use the sweet-bland properties of Fuling and Zexie to promote urination and guide out dampness as the Envoy herb.
