According to *Ben Shi Fang* (Handbook of Effective Prescriptions): Ge Zhichuan stated that "Gui Zhu" (Ghost Transmission) is one type of the "Wu Shi" (Five Corpse) diseases. Furthermore, regarding the harm caused by various ghostly pathogens, their variations range from thirty-six to ninety-nine types. Generally, they cause the patient to feel dripping and heavy, silently unaware of the specific source of suffering, yet feeling aversion everywhere. Over years and months, this gradually leads to stagnation and eventually death. It spreads to others, even wiping out entire families. If one perceives these signs, immediate treatment with one piece of Otter Liver (Lutrae Corium), dried in the shade and powdered, taken orally with water in a dose of "Fang Cun Qi" (approximately 2-3 grams), three times daily, is effective; if not effective, continue taking it. This prescription is miraculous. *Zi Ting Fang* states: Both Chuan Shi (Transmission Corpse) and Fu Shi (Hidden Corpse) involve worms. One must fumigate the patient's hand with Frankincense (Ruxiang, 乳香). Then, have the patient hold their palm upward, cover it with a cloth, and fumigate for a long time. Afterward, hairs about one cun long will grow on the back of the hand. If white and yellow, it is treatable; if red, slightly difficult; if blue-black, fatal. If no hair grows after prolonged fumigation, it is not this condition but rather ordinary Deficiency Consumption (Xu Lao, 虚劳). Another method involves burning Benzoin (Anxi Xiang, 安息香) until smoke emerges and having the patient inhale it. If the patient coughs incessantly, it is Chuan Shi; if not, it is not. *Zhi Zhi Fang* states: Zhai Chong (Tuberculosis Worms) devour the human bone marrow, leading to exhaustion of blood and essence, with many cases being incurable. If people protect their Yuan Qi (Primal Qi, 元气) and nourish blood and essence during normal times, Zhai disease cannot spread. Only those who indulge in lust and excessive sexual activity, causing internal depletion of essence and blood, allowing pathogenic qi to invade externally, are affected. Not only men suffer, but women are also not spared. However, those with Qi deficiency and weak spleen/stomach are most susceptible to entering the door of Laborious Consumption (Lao Zhai, 劳瘵). Visiting funerals or mourning houses, one can contract the disease through clothes and utensils that carry the pathogen into the void. Occasionally, a woman enters the room, sees the person, and the patient's longing allows the "Labor Qi" to enter. After long infection, it inevitably transforms into worms. The treatment principle generally prioritizes nourishing blood and essence, with expelling worms as secondary. Benzoin, Styrax, Asafoetida, Musk, Rhinoceros Horn, Cinnabar, and Realgar are indeed drugs that drive away evil qi, but Tian Ling Gai (Human Skull Cap, 天灵盖) must also be used among them. Because Shi Zhu (Corpse Transmission) is ghostly qi, latent and unarisen, it causes lingering illness. Treating it with the occipital bone of a dry corpse makes the ghostly qi flee, no longer attaching to humans, thus curing the disease. Besides these, Tiger Tooth Bone and Carp Head are also things that eat humans, serving as substitutes for the occipital bone. In summary, before applying treatments, one should first establish the foundation with Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome, 川芎) and Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 当归). First use Xiong Gui Xue Yu San (Atractylodes, Angelica and Hair Powder) while swallowing Beidou Fu (Big Dipper Talisman), then use Bie Jia Sheng Xi San (Tartar Shell and Raw Rhinoceros Powder) to extract worms. Su You discussed: The symptoms of Chuan Shi begin in the Kidney. Initially, the two calves ache, the waist and back are stiff, walking and standing feel weak, appetite decreases, ears ring like wind, nocturnal emission occurs, and there is sweating and weakness in the yin area. After the Kidney is affected, it transmits to the Heart. When the Heart first receives the pathogen, the patient feels startled at night, often fearful and palpitations, with a sense of hanging anxiety, shallow breathing, dreams of deceased relatives, occasional night sweats, loss of taste, mouth ulcers, heart irritability and heat, desire to lie down, symptoms lighter in the morning and heavier in the evening, redness on cheeks and lips like rouge, and sometimes five-palm heat. After the Heart is affected, it transmits to the Lung. When the Lung first receives the pathogen, there is coughing and rebellious qi, worse when lying down, dry nose and mouth, inability to smell, or sensing only putrid odors, occasional nausea, dry skin, intermittent pain, or sensation of insects crawling, fine dry scales like bran. After the Lung is affected, it transmits to the Liver. When the Liver first receives the pathogen, eyes are blurry, face lacks color, frequent frowning, blurred distance vision, dry and gritty eyes, redness and pain, or yellow sclera, desire to close eyes, insomnia. After the Liver is affected, it transmits to the Spleen. When the Spleen first receives the pathogen, distension in the hypochondrium, indigestion, diarrhea, worms in food/water, abdominal pain and borborygmus, dry scaly lips/mouth, ulcers/swellings, dry bristling hair without luster, rebellious qi, shoulder-shrugging panting, passage of dark red/black fluid. Seeing these signs indicates an incurable condition.
The terms Gu Zheng (Bone Steaming), {missing character, likely 'Lao'}, Fu Lian (Hidden Connection), Shi Zhu, Lao Zhu, Chong Zhu, Du Zhu, Re Zhu (Heat Transmission), Leng Zhu (Cold Transmission), Shi Zhu (Food Transmission), and Gui Zhu are all collectively called Chuan Shi by experts. "Zhu" means to pour/transfer; the disease transfers from above downwards. Its variations include twenty-two, thirty-six, or ninety-nine types. Generally, it causes chills and fever, night sweats, dreams of sexual intercourse with ghosts, seminal emission and turbid urine, dry bristling hair, abdominal masses, small nodules behind the ears connected in series, scattered or clustered, heaviness and silence, coughing with phlegm, hemoptysis resembling Fei Wei (Lung Atrophy) or Fei Yong (Lung Abscess), lower abdominal diarrhea, emaciation and fatigue beyond endurance, accumulating over months and years to death. After death, it transmits to relatives, even wiping out families. Additionally, Fei Shi (Flying Corpse), Dun Shi (Escaping Corpse), Han Shi (Cold Corpse), Sang Shi (Dead Corpse), and Shi Zhu are called Wu Shi (Five Corpses), along with Da Xiao Fu Zhuo (Large and Small Adhesion) syndromes, which involve ghostly pathogens harming people. The manifestations are diverse, changing and shifting, hard to predict. Thus, since ancient times, only one in ten recovers. Claims about Fox Bone, Otter Liver, Human Skull Cap, and Copper Lock Nose are mere theories without efficacy. Only Moxibustion on Gaohuangshu (BL43) and Sihua Acupoints, if done early, offers a fifty-fifty chance; late intervention is useless.
Shang Qing Zi Ting Zhui Lao Fang states: The harm of San Shi (Three Corpses) and Jiu Chong (Nine Worms) must be known in detail by practitioners. Among the Nine Worms, Three do not transmit: {missing character, likely 'Nao'} (Pinworm), Roundworm, and Tapeworm. The other six worms arise from toxicity in organs or transmission via family contact. Early signs include mental confusion and climate sensitivity. Strict abstinence from alcohol and sex, and dietary regulation are essential. Otherwise, five-palm heat, night sweats, and palpitations occur. Within ten days, severe emaciation ensues, with a yellow glossy face. These six worms circulate through four acupoints every ten days, repeating. They thrive in Wood Qi, starting after the Spring Equinox, eating every three days, retreating every five. During feeding, all joints hurt. Retreating, they sleep drunk for five days, calming the disease. Treatment with talismans and herbs should occur during this retreat/drunk phase. Otherwise, worms become resistant. Each worm occupies twelve points; six worms occupy seventy-two points. In a month: first ten days, head up, moving from Heart to Head (4 points); middle ten days, head inward, Heart to Umbilicus (4 points); last ten days, head down, Umbilicus to Feet (4 points). Yang days favor males, Yin days females. They eat organ fat first, appearing white. Damage to organs causes skin contraction and hair loss. Women stop menstruating, blood vessels damaged, failing to nourish organs. After 70 days, flesh/blood eaten, worms turn yellow-red. Muscle damage causes emaciation, poor nutrition absorption, flaccid tendons. After 120 days, flesh/blood gone, worms turn purple. They eat essence, transmitting to Kidneys, turning black. Marrow consumption causes bone痿 (impotence/weakness) bedridden state. Long-term worms grow hair, absorbing Five Elements Qi, becoming airborne birds-like entities after infecting three people. Renal transmission is incurable. After purging white worms, tonify for 30 days; yellow-red, 60 days; purple-black, extreme case, 120 days. Red-headed worms eating flesh are treatable; white-headed eating marrow are difficult, requiring prevention of recurrence. Classics say: Treat within 60 days, 70-80% recover; within 80 days, 30-40% recover. Beyond this, survival is uncertain, only preventing hereditary harm.
