[Yanshan] For newborn infants, if nasal congestion suddenly occurs on the third day, fifth day, sixth day, or at one month of age, making breastfeeding difficult and requiring mouth breathing, it is mostly due to the wet nurse sleeping soundly without supporting the infant's head, causing her exhaled breath to blow onto the infant's fontanelle; or due to bathing with water of uneven temperature, failing to avoid wind-cold pathogens, thereby causing nasal congestion. It is advisable to apply Tongguan Ointment externally and administer Xiaofeng San internally. If there are symptoms of palpitations and fever, Du Bohe San should be administered. Tongguan Ointment consists of equal parts of Bai Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Zhuya Zaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Xiangfuzi (Cyperi Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) ground into powder, mixed with scallion white and applied to the fontanelle for excellent results.
Xiaofeng San: Treats fetal heat and fetal cold, and also addresses various wind pathogens attacking the head and eyes causing dizziness and pain, stiffness and pain in the neck and back, vertigo, nasal congestion with frequent sneezing, skin numbness, pruritic sores, urticaria, and pediatric deficient wind.
Ingredients: Fuling (Poria), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix [deprived of radix]), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus [stir-fried]), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum [deprived of mouthparts and claws]), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma [roasted]), Nongpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex [processed]), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium [deprived of albedo]). All ingredients in equal proportions.
Usage: Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Take 5 fen each time, mixed with tea liquor, or alternatively with Bohe Tang. For acute or chronic convulsions, mix with Ruxiang (Olibanum) and Jingjie decoction. Alternatively, add Xionghuang (Realgar), named Xiongfeng San.
Bohe Tang: Treats nasal obstruction, as well as cold damage complicated by fright and extreme heat transformation fevers.
Ingredients: Bohe Ye (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) (5 qian), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Quanxie (Scorpio), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba [deprived of nodes]), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus [stir-fried]). Each 1 qian; Tianzhu Huang (Calamusi Folium), Baifuzi (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Rhizoma [roasted]). Each 2.5 qian.
Usage: Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Mix with Bohe Tang. If extreme heat generates wind, add a small amount of Zhuli (Bambusae Sap). Another prescription contains Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Taixiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Fuling (Poria), but excludes Quanxie (Scorpio), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Tianzhu Huang (Calamusi Folium), and Baifuzi (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Rhizoma).
[Zhang Huan] Xinyi Gao
Ingredients: Xinyi Ye (Magnoliae Flos [washed and dried]) (1 liang), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Xiang Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix). Each half liang.
Preparation: Crush the above ingredients and sift into fine powder. Separately, take Xingren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen [soaked in hot water, peeled and crushed]). Combine all ingredients with Yang Sui (Ovis Medulla) and Zhu Zhi (Suis Adeps) (each 2 liang). Slowly boil in a stone vessel until it becomes a reddish-yellow ointment. Allow to cool, then add Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum) and Shexiang (Moschus) (each 1 qian), mix well. Apply a small amount into the nose each time. For nursing infants with nasal congestion caused by the wet nurse's breath blowing on the fontanelle, apply only to the fontanelle.
"Zhang Jifeng Fang" treats open fontanelles that fail to close and nasal obstruction.
Ingredient: Select one large Tiannanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), slightly roasted and ground into powder. Mix with light vinegar, apply to red silk, and paste onto the fontanelle. Heat with hands and frequently moxa/iron over the area.
Zhuang Shi's prescription for pediatric nasal congestion
Ingredient: Huaiye (Sophorae Flavescentis Folium) ground into powder. Mix with the wet nurse's saliva, apply thickly to the fontanelle.
[Ji Shi] Congxian Gao: Treats infants aged three to five days with nasal congestion, rapid breathing, and incessant crying during feeding.
Ingredients: Congye (Allii Fistulosi Folium), Zhuya Zaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit [ground into powder, peeled]). Seven stalks of each.
Preparation: Mash thoroughly and mix with the Zaojiao powder to form an ointment. Apply to the anterior fontanelle until cured.
